India’s prime minister on Saturday called for major reforms to the United Nations and India’s role in the global body’s decision-making.
Addressing the UN General Assembly, held virtually due to coronavirus, Narendra Modi said, “Reform in the responses, in the processes, in the character of the United Nations is the need of the hour. It is a fact that the faith and respect that the United Nations enjoys in India are unparalleled. But it is also true that the people of India have been waiting for a long time for the completion of the reforms of the United Nations.”
He added: “People in India are concerned whether this reform process will ever reach its logical conclusion. For how long will India be kept out of the decision-making structures of the United Nations? A country which is the largest democracy in the world.”
Modi also spoke about India’s contributions over the centuries and during the present pandemic.
Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also called for reforms to make decision-making at the UN Security Council more inclusive, arguing: “The world is greater than five.”
