An Egyptian author’s new book on the life of Ertugrul Gazi, the father of Ottoman Dynasty founder Osman Gazi, has caused a sensation at this week’s international book fair in Baghdad.
Written in Arabic, Mansur Abdulhakim’s “Ertugrul” covers the life and times of its eponymous protagonist, including his determination to fight the enemies of his people and his legendary bravery in battle.
The book also provides an overview of the history-making dynasty -- and empire -- that he spawned.
For the sake of his Arab readers, the author explains the meaning of Ertugrul’s name, with “Er” meaning “valiant” or “soldier” in Turkish, while “Tugrul” is a particularly dangerous bird of prey.
“A deeply fascinating character, Ertugrul Gazi has captured the imagination of the Arab world,” Abdulhakim says in the book’s introduction.
“Modern readers have much to learn from him and his exploits,” he added.
Along with providing a brief history of the Turkish people in the pre-Islamic era, the book also delves into Ertugrul Gazi’s background, the Kayi tribe from which he hailed, and his people’s arduous journey from Central Asia to Anatolia.
