Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned on Tuesday that hunger is increasingly being weaponized in conflicts, citing more than 20,000 attacks on food infrastructure over eight years and cautioning that disruptions to Middle East trade routes could spark a global food crisis within months.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned on Tuesday that hunger is increasingly being deployed as a "cheap weapon" in armed conflicts, condemning attacks on food infrastructure and cautioning that disruptions to Middle East trade routes risk triggering a global food crisis within months.

Weaponization of hunger

Speaking at the Food Security and Nutrition Under Pressure event during Rome Nutrition Week, Sanchez said more than 20,000 attacks against markets, farmland and distribution networks have been documented over the past eight years. He specifically referenced Gaza, where "some seek to win a war by starving an entire people into submission," adding that such tactics represent "a blatant violation of international humanitarian law."

The Spanish leader also criticized Israel's detention of humanitarian flotilla members last week, stating they "humiliated, abandoned and mistreated" activists attempting to deliver aid. "Hunger today is exactly that: a weapon," Sanchez said, describing it as "a very cheap weapon" that disproportionately impacts civilian populations.

Global trade disruptions

Sanchez warned that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — through which nearly half of maritime fertilizer trade passes — has driven nitrogen-based fertilizer prices up by 50 percent. Europeans are already feeling the impact "in our pockets" through rising food costs, he noted, while other regions face "even more dramatic" consequences as famine risks mount.

"Those who set the world on fire are never the ones who end up going hungry," Sanchez said, cautioning that decisions made today will determine whether the world faces a new food crisis within six to 12 months. Spain increased development aid by 13 percent in 2025 despite broader global declines, he added, pledging continued support for multilateral efforts to combat hunger.

FAO warns of deeper crisis

Food and Agriculture Organization Director-General Qu Dongyu echoed these concerns, stating that disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict are placing growing pressure on global agrifood systems. "The decisions we make now will determine whether this remains a manageable shock, or evolves into a deeper global food security crisis in 2026 and 2027," Qu said, urging early action before humanitarian costs rise.

He noted that rising energy and fertilizer prices are increasing production costs worldwide, while vulnerable countries already struggling with debt, climate shocks and conflict face worsening pressure. "Food crises do not begin when shelves are empty," Qu said. "They begin when farmers cannot plant, when fertilizers become unaffordable, when transport systems break down and when vulnerable households lose their purchasing power."

French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu told the National Assembly on Tuesday that stronger punitive measures are essential within the European Union framework, citing last week's interception of a humanitarian convoy that departed from Türkiye as evidence that current restrictions have failed to deter violations of international law.

French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu demanded stronger European Union sanctions against Israel on Tuesday, telling the National Assembly that Paris must respond forcefully within the bloc's legal framework following the Israeli military's attack on a Gaza-bound humanitarian convoy in international waters.

Sanctions call

Lecornu said it is "essential to go further with sanctions in the framework of the European Union," insisting that France must utilize "the tools of the rule of law and in full respect of international law." He noted that the failure of certain states to respect international norms does not excuse French inaction, according to parliamentary transcripts.

Flotilla interception

The Israeli army intercepted the Global Sumud flotilla last Monday in international waters as the convoy attempted to breach the blockade of Gaza, which has remained in place since 2007. Live broadcasts showed naval forces boarding multiple vessels that had departed from the Turkish Mediterranean district of Marmaris four days earlier carrying 426 participants — including 96 Turkish activists and citizens from 39 other nations such as Germany, the US, and the UK.

Pattern of interceptions

The sanctions demand follows the circulation of footage showing Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir — a key coalition partner to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — waving an Israeli flag and taunting detained activists who were shown kneeling in tightly packed formations with their hands tied behind their backs. The April 29 incident off Crete saw forces detain 177 activists approximately 600 nautical miles from Gaza, according to organizers who reported mistreatment during the operation well outside Greek territorial waters.

Russia's UN ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Washington on Tuesday of violating its host country obligations by denying a visa to Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov for a high-level Security Council meeting, calling the move an "egregious" affront to both the Chinese presidency and the UN Charter debate.

Visa refusal violates host obligations

Russia's ambassador to the United Nations on Tuesday accused the United States of violating its international obligations as host country by denying a visa to a senior Russian diplomat scheduled to attend a high-level Security Council meeting, condemning the move as an act of "egregious disrespect." Addressing a council debate in New York on upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, Vassily Nebenzia stated that Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Alimov had originally been selected to lead the Russian delegation for the session.

"However, despite all of our attempts to persuade the US side to issue a visa to him, that visa was ultimately not granted," Nebenzia said. He argued that the refusal constitutes a clear breach of the UN Headquarters Agreement — which mandates that Washington provide access to the headquarters for officials from all member states without exception. The ambassador characterized the denial not merely as a procedural failure but as a deliberate snub to the Chinese presidency of the Security Council and the thematic significance of the debate on international system strengthening.

Western 'rules-based order' challenged

Nebenzia further claimed that countries "spearheaded by the West are proposing some kind of a (new) rules-based order," rather than adhering strictly to the UN Charter framework. The visa dispute underscores ongoing diplomatic friction between Moscow and Washington regarding access to international forums and competing visions of multilateral legitimacy. The Security Council session convened Tuesday to address mechanisms for strengthening the UN-centered international system amid rising great-power tensions.

Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov said on Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to Kazakhstan on Thursday for talks with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev aimed at expanding strategic cooperation and advancing energy projects, including Astana's first nuclear power plant.

Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay his second state visit to Kazakhstan in two years on Thursday for talks with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said on Tuesday, noting that the unusually frequent visit reflects the exceptionally high level of bilateral relations.

Strategic cooperation

The visit, which includes participation in Eurasian Economic Union events, comes despite diplomatic protocol limiting state visits to one per presidential term — a restriction Moscow and Astana agreed to waive to highlight their partnership, Ushakov stated. Trade turnover between the neighbors reached a record $29 billion in 2025, with Russia accounting for approximately 19% of Kazakhstan's foreign commerce, he added.

Energy and infrastructure

Energy cooperation will dominate the agenda during the Putin-Tokayev discussions, with particular focus on expanding Russian oil transit routes through Kazakhstan and advancing infrastructure development. The leaders are expected to finalize an agreement for constructing Kazakhstan's first nuclear power plant using Russian designs and financing, alongside 15 other bilateral documents including a joint declaration outlining seven principles of friendship, according to the Kremlin official.

