A Jordanian army officer was killed and three soldiers injured on Sunday on border with neighboring Syria, according to the military.
A military statement said smugglers opened fire on Jordanian border guards, which responded to the fire.
The attackers fled into Syrian territories, while a large cache of drugs was seized, according to the statement.
Jordan has seen hundreds of smuggling attempts in recent years, particularly from Syria and Iraq as a result of deteriorating security conditions in the two neighbors.
