Meet Leo: Bursa’s furry rafting mascot

Meet Leo, a German Shephered that practices rafting alongside his owner Hasan Kilik, who teaches in the Kocasu Creek’s parkour in Türkiye’s western Bursa province. Leo has become the mascot of the rafters who come to visit Kocasu Creek which was modeled by the Turkish Rafting Federation to practice rafting.

Turkish adventurer lives on mountain for 7 years without technology in Bursa

35-year-old Ilhan Budak, who has been living on the mountainside of Uludag for 7 years with no access to technology, exercises with DIY weights made of recycled yoghurt containers outside his small shelter in Bursa, Turkey. Budak made the decision to move far away from the city center and immerse himself in nature sans technological devices due to his great interest in sports, and he boasts myriad medals which he won after participating in nationwide marathons. Budak also makes his own vinegar from organic fruits and has been earning his living by working in rural areas.

Baby brown bears, who got separated from their mother and unable to live in nature, became the mascot of the rehabilitation center where they are taken under protection in the Karacabey district of Bursa. The general caring of the baby bears, which are 8 months old on average, is carried out by specialist veterinarians at the center in the area created especially for them. Bears are being fed pears, carrots, apples, fresh fruit and bread as well as special high-protein foods.

1,200 police launch operation in Bursa to ensure order

Fifty suspects were detained in an operation in Bursa province in which police officers searched for smuggled items and recovered weapons caches, contraband cigarettes and drugs.

The city-wide operation deployed 1,200 police officers. A total of 5,525 people were subjected to a Police Information Check (GBT). Of this number, 50 were detained by the police for several crimes.

Police also questioned 521 drivers for alleged traffic violations. Twenty-three of 521 drivers were fined more than 8,000 liras in total. Also, 13 drivers were banned from driving for several reasons.

Police seized several precision scales, 3 drug-use devices, 94 grams of cannabis, a quantity of methamphetamine, 11 guns, a number of cartridges belonged to these guns and three blades during the search of the business locations.

Turkey: Blast in factory kills one

At least one person has been killed and another wounded in a blast at a nitrogen factory near the western Turkish province of Bursa, according to rescue officials.

The explosion occurred in a factory in the town of Gemlik early Sunday. The reason of the explosion remains unknown.

Rescue workers from AKUT Search and Rescue Association and Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said they found the body of one of the workers, Ugur Cavdar, under the wreckage.

The injured worker Mustafa Karakol was taken to the Gemlik Muammer Agim State Hospital. He indicated to officials that only two people were in the factory when the explosion occurred.

Social Security office raided over alleged wiretapping

Anti-smuggling and Organized Crime forces in Bursa on Wednesday swooped on the Provincial Directorate of the Social Security Institution, or SGK, acting on a tip-off that some information, recorded in the switchboard, had been transferred somewhere else after being wiretapped illegally.

Two computers, some official documents and all call recordings were confiscated during the operation. Police have taken the images of the computers, which were linked to the switchboard, to search for anything that could uphold the claims. The office's employees have not been taken under police custody.

“This is actually a retroactive claim. The police search will clarify if any information has been sent somewhere else,” said Ercan Karaca, the Provincial Head of SGK, speaking to the reporters after the operation.

The government authority in the province of Bursa will file a criminal complaint against those who made the tip-off, if the investigation turns out to be a hoax.
