In a rare meteorological occurrence, part of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced an unusually-heavy hailstorm that has left some of the usually extremely-hot country, including a vast stretch of desert in Ras Al Khaimah, blanketed in ice.

Heavy downpour has affected large parts of the Arab country, leading to several touristic tours to be cancelled as a result.

Baffled by the phenomenon, Emiratis took to social media to share photos of sandy deserts covered by a coat of ice.

The National Center of Meteorology (NCM) had predicted unstable weather across the UAE, with chances of rain and thunderstorms between Dec. 15 and 18.

The UAE is one of the hottest countries in the Middle East with temperatures at times reaching 50 degrees celcius on hot summer days.

Baffled by the phenomenon, Emiratis took to social media to share photos of sandy deserts covered by a coat of ice.
