At least six PKK terrorists were "neutralized" in an operation by the Turkish intelligence in northern Iraq, said a security source on Thursday.

The terrorists were active in Gara and Qandil regions, the source said on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

Turkish authorities use the term "neutralized" to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Four terrorists were neutralized in Gara while the two others were neutralized in Qandil, said the source.

Among those neutralized in Gara was a senior member of the PKK/KCK – Nihat Goren, codenamed Botan, added the source.

Goren was found to have been injured in Turkey's Pence operations, then became active in the Gara region after being treated for injuries.

The PKK terror group often uses bases in northern Iraq just across Turkey's southern border to hide and plot terror attacks in Turkey.

The Pence operations are a series of offensives Turkey has carried out since 2019 against terror groups in northern Iraq, particularly the PKK.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.
