A magnitude 4.0 earthquake jolted Turkey's Aegean region early Wednesday, days after a quake in the same region killed over 100 people and injured more than 1,000 others.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said the latest quake occurred at 05.24 a.m. local time (0224 GMT) at a depth of 8 kilometers (5 miles).

It struck 9.61 kilometers (6 miles) off the coast of Kusadasi on Turkey’s Aegean coast -- the region also jolted by Friday’s magnitude 6.6 quake which rattled Izmir and has so far claimed 113 lives and injured 1,035 people.

With a population of some 4.37 million, Izmir is Turkey’s third-largest city.