Eurasian Economic Forum

More than 30 Russian officials and executives will join a 400-strong delegation attending the visit and related EAEU activities, Ushakov noted. On Thursday, Putin is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the 5th Eurasian Economic Forum focusing on digital transformation and artificial intelligence, while Friday's Supreme Eurasian Economic Council meeting will address economic security risks, including Armenia's potential pivot toward the European Union. During the visit, the leaders will also witness the symbolic launch of a Sirius educational center construction project in Astana and the release of four Amur tigers into the Ile-Balkhash nature reserve.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told the Security Council on Tuesday that the UN Charter is under "profound strain" amid the highest number of global conflicts since 1945, warning that violations of international law are spreading unchecked while geopolitical divisions deepen.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Tuesday that the United Nations Charter is under "profound strain" as conflicts multiply worldwide and geopolitical divisions erode the foundations of international law, addressing the Security Council's high-level open debate in Hamilton, Canada.

Seven Threats to Global Order

Guterres described the charter as "a survival guide for humanity" created to ensure "that the force of law must prevail over the law of force." He identified seven major threats now endangering the international system, warning that "we now face the highest number of conflicts since the founding of the United Nations."

"There is growing external interference" in these conflicts, he said, pointing to escalating violence across the Middle East, Sudan and Ukraine. He noted that weapons provisions — including drones — now frequently target civilians and civilian objects, expanding the scope of external involvement in regional wars.

Regional Flashpoints

The secretary-general expressed particular concern regarding Russia's announcement of attacks on Ukrainian defense facilities following reports of a Ukrainian drone strike in Starobelsk. "Now more than ever, it is imperative to avoid any escalation," he said, warning that further conflict risks making "the search for peace even more distant" in a war that has already devastated civilian populations.

He also highlighted instability across the Middle East, noting that Israel has announced expanded operations in Lebanon while ceasefire violations persist in Gaza. Uncertainty surrounds negotiations between Washington and Tehran, he added, compounding risks of wider regional confrontation.

Erosion of International Norms

Guterres warned of "a dangerous erosion of respect for international law," stating that core principles — sovereign equality, territorial integrity and the prohibition of force — "are being challenged or ignored." He observed that "violations go unanswered" while impunity spreads across multiple theaters of conflict.

The UN chief also pointed to an "accelerating and destabilizing arms race" as military spending reaches record levels while humanitarian and development funding declines. He cautioned that new technologies including artificial intelligence and autonomous weapons are advancing faster than international capacity to govern them.

Climate and Governance Challenges

Climate change is acting as "a driver of instability, a multiplier of threats, and an increasing source of tension within and between nations," Guterres said. He added that human rights are under "full-scale attack" and developing nations face mounting debt burdens alongside limited access to financing.

Urging reforms to global institutions, Guterres stressed they "must reflect today's realities, not those of 1945." He acknowledged that "no reform, institutional or structural, can substitute for political will," calling on all member states to refrain from threatening or using force against any state's territorial integrity or political independence.

France reported seven heat-related deaths on Tuesday as Western Europe experienced scorching temperatures. “Unfortunately, what I can say today is that there would be seven deaths directly or indirectly linked to the heat,” government spokesperson Maud Bregeon told TF1. Five of the deaths were drownings as people sought to cool off in water bodies, while others were linked to extreme heat during sporting competitions. French broadcaster BFM TV reported an eighth death involving a person at a body of water in Bas-Rhin, but it was not included in the official toll. Meteo-France issued orange heatwave alerts for several departments, with afternoon temperatures expected to range between 33°C and 36°C—described as “remarkable for late May.”

Ozone pollution and UK record

The heatwave is expected to bring elevated ozone pollution levels in the Paris region and Rhone Valley, which could cause respiratory or cardiovascular discomfort. The UK recorded its highest May temperature on Monday, as well as its highest daily minimum temperature for the month overnight, according to the Met Office. Spain’s AEMET issued yellow alerts for several regions as temperatures hover around 34-38°C, while Portugal’s IPMA projected temperatures nearing 40°C.

The Netherlands is moving ahead with plans to establish migrant “return hubs” outside the European Union, with initial steps expected within months. A legal review found no obstacles, and the plan is being discussed with Greece, Germany, Austria, and Denmark.

The Netherlands is advancing plans to create migrant “return hubs” outside the European Union, with initial steps expected within months, Politico reported Monday, citing Migration Minister Bart van den Brink. “Across Europe, people are asking for credible and workable solutions to regain control over migration,” van den Brink, who is also deputy prime minister, told Politico. He added that such solutions are “taking shape” and considered legally viable. The proposed system would see asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected in the EU transferred to centers located outside the bloc, as part of efforts to reduce irregular migration and improve return procedures.

Legal and political context

According to a letter sent by the Dutch government to parliament, The Hague is exploring processing asylum applications outside EU territory in cooperation with other member states. The plan is being discussed with several European partners, including Greece, Germany, Austria, and Denmark—all of which have supported stricter migration measures. A legal review commissioned by the Dutch government concluded that there are no legal obstacles to the plan. The first return hub is expected to be established outside the bloc, though the location has not yet been announced, with negotiations ongoing with potential host countries.

AKEL and the Direct Democracy Cyprus Party made gains in Sunday's parliamentary polls on an anti-Israel platform, while the far-right ELAM doubled its seats to eight, leaving President Nikos Christodoulides facing a reshaped landscape after his allies failed to clear the electoral threshold.

The Greek Cypriot Administration's parliamentary elections on Sunday delivered gains to parties critical of Israel and the far-right National Popular Front (ELAM), signaling a shift in the political landscape of the divided island.

Anti-Israel sentiment drives left-wing gains

The Progressive Party of Working People (AKEL) reversed its electoral decline dating back to 2011, increasing its vote share to 23.9 percent from 22.3 percent in the previous contest while retaining its 15 seats in the 56-member legislature. The left-wing party has drawn attention for criticizing the transformation of the Greek Cypriot Administration into Israel's 'backyard,' a stance that resonated with voters amid growing tensions over Israeli property purchases in the south.

