Azerbaijan has launched the process of rapidly restoring newly liberated territories following its historic victory in the 44-day Karabakh war,
News Agency reports.

Within the framework of this process, the construction of airports tops Baku’s top priorities.

Construction is already underway on the Fuzuli International Airport, which boasts a 3,000 meter-long runway. The first test flight at the newly restored airport is expected to take place on September 5.

Another airport under construction is located in the region of Zangilan, with a planned runway that will be three kilometers long. The as-of yet-unnamed airport, which is scheduled to be commissioned by 2022, will be able to host all types of aircraft, including heavy cargo planes.

Meanwhile, a third airport is under construction in Lachin. Boasting a central location between various vital regions, the Lachin International Airport, which is currently being built with local expertise, will be state-of-the-art and capable of hosting planes of all sizes.

Relations between the former Soviet republics have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

New clashes erupted on Sept. 27, 2020, and ended with a Russia-brokered cease-fire on Nov. 10, 2020.

Azerbaijan liberated several strategic cities and nearly 300 of its settlements and villages from Armenian occupation during this time.

A joint Turkish-Russian center was established to monitor the truce. Russian peacekeeping troops have also been deployed in the region.
