Biruni University Hospital has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully implementing the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) method for aortic insufficiency, marking the first of its kind in Türkiye and the fifth worldwide.
The story of Servet BİLGİN, residing in Sakarya Adapazarı, underscores the significance of this medical breakthrough. Approximately four years ago, Bilgin fell suddenly ill during a visit to Istanbul, requiring urgent medical intervention. With a tear in the inner aortic artery, swift action was imperative. However, his family was not present, and any delay could have had severe consequences. The courageous decision taken by Prof. Dr. Murat UĞURLUCAN led to a successful operation, bringing Bilgin back to life.
After four years had passed, Servet BİLGİN's heart began to struggle once again, necessitating the replacement of the aortic valve. However, reopening the chest cavity posed risks. Although the TAVI method is rarely employed in such cases, with only four patients worldwide having undergone this procedure, Biruni University Hospital, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Murat Uğurlucan, successfully performed this challenging operation for the first time in Türkiye and the fifth time globally. Prof. Dr. Murat UĞURLUCAN, Head of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine, emphasized the significance of the method, stating, "The TAVI method has been used for aortic stenosis treatment until now. This is the first time we have used it for aortic insufficiency. In TAVI, the aortic valve is replaced by entering through the groin without opening the patient's chest or stopping the heart."