Social media personality Fidias Panayiotou's Direct Democracy Cyprus Party also entered parliament with four seats after securing 5.4 percent of the vote. Panayiotou has built a following through strong criticism of Israeli investors acquiring property in the Greek Cypriot Administration, with his anti-Israel platform attracting particular support among younger voters.

Far-right doubles representation

The far-right National Popular Front (ELAM) emerged as another major winner, doubling its parliamentary presence from four to eight seats after capturing 10.9 percent of the vote. The party advocates for the direct union of Cyprus with Greece and maintains a hardline stance against federal settlement talks regarding the island's division, with observers noting its growing influence could reshape the 2028 presidential race.

Although the center-right Democratic Rally Party (DISY) remained the largest force with 27.1 percent of the vote, ELAM's surge has sparked debate across both the Greek Cypriot Administration and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) regarding a potential fundamental realignment within the Greek Cypriot right. The results suggest a fragmentation of the traditional right-wing bloc that has dominated politics since the 2004 Annan Plan referendum.

President's allies fail to cross threshold

President Nikos Christodoulides expressed disappointment after two center-right parties that support his administration narrowly failed to enter parliament, according to the Cyprus Times. The Democratic Alignment (DIPA) and the Movement for Social Democracy (EDEK) both fell short of the electoral threshold by only a few hundred votes, depriving the president of valuable legislative allies in the 56-seat House of Representatives.

The center-right Democratic Rally Party (DISY) secured 27.1 percent of the vote to remain the largest parliamentary force, though the overall shift toward anti-Israel and nationalist platforms has altered the balance of power. The new legislature will hold its first session later this month with AKEL holding 15 seats, ELAM holding eight, and Panayiotou's party holding four.

Diplomatic sources said Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan received Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov in Ankara on Sunday to discuss potential pathways toward a negotiated settlement of the ongoing war, though authorities declined to provide immediate details regarding the specific agenda or any concrete outcomes achieved during the closed-door session.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan received Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov in Ankara on Sunday for discussions on potential pathways to resolve the ongoing conflict, diplomatic sources said. The meeting took place in the Turkish capital as part of continuing diplomatic efforts to address the war between Moscow and Kyiv — though no official statement was issued regarding specific outcomes or agreements reached during the session.

Umerov serves as the head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office and leads Kyiv’s delegation in peace negotiations with Russia, engaging in multiple rounds of talks aimed at securing a ceasefire and establishing frameworks for lasting security guarantees. His visit to Türkiye comes amid sustained international pressure for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, which has persisted for over two years with no comprehensive peace settlement achieved.

Mediation Role

Ankara has maintained an active mediation role throughout the crisis, leveraging its unique position as a NATO member with established diplomatic channels to both Ukraine and Russia to facilitate dialogue between the warring parties. Turkish officials have repeatedly emphasized the necessity of a negotiated settlement based on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while continuing to host technical talks and humanitarian coordination meetings when possible.

The Sunday meeting follows recent high-level contacts between Turkish and Ukrainian officials, though authorities declined to provide additional details about the specific agenda or duration of discussions between Fidan and Umerov. Diplomatic observers note that Türkiye remains committed to supporting peace initiatives even as battlefield conditions continue to shift across eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person was killed and 24 others injured in a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone strike on the Ukrainian capital, as authorities confirmed residential buildings and a student dormitory were damaged in the overnight assault that followed warnings of imminent Russian retaliation.

Overnight assault on capital

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Sunday reported that a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone attack on the Ukrainian capital had killed at least one person and injured 24 others, striking residential buildings, a student dormitory and commercial facilities in the latest escalation of the conflict. The strikes occurred overnight after Ukrainian and US intelligence officials warned that Moscow could be preparing missile attacks following a deadly Ukrainian strike that prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to order retaliation, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Prior warnings of missile strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Saturday that intelligence from Ukrainian, US and European sources indicated Russia could be preparing to use Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missiles, urging international pressure on Moscow before further escalation occurs. Ukraine’s Air Force warned late Saturday that the missile system may have been launched as part of the assault on the capital.

Tymur Tkachenko, Kyiv’s military administrator, said the city was facing a “massive ballistic attack” and urged residents to remain in shelters during the bombardment.

Civilian impact and casualties

Klitschko wrote on Telegram that the number of injured had risen to 24, including a 15-year-old boy, with three people in serious condition. At least 13 people have been taken to hospital for treatment following the strikes that damaged a car service center and a shopping mall alongside residential structures.

Russian authorities have yet to comment on the attack or the casualty figures reported by Ukrainian officials, as tensions continue to mount between the two sides amid ongoing military operations.

The European Union has demanded that all parties fully respect the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, warning that attacks on medical personnel and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law amid escalating violence in southern Lebanon.

EU calls for truce compliance

The European Union on Saturday demanded strict adherence to the temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, condemning recent deadly strikes on paramedics and hospitals in southern Lebanon as violations of international humanitarian law. EU Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni said in a written statement that Brussels continues to support bilateral dialogue between the parties and encourages negotiations toward lasting stability in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. El Anouni noted that the bloc has continuously called upon Israel to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that all parties must fully comply with legal obligations to protect civilians, civilian infrastructure, UN peacekeepers, and humanitarian personnel throughout the disputed border region.

Paramedics targeted in Tyre district

The EU statement follows a surge in Israeli airstrikes across southern Lebanon that have killed civilians and emergency workers despite the US-mediated ceasefire that formally took effect on April 17 and was subsequently extended through early July. Lebanese authorities said at least 15 people died in Friday's attacks alone, including six paramedics performing rescue operations in the Tyre district. Two medics were among 10 people killed in Deir Qanoun al-Nahr while carrying out what authorities described as their humanitarian duty, while four others died when an Israeli warplane struck an Islamic Health Authority position in Hanouiyeh, also within the Tyre district. A separate drone strike in Nabatieh killed one person and wounded two others, while three more sustained injuries in the Hafour area between Siddiqine and Qana.

Health facilities under attack

The violence extended into Saturday with fresh strikes killing at least five people and inflicting major structural damage on Hiram Hospital in the southern port city of Tyre, rendering parts of the facility inoperable according to Lebanese media reports. The National News Agency said raids destroyed a residential house and killed four other people in the Tyre district, while a drone strike in Nabatieh killed one person and wounded two others. The attacks came one day after an Israeli strike caused severe damage to a hospital in Tebnine, killing two people and injuring three others and further straining the healthcare system's ability to treat casualties amid the ongoing hostilities.

