Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune decided Thursday to advance the presidential elections to September instead of the originally scheduled date in December.

"It was decided to hold pre-term presidential elections scheduled for Saturday, Sep 7, 2024, with the electoral body being summoned on June 8, 2024,'' the Algerian Presidency said in a statement following a meeting chaired by Tebboune to discuss preparations for the elections.

It did not specify the reasons for advancing the elections.

Tebboune was elected Dec. 12, 2019, for five years, renewable once, according to the Constitution.

By advancing the elections, Tebboune exercises one of his powers granted by Article 91 of the Constitution, which states that "he may decide to hold pre-term presidential elections."
