Director General of the Israeli Defense Ministry Eyal Zamir said Monday that he will resign, a few days after the sacking of former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Zamir met with new Defense Minister Israel Katz and requested to resign, the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
“At the request of the defense minister, it was agreed that at this time the director general will continue in his position,” the ministry added.
The statement did not specify any reason for Zamir's resignation request.
Zamir was appointed by Gallant last year as the Defense Ministry's director general. Ever since, he played a major role in keeping the flow of weapons to Israel amid its ongoing wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
Gallant was sacked by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week.
Israel has continued a devastating offensive on the Gaza Strip since an attack by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, on Oct. 7, 2023. The onslaught has killed over 43,600 victims and rendered the enclave almost uninhabitable.
Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the blockaded enclave.