Lebanese Health Ministry figures indicate at least 16 hospitals have sustained damage in Israeli attacks since March 2, with 116 medical personnel killed and 263 wounded during the same period. Lebanese officials say more than 3,089 people have been killed, 9,397 injured, and over 1.6 million displaced since fighting intensified in March amid wider regional hostilities involving Israel, Iran, and Hezbollah.

Türkiye has strongly condemned Greece’s release of Alexandros Giotopoulos, the convicted ringleader of the November 17 terror group, calling it an “unacceptable display of tolerance” and a grave disrespect to slain Turkish diplomats. Giotopoulos was serving 17 life terms for attacks including the murders of three Turkish diplomats.

Ankara has delivered a sharp rebuke to Athens following the conditional release of Alexandros Giotopoulos, the convicted mastermind behind the November 17 terror organisation. The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the May 21 release, describing the 82‑year‑old as the instigator of multiple fatal attacks targeting Turkish diplomats in Greece.

Decades of bloodshed

The ministry noted that Giotopoulos was serving 17 life sentences plus an additional 25 years for orchestrating the 1991 killing of press attaché Çetin Görgü, the attempted assassination of embassy counsellor Deniz Bölükbaşı the same year, and the 1994 murder of counsellor Haluk Sipahioğlu. “The move represents an unacceptable display of tolerance toward this vile terrorist and amounts to a grave disrespect to the memory of our martyred diplomats and their families,” the statement read.

Call for accountability

A Greek judicial panel approved Giotopoulos’s conditional release citing his advanced age. Türkiye urged Greek authorities to refrain from actions that could weaken counter‑terrorism efforts and to uphold their responsibilities regarding the punishment of convicted terrorists. The incident has further strained already tense Turkish‑Greek relations, which have also been roiled by disputes over the Aegean, Eastern Mediterranean, and the term “Turkish Straits” at the UN.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday during the NATO Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Helsingborg, Sweden. The Turkish Foreign Ministry confirmed the meeting in a statement shared on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, noting that the two top diplomats held talks on the sidelines of the alliance gathering.

Preparations for Ankara summit

The meeting comes as NATO allies prepare for the July leaders’ summit in Ankara, where transatlantic burden‑sharing, defence spending, and the alliance’s response to the Iran war are expected to dominate the agenda. Fidan and Rubio last spoke by phone in April to discuss the Gaza ceasefire and humanitarian aid. Turkey and the US have also been coordinating on the Black Sea grain corridor, Syria, and counter‑terrorism.

No further details

While the Turkish Foreign Ministry did not disclose the specific topics discussed, such bilateral meetings typically cover regional crises, bilateral defence cooperation, and preparations for the upcoming summit. The Helsingborg gathering is the final foreign ministers’ meeting before the Ankara summit, making it a key moment to align positions among allies. Türkiye has increasingly positioned itself as an indispensable NATO member bridging Europe, the Black Sea, and the Middle East.

The European Union has expanded its sanctions framework against Iran to include individuals and entities accused of threatening freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Measures include travel bans and asset freezes, following an April 21 political agreement among EU foreign ministers.

The Council of the EU announced Friday that it has broadened the bloc’s sanctions regime targeting Iran to cover actors involved in actions that undermine lawful maritime passage, with a particular focus on the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Legal basis and restrictions

In a formal statement, the council said the amended legal framework allows the EU to impose restrictive measures on those linked to Iranian actions “impeding lawful transit passage and freedom of navigation.” The decision follows a political agreement reached by EU foreign ministers during the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on April 21. Brussels asserts that Iran’s conduct toward vessels transiting the strait is “contrary to international law” and infringes on established rights of transit and innocent passage through international straits.

Travel bans and asset freezes

Under the expanded framework, the EU can now impose travel bans and asset freezes on designated individuals and entities. Sanctioned persons will be prohibited from entering or transiting through EU member state territories. Additionally, European citizens and companies are barred from making funds or economic resources available to those listed.

Escalating maritime concerns

The original sanctions framework was established in July 2023 in response to Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine. It was later expanded in May 2024 to address Iranian backing for armed groups in the Middle East and the Red Sea region, as well as Tehran’s drone and missile attacks on Israel in April 2024. The latest move comes amid rising international alarm over maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global oil shipments. In March, the European Council called for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and condemned “any acts that threaten navigation or prevent vessels from entering and exiting the Strait of Hormuz.”

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias made striking remarks about Türkiye’s defense industry achievements during a conference titled “Greece After World War I,” responding to a journalist’s question about Türkiye’s growing cooperation with major European defense firms.

Türkiye recognized new technologies early

Dendias said: “We must admit that Türkiye has succeeded in developing significant production capacity in recent years, and this deserves every praise. It recognized new technologies early. At a time when many countries did not even know what unmanned aerial vehicles meant, Türkiye reached a certain level of UAV production.” He added that Türkiye has built a substantial export capacity, particularly selling to third-world countries and many nations in Africa, and through this effort has also generated diplomatic influence.

‘We must accept this as a fact’

The Greek minister emphasized that these achievements are undeniable. “All of this is absolutely true, and we must accept it. This is something our neighboring country has accomplished,” Dendias stated, while also stressing the close relations between Greece and European nations. His remarks mark a rare acknowledgment from a senior Greek official of Türkiye’s growing defense capabilities, particularly in the field of unmanned systems. Türkiye continues to expand its defense exports and technological cooperation with allies worldwide, with Turkish drones playing a decisive role in conflicts from the Caucasus to Eastern Europe.

Jean-Noel Barrot told reporters ahead of the NATO summit in Sweden that Washington's reassessment of its commitment to European allies presents an opportunity to deepen Europe's role within the alliance, while warning that calls for French withdrawal from NATO are "unreasonable and entirely irresponsible."

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on Friday described Washington's reassessment of its engagement with European allies as an opportunity to strengthen Europe's role within NATO, telling reporters in Sweden that the shift would allow the alliance to become "more European." Speaking ahead of the alliance's ministerial meeting, Barrot said the United States' reassessment of its continental commitment is not a recent development, adding that he views the moment as a chance to develop European capabilities and vision within the bloc.

