Mauritania’s foreign minister and Turkey’s envoy to the country on Tuesday held talks in the capital Nouakchott on promoting ties between the two countries, Mauritania's official News Agency (AMI) reported.

The talks between Foreign Minister Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed and Turkey’s Mehmet Bilir included the promotion of cooperative ties between the two states and ways to improve them, according to AMI.

Relations between Ankara and Nouakchott have seen steady improvement, especially in the wake of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Mauritania this February.

Erdogan's visit saw the signing of several agreements between the two countries in such fields as minerals, fishing, and tourism, in addition to a memorandum of understanding covering agriculture and investment.

In recent years, African countries have become a key partner of Turkey, in line with its foreign policy of reaching out to the continent.
