President Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday called on New Zealand to restore the death penalty for the gunman who killed 50 people at two Christchurch mosques, warning that Turkey would make the attacker pay for his act if New Zealand did not.

Speaking at a local election rally, Erdoğan said that Turkey will make Australian terrorist Brenton Tarrant pay for what he did "one way or another."

"You despicably killed 50 of our brothers. You will pay for this. If New Zealand doesn't hold you accountable, we know how to make you pay for this one way or another," Erdoğan said.

At least 50 people were killed when a terrorist opened fire on worshippers during Friday prayers last week at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.

About as many were injured, with several still in critical condition.