Withdrawal calls rejected

Barrot dismissed calls by certain French political figures for Paris to withdraw from NATO, labeling such demands "unreasonable and entirely irresponsible." He stressed that solidarity mechanisms must bind allies to their closest partners and neighbors, particularly as threats grow near the Baltic states amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Baltic countries would view any French withdrawal as a betrayal, Barrot noted, pointing to the heightened security concerns in the region due to Moscow's military actions.

Alliance's deterrence record

The foreign minister emphasized that distancing from an organization that has enabled members to deter and ward off every form of threat since 1949 would constitute a strategic mistake. NATO was founded in Washington in 1949 to provide collective security against Soviet expansion, with France remaining a core member despite periodic tensions over the alliance's integrated command structure.

The mayor’s office confirmed to Le Nouvel Obs that the initiative will be presented to the Paris Council in June.

Symbolic gesture and message

In a statement, the mayor’s office said: “Paris has always associated its name with the freedom of peoples and human dignity. It chooses civilians over violence, law over arbitrariness, life over destruction.” The office also stressed the importance of honouring Palestinian journalists, adding: “Honouring them means honouring the fundamental right of societies to know the truth.”

The proposal comes amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, where thousands of Palestinian civilians have been killed and critical infrastructure destroyed. While the honorary citizenship is largely symbolic, it reflects growing municipal-level solidarity with Palestinians across European cities.

The United Kingdom has summoned Israel’s top diplomat in London to register strong concern over the treatment of activists from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla. The Foreign Office said it called in the Israeli chargé d’affaires following an “inflammatory video posted by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.”

Condemnation and demand for answers

The Foreign Office stated that the summoning “reflects the UK’s strong condemnation of his conduct in taunting those involved in the Global Sumud Flotilla. This behaviour violates the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people.” London also expressed deep concern over the detention conditions shown in the video and demanded an explanation from Israeli authorities. The UK stressed that Israel must protect the rights of all those involved and ensure significantly more humanitarian aid can enter Gaza through land routes.

Wider context

Ben-Gvir posted a minute-long video showing himself taunting pro-Palestinian activists who had been zip-tied and forced to kneel after Israeli forces detained them in international waters. The incident has sparked international outrage, with ten countries summoning Israeli envoys. The flotilla, carrying 428 people from 44 countries to break Israel’s 2007 blockade on Gaza.
Friedrich Merz has proposed a new “associated member” status for Ukraine within the EU, including participation in European Council meetings, Commission roles without voting rights, and a mutual defence guarantee. He acknowledged that full accession remains unrealistic in the short term.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is pushing for Ukraine to receive a novel “associated member” status within the European Union, responding to Kyiv’s demand for rapid accession amid the war with Russia. In a letter to EU leaders obtained by dpa, Merz proposed immediately integrating Ukraine more closely into EU institutions without granting full membership or voting rights initially.

Political signal and security guarantee

Merz argued that the special status would send “a strong political signal that Ukraine and its citizens so urgently need in their ongoing struggle against Russian aggression.” The proposal includes Ukraine aligning its foreign and security policy with the EU, with member states making a political commitment to apply the mutual assistance clause (Article 42(7)) to Ukraine — effectively extending a substantial security guarantee. Merz described the idea as a political solution to bring Ukraine “significantly closer to the European Union and its core institutions” without requiring ratification of an accession treaty under Article 49.

Institutional participation and safeguards

Under Merz’s vision, Ukraine could participate in European Council and Council of the EU meetings (without voting rights), hold associate memberships in the European Commission without portfolio, and have associate judges at the European Court of Justice as “Assistant Rapporteurs.” Ukraine would not initially contribute to or benefit from the EU budget, but direct‑management programmes could be opened gradually. Merz suggested a fallback mechanism or sunset clause in case of democratic backsliding.

Official figures released on Thursday showed Britain's net migration fell to 171,000 in 2025, marking the lowest level since 2012 when excluding the COVID-19 period, as work-related arrivals from non-EU countries dropped sharply while 800,000 people immigrated and over 640,000 left the country.

Office for National Statistics data released Thursday showed Britain's net migration fell to 171,000 in 2025, marking the lowest level since 2012 when excluding the pandemic period, as the figure continued a sharp decline from a peak of 944,000 recorded in the year to March 2023. The provisional data indicated that 800,000 people immigrated to the UK last year while more than 640,000 left, representing a 20% decrease in arrivals and a 6% drop in departures compared to the previous year.

Work arrivals plummet

A 47% decrease in non-EU citizens arriving for work-related reasons served as the primary driver behind the reduction, the ONS noted in its statistical release. The Home Office simultaneously published figures indicating that asylum claims fell by 12% during the year to March, while the number of asylum seekers accommodated in hotels declined by one-third over the same period.

Channel crossings continue

Despite the overall reduction in legal migration, irregular crossings of the English Channel continued to climb, with small boat arrivals rising 3% in the year to March to reach 39,271 people, according to separate Home Office data. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on X that the government was "restoring order and control to our borders," citing the 82% reduction in net migration from the Conservative-era peak. Earlier this month, the Home Office confirmed that more than 200,000 migrants have crossed the English Channel in small boats since records began in 2018.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska praised Türkiye’s growing defense investments during a panel in Brussels on Wednesday, emphasizing that stronger military deterrence and sustained spending increases are essential to safeguard the alliance’s future against threats ranging from the Arctic to the Mediterranean.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska on Wednesday emphasized the need for robust military deterrence to secure the alliance’s future while praising Türkiye’s defense investments during a high-level panel discussion in Brussels organized by Ankara’s Directorate of Communications.

Long-term deterrence

Shekerinska told attendees that maintaining security across the alliance requires sustained commitments rather than temporary measures. "In order to continue protecting our alliance, we need strong military deterrence, we need a strong defense posture," she said. She stressed that elevated defense spending must continue "not just for now, but for years to come," adding that enhanced military capabilities remain the most effective means of preventing conflict.

Ankara’s alliance role

The NATO official highlighted Türkiye’s planned spending increases as impressive demonstrations of its commitment to both the alliance and broader regional security. She noted that Ankara has long exceeded NATO’s 2% GDP defense benchmark — even during periods when numerous allies fell short — and maintains the organization’s second-largest army. "We always stress that Türkiye has been an invaluable ally for nearly 75 years," Shekerinska said, citing contributions across maritime, land, and air domains while adding that Ankara remains committed to further increases aligned with collective spending goals.

