Turkey has condemned Friday's terrorist attack in Iraq which killed at least 13 people, including civilians.

“We are saddened to receive the news that 3 civilians and 10 KRG (Kurdish Regional Government) security forces lost their lives in a terror attack that took place in a village near Iraq’s Makhmour district,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Saturday.

“We strongly condemn this heinous terrorist attack which appears to be claimed by Daesh and extend our condolences to KRG authorities and the Iraqi government as well as the relatives of those who lost their lives in the attack,” it added. “We wish Allah’s mercy upon those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured.”

The ministry said Turkey will continue to stand by Iraq in the fight against terrorism.

Attacks blamed on Daesh/ISIS fighters have escalated in Iraq in recent months, especially in the provinces of Salahuddin, Diyala, and Kirkuk.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all of its territories – about a third of the country's area – invaded by the terror group in 2014.
