Two Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) terrorists who attempted to infiltrate a military base in the Çukurca county of Turkey’s Hakkari district were neutralized on Thursday.
Seven Turkish soldiers were wounded, one of whom is in critical condition. The injured soldiers are receiving medical treatment at the Hakkari Public Hospital.
“F-16 warplanes were dispatched to the region to provide air support. Two members of separatist terrorist organizations were neutralized in the clash,” the office of the governor said in a statement.
“A large number of rocket launchers and AK-47 Kalashnikov long-barreled weapons were seized. A judicial investigation is underway.”
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States.
The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.
