The swearing-in ceremony of Turkey's 12th President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was marred by a provocation of the opposition Republican People's Party, or CHP.

CHP deputies objected on procedural grounds before the General Assembly saw the historical inauguration.

Engin Altay Cemil, the deputy chair of CHP's parliamentary group, requested to make a speech but his appeal was refused by Cemil Çicek, the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament. Cemil threw the book of regulations at the Speaker in a response to his refusal for his request.

CHP deputies left the General Assembly along with Cemil while the Speaker was opening the session before President Erdogan's swearing-in began.

The President received standing ovation when he arrived in the General Assembly. The deputies of the ruling Justice and Development, which he led for 12 years as the party's first chair, applauded their former leaders warmly.

Some of the deputies from the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, were seen applauding the country's first democratically-elected President, along with the deputies from pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP.

After the inauguration in the General Assembly, deputies performed the national anthem.

President Erdogan left for the Mausoleum of the founder of modern Turkey, Ataturk, following the ceremony before he heads for the Çankaya.