Evolving security challenges

Shekerinska identified threats stretching from the Arctic to the Mediterranean and Black Sea region, including missile and drone attacks, cyber threats, and instability in NATO’s southern neighborhood. She urged allies to accelerate defense industrial production to ensure credible deterrence capabilities against these persistent dangers. The upcoming summit presents a crucial opportunity to demonstrate delivery on commitments made in The Hague last year regarding increased defense investments, she noted.

Panel participants

Following her keynote address, Türkiye’s Permanent Representative to NATO Ambassador Basat Oztürk, National Defense Commission Chair Hulusi Akar, NATO Acting Assistant Secretary General for Operations Burcu San, and Belgian Air Force Maj. Gen. Harold Van Pee joined discussions on adapting the alliance to emerging risks. The panel highlighted Ankara’s longstanding contribution to collective security and its role in addressing modern warfare challenges. The event formed part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce transatlantic cooperation ahead of critical alliance meetings.

Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Slovenia have proposed a "step-by-step" model for integrating Western Balkan countries into the EU's single market, according to a confidential document circulated among member states and reported by Euractiv on Wednesday.

The five EU members outlined a framework for "systematic sectoral integration" that would allow candidate countries to gradually participate in EU programs as they align with European rules, the document stated. It suggested expanding access to transport, energy, digital markets, competitiveness strategies, and critical raw materials while maintaining merit-based criteria.

Safeguards and strategic aims

The paper included provisions to revoke access if candidate countries backtrack on reforms after entering parts of the single market, according to the report. It further called on EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos to advance new proposals along these lines, arguing the approach would strengthen the single market and help counter the influence of third countries, including Russia and China.

The proposal comes as Western Balkan capitals seek accelerated integration amid growing concerns over geopolitical competition in the region. "To sustain the momentum of enlargement and advance European integration, strong and attractive incentives are needed," the five countries said in the confidential document.

Lithuanian authorities activated NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission and issued emergency warnings to residents after detecting a suspected drone near the eastern border, prompting evacuations of top officials and temporary closure of the capital's airport.

Lithuania issued an air alert across its capital Vilnius and several eastern border regions on Wednesday after military radar detected a suspected drone near the frontier, prompting authorities to activate NATO's Baltic Air Policing mission and urge residents to seek immediate shelter.

NATO mission activated after radar detection

The Lithuanian military said it scrambled NATO air defense assets after picking up the unidentified object on radar early Wednesday morning. Authorities initially issued warnings for the Ignalina, Utena, Zarasai and Svencionys districts before extending the alert to include Vilnius and surrounding municipalities — a precautionary measure the military described as standard procedure similar to recent incidents in neighboring Latvia and Estonia.

Government evacuations and transport disruption

Vilnius airport suspended all operations at approximately 10 am local time as the alert took effect, while train services across the country faced temporary disruptions with passengers evacuated to safe areas at stations. Presidential aide Frederikas Jansonas said President Gitanas Nauseda and his staff were escorted to emergency shelters, adding that lawmakers and parliamentary staff were also moved to underground facilities and Prime Minister Inga Ruginiene was taken to a secure location.

Drone confirmed over Vilnius district

National Crisis Management Centre head Vilmantas Vitkauskas later confirmed that "one drone was sighted over Vilnius district," though the object's origin and intent remained unclear. The armed forces had earlier issued urgent instructions to residents — "Air alert! Immediately head to a shelter or a safe space" — as the situation developed.

Poland on Wednesday voiced deep concern over Israeli military actions against activists aboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla and called on Tel Aviv to provide an urgent explanation.

Respect for international law

In a statement, the Polish Foreign Ministry said it is “observing with great concern the actions” taken by Israeli forces against activists whose declared goal is to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. “Respect for international law, including the international law of the sea and international humanitarian law, is the duty of all states,” the ministry noted. It underlined that one of the fundamental principles of the law of the sea is freedom of navigation on the high seas, adding that ships are subject to the exclusive authority and jurisdiction of the flag state. “This freedom cannot be restricted or violated by other states,” the statement said.

Detention of Polish citizens

Citing reports of Polish citizens being detained aboard one of the flotilla’s vessels, the ministry expressed hope that their safety will not be violated and that their rights will be fully respected. Warsaw expects an “urgent clarification” of all circumstances surrounding the Israeli operation on the high seas. The Global Sumud Flotilla announced on Tuesday that Israel had seized all 50 vessels in its aid convoy, which carried 428 people from 44 countries, including 78 Turkish citizens. Türkiye has strongly condemned the interception and continues to call for the unconditional release of all detained activists.

The number of British tourists visiting Türkiye has seen a steady increase despite global and regional tensions, reaching nearly 4.5 million annually, according to UK Ambassador to Ankara Jill Morris.

Tourism numbers continue to rise

In an exclusive interview with Anadolu in Antalya, where she concluded a weeklong tour of Türkiye’s Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, Morris said: “When I arrived in 2023 there were 3.8 million British visitors (annually) and we now have almost 4½ million British visitors coming to Türkiye, and I'm sure that those numbers will continue to grow.” She noted that Türkiye is a popular destination not only for its beaches but also for its rich culture, archaeological sites, and cuisine. British visitors remain the third-largest group of tourists to Türkiye by nationality.

Strategic partnership and defense cooperation

Morris highlighted the recent signing of a new bilateral strategic partnership framework during Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s visit to London, laying the groundwork for deeper collaboration. She noted that the UK and Türkiye are already working together in the Balkans and are looking to expand into Africa and other regions. On defense, she said cooperation continues to grow, with opportunities to strengthen NATO’s overall defense capability. She also confirmed that negotiations for a modernized free trade agreement are continuing, with another round expected soon in Ankara.

NATO summit and post-Assad Syria

Morris emphasized the importance of Türkiye hosting the NATO leaders’ summit in Ankara this July, saying the UK looks forward to working closely with Turkish colleagues in the run-up to the event. She also noted that the UK is working closely with Türkiye and the new Syrian government to support a secure, united, and prosperous Syria in the post-Assad era. Reflecting on her three-year term ending soon, Morris said serving in Türkiye had been a “tremendous honor and privilege.”

