The Libyan High Council of State (HCS) condemned the Emirati government in a written statement on Sunday for allowing a spokesperson for Libya’s eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, Ahmed Al-Mismari, to hold a press conference in Abu Dhabi, saying the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is fueling violence and war in the country.
"The press conference of Haftar's spokesman in Abu Dhabi is additional evidence of the UAE's involvement in fueling violence and war in Libya and its assistance to Haftar's forces to carry out a coup against legitimacy," it said.
The HCS also urged the United Nations to take action against violations in the country, saying: "The UN support mission in Libya should document these violations and condemn them. The Government of National Accord should take necessary measures to respond to these violations by the UAE."
Earlier on Saturday, Haftar's spokesman Ahmed Al-Mismari held a press conference in the Emirati capital Abu Dhabi, The Libya Observer reported.
Dressed in a military uniform, he spoke about dispatching troops in Tarhouna against the Libyan Army as heavy clashes continue in the city.
Al-Mismari also reiterated that Haftar’s forces are not open to any political dialogue until the capital Tripoli is captured.
Early April, forces loyal to Haftar launched a campaign to capture Tripoli from forces aligned with the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).
Clashes between the two sides have since then left more than 1,000 people dead and about 5,500 wounded, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Libya has remained beset by turmoil since 2011, when long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted and killed in a bloody NATO-backed uprising after four decades in power.
