Thousands of demonstrators gathered in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Thursday rejected the statement made by the country's army, calling for a civilian transitional body.

"We don't replace one military coup with another," were heard chanting in the capital as the army made its long awaited statement, as the Sudan professionals union also sided with people, noting that the terms failed to meet protesters’ demands.

Sudan's defense minister said on Thursday that President Omar al-Bashir had been detained "in a safe place" and that a military council would run the country for a two-year transitional period.

In a statement broadcast on state TV Defense Minister Awad Mohamed Ahmed Ibn Auf said there would be elections at the end of the transitional period.
