Macron salutes Türkiye's role in peace efforts, opening trade routes

The French president announced Wednesday an additional €2 billion ($2.15 billion) in military aid for Ukraine.

“I can announce today an additional 2 billion euros of military support from France to Ukraine,” Emmanuel Macron announced at a news conference with his Ukrainian counterpart ahead of Thursday's "coalition of the willing" summit in Paris.

Macron condemned Russian strikes against Ukraine that he said is displaying its intent “to continue the war and its aggression.”

“In Jeddah on March 11, Ukraine clearly expressed to the United States its agreement to a complete and unconditional ceasefire for 30 days. We expect the same commitment from Russia,” he said.

Macron acknowledged a US initiative to bring about a “reduction, then a cessation, of hostilities as soon as possible.”

“Regardless of how negotiations evolve, I want to emphasize strongly that France will continue its commitment. We will support American efforts, coordinate with our European and allied partners, and remain determined in our support,” he added.

He noted that Russia turned the Black Sea into a “battleground” and “weakened” international trade routes.

“On several occasions, we have cleared the paths of peace, the cerebral routes, with our commitment. I would like to salute Türkiye's role in recent years. It has a very special role to play when it comes to the Black Sea, thanks to international treaties,” he added.

Macron reiterated the possibility of deployment of European forces in the Ukrainian peace zone, highlighting that security guarantees do not signal a European deployment on the front line.

He also expressed his alignment with the concept of "peace through strength," regarding sanctions on Russia, where the lifting penalties he crossed out until a solid peace is achieved.

“We are not going to lift sanctions under such circumstances. That would mean surrendering unconditionally. No, the issue of sanctions will come up, but only when a solid and lasting peace is secured,” Macron added.