The EU Council Presidency and European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on two regulations to implement tariff-related elements of the August 2025 EU-US Joint Statement, including removing duties on US industrial goods, expanding preferential access for seafood and agricultural products, and extending lobster tariff suspensions. The deal strengthens transatlantic economic ties.

European Union institutions struck a provisional agreement late Tuesday on two regulations designed to implement the tariff-related components of the EU-US Joint Statement of August 21, 2025, marking a significant step toward formalizing parts of the transatlantic trade package. The deal, reached between the Council Presidency and the European Parliament, aims to ensure a more stable and predictable trade relationship while embedding safeguards that allow the EU to respond if its economic interests are threatened. Greek Cypriot Energy, Commerce and Industry Minister Michael Damianos said the agreement confirms the EU’s role as a reliable trade partner. “Maintaining a stable, predictable and balanced transatlantic partnership is in the interest of both sides. Today, the European Union delivers on its commitments,” he said.

Tariff provisions

The first regulation removes remaining customs duties on US industrial goods and expands preferential access for selected American exports, including through tariff rate quotas and reduced tariffs on certain seafood products and non-sensitive agricultural goods. A second regulation extends the suspension of duties on lobster imports, including processed lobster. The provisional agreement must still be formally endorsed by both the Council and the European Parliament after legal and technical finalization. Once adopted, the regulations will enter into force the day after publication in the Official Journal, with the lobster measure applying retroactively from August 1, 2025.

US President Donald Trump will visit France in June to take part in the Group of Seven (G7) leaders’ summit, local media reported on Tuesday. This year’s summit will be held in the southeastern French town of Evian-les-Bains from June 15 to 17. The G7 brings together seven of the world’s largest advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with the European Union also participating as a member.

Summit agenda

The G7 serves as the primary platform for member countries to discuss and coordinate responses to major global economic, financial, and geopolitical challenges. This year’s agenda is expected to focus on the economic fallout from the Iran war, the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, energy security, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump’s attendance comes amid strained relations with some European allies over his trade tariffs and unilateral ceasefire extensions with Iran. French President Macron is expected to push for a unified European position on Hormuz navigation.

Türkiye has called on Greece to abandon “groundless allegations” related to the Pontus claims, urging Athens to focus on peace and cooperation instead of “hostility from history.” Ankara accused Greece of exploiting history for political concerns and teaching unfounded narratives in schools.

Türkiye has strongly rejected Greek events and statements surrounding the Pontus claims, urging Athens to refrain from “distorting history” and instead pursue constructive bilateral relations. In a statement on Tuesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry noted that May 19 — the day in 1919 when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk arrived in Samsun to launch the Turkish War of Independence — is celebrated across Türkiye as the Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth, and Sports Day.

Historical allegations and counter-claims

The ministry accused Greece of advancing “groundless allegations” through legislation adopted in 1994 over the Pontus issue and noted that such narratives are unfortunately being taught in Greek schools. “Greece should cease exploiting history for political concerns,” the statement read. Ankara argued that Athens is trying to “cover up” its historical defeat and alleged atrocities committed during its military campaign in Anatolia. The ministry cited “war crimes and atrocities” by the Greek army, documented in Allied investigation commission reports and Article 59 of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.

Call for peace and cooperation

Türkiye also reminded Greece of historical events including the Tripolitsa massacre of 1821 and violence following the occupation of Izmir on May 15, 1919. “We invite Greece, instead of distorting facts and deriving hostility from history, to take an attitude that will develop our bilateral relations in peace and cooperation,” the ministry said. The exchange comes amid broader regional tensions, with Türkiye and Greece remaining at odds over Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean issues, though both are NATO allies. Ankara has consistently called for dialogue and confidence-building measures.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that rising regional tensions underscore the strategic importance of Türkiye-EU relations. He called for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, updating the Customs Union, and increasing international pressure on Israel.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has emphasised that escalating regional conflicts highlight the strategic necessity of stronger Türkiye-European Union ties. In a phone call with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday, Erdoğan discussed bilateral relations alongside regional and global developments, according to a statement from Türkiye’s Communications Directorate on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

Ceasefire efforts and the Strait of Hormuz

Erdoğan stated that Türkiye has been actively working to maintain a ceasefire and secure peace in the ongoing regional conflict, adding that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened as soon as possible. He accused Israel of seeking to prolong regional conflicts and continuing to violate international law — including acts described as piracy — and stressed the need to increase international pressure on Israel.

Economic integration and security cooperation

The Turkish president underlined that Türkiye’s inclusion in Europe’s security strategy initiatives would be mutually beneficial. He called for an update to the Turkish-EU Customs Union and urged expanded cooperation across all fields to strengthen economic integration and advance shared interests. The call reflects Ankara’s continued push for closer engagement with Brussels amid heightened geopolitical turbulence, including the Iran war, energy supply disruptions, and instability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Italy warns EU energy rules may block SAFE program

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has asked Brussels to extend energy crisis fiscal exemptions, warning that Rome’s participation in the SAFE program could otherwise collapse. The European Commission declined to change its stance, saying existing EU funds and flexibilities should be used first.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni has formally requested that the European Commission broaden fiscal flexibility rules linked to the energy crisis, cautioning that Italy might otherwise be forced to abandon the SAFE program, according to ANSA News Agency.

Meloni’s warning to Brussels

In a letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Meloni argued that exemptions currently granted for defense spending under the Stability Pact should also apply to energy crisis expenditures. “The Stability Pact exemption for defense must be extended to energy crisis spending, or Italy’s activation of the SAFE program is at risk,” she wrote. The prime minister added that soaring energy costs and heightened geopolitical tensions make it increasingly difficult to justify SAFE’s use without broader exemptions, expressing confidence that the Commission would understand “the scope and urgency of this request.”

Commission holds its ground

The European Commission responded by stating its position remains unchanged. A spokesperson confirmed receipt of Meloni’s letter but declined to comment further on its content, saying, “Our position has not changed.” The EU executive noted that member states already have “a range of options available to them to address the current energy crisis” and that the National Escape Clause is not under consideration at this stage. The spokesperson emphasized that current efforts should focus on “fully exploiting the EU funding already available, which is truly substantial,” while adding that Brussels “continues to closely monitor developments and stands ready to act accordingly, including by making use of existing flexibilities.”

Wider implications for Europe

The dispute highlights growing friction between southern European capitals and Brussels over fiscal rules during overlapping energy and security crises. As EU members struggle with elevated power prices and supply uncertainties, has pursued its own energy security strategy, including Black Sea gas discoveries and expanded LNG infrastructure, positioning itself as a regional energy hub while watching European internal debates closely.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday condemned a drone attack that sparked a fire near the United Arab Emirates' Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, warning that strikes on nuclear facilities endanger regional safety and calling on Iran to de-escalate and return to diplomatic talks.

Speaking through the social media platform X, Merz said his government strongly condemned the renewed airstrikes against the UAE and other partners, noting that attacks on nuclear infrastructure pose a threat to people throughout the entire region. "Iran must enter into serious negotiations with the United States, stop threatening its neighbors, and open the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions," he said, renewing his call for a diplomatic solution.

UAE confirms interception

Merz issued his condemnation after UAE authorities reported that air defense systems intercepted two drones and tracked a third that struck an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah facility, sparking a fire. Emirati officials stated there were no injuries and no impact on radiological safety levels, adding that the incident posed no risk to the public or the environment.

Facility background

The Barakah facility — the UAE's first commercial nuclear power plant — represents a critical component of the nation's infrastructure, with officials emphasizing its role in the energy grid. Merz's comments come as regional tensions continue to drive concerns over the safety of strategic installations throughout the Gulf.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called on the bloc to act more strategically to maintain its geopolitical role amid declining global development aid. She stressed the need to better align aid, trade, and security tools while warning that the Iran war is driving energy and fertilizer crises.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas warned on Monday that the European Union must adopt a more strategic approach if it wishes to remain a relevant geopolitical actor, as global development aid continues to decline.

Better alignment of tools needed

Speaking in Brussels ahead of a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council focused on development, Kallas said Europe remains “the largest donor in the world of humanitarian aid and development aid,” but stressed that resources must be used more effectively. “That means that we have to match our tools … to the needs of our partners, but also to take into consideration our own interests,” she added. She pointed to limited resources under initiatives such as the Global Gateway, saying: “We have to be more strategic about this, where our input has the most impact.”

Flexible partnerships and Iran war fallout

Kallas indicated that the EU should remain flexible in its partnerships, noting: “If a partner supports Russia or Iran, then … we can realign our engagement.” She also warned about the wider impact of the war in Iran, particularly on vulnerable populations. “We see the energy prices rising, we see the inflation, … and also the crisis of fertilizers that … might bring about famine,” she said. The EU, she added, is deepening cooperation with regional actors, including Gulf countries, while continuing to support UN efforts to assist those most affected. Türkiye, as an EU candidate and a key regional power, continues to engage with the bloc on development, trade, and migration issues, while monitoring the EU’s evolving strategic posture.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure declared that G7 finance ministers meeting in Paris will demonstrate the value of multilateralism amid Middle East tensions. He warned that current global growth is “clearly unsustainable” and called for a return to a more sustainable growth model.

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure said on Monday that the G7 will prove the effectiveness of multilateralism as finance ministers from the world’s largest economies gather in Paris for a two-day meeting amid ongoing Middle East tensions.

Unsustainable global growth

“I think today we are going to show that multilateralism is useful and that it works,” Lescure told reporters ahead of the meeting. He stressed the need to demonstrate that countries can tackle shared challenges together, pointing to unsustainable global imbalances, the growing importance of raw materials and critical minerals, and crises severely affecting vulnerable nations. “The way global growth is unfolding today is clearly unsustainable. We must address this and commit to one another to ensure that we return to a more sustainable growth model,” he said.

Middle East tensions loom over talks

The meeting takes place against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, triggering retaliatory attacks and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect on April 8, but talks failed to secure a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended indefinitely by President Trump, though the US has maintained a naval blockade on Iranian maritime traffic since April 13. Türkiye continues to support multilateral platforms for resolving global economic and security challenges and advocates for inclusive dialogue to address the root causes of regional instability.

As G7 finance ministers meet in Paris, Germany’s vice chancellor warns that a potential conflict in Iran and any blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would deliver a major shock to the world economy. Berlin urges de-escalation and stresses Europe must reduce dependency on external energy and supply routes.

Ahead of high-level G7 talks in Paris, Germany has issued a stark warning over the economic fallout of a possible war in Iran, particularly if the strategic Strait of Hormuz faces any disruption.

Germany’s warning on Iran conflict

“The situation poses a serious threat to global economic stability,” said German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil before departing for the French capital. He emphasized that any military escalation in the Gulf region would severely harm global development and trade flows.

Focus on Hormuz and global energy security

The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital artery for oil and gas shipments worldwide. Klingbeil stressed that all diplomatic efforts must aim to end hostilities permanently, secure free navigation, and bring stability back to the region. “Our European path is clear: we prioritize cooperation over confrontation,” he was quoted as saying by German news agency dpa.

European resilience

The German minister’s remarks also highlighted the need for Germany and Europe to become “more independent and resilient” in raw materials, energy, and supply chains.

G7 agenda and emerging economies

The G7 finance ministers’ meeting, starting Monday, will also include counterparts from Brazil, India, South Korea, and Kenya.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Russia's nuclear arsenal serves as the "cornerstone" of national security, protecting the country from existential threats, while noting that growing discussion within the European Union about potential negotiations with Moscow marks a significant shift in the bloc's position.

Nuclear Deterrence Doctrine

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Sunday described nuclear weapons as the "cornerstone" of Russia's national security architecture, stating that the country's atomic arsenal provides the ultimate guarantee against threats to its existence. Speaking to Russian media outlet Vesti, Peskov emphasized that a nuclear power cannot face existential threats, which forms the basis of Moscow's deterrence strategy.

"A nuclear power cannot be threatened; its existence cannot be threatened. This is what gives us the opportunity to be confident in this, and this is the basis of nuclear deterrence," Peskov said, according to Vesti. He added that this strategic posture ensures Russia's security amid ongoing tensions with Western powers.

EU Relations and Negotiations

Addressing the breakdown in relations with Brussels, Peskov characterized recent discussions within the European Union about potential negotiations with Moscow as a "major shift" that serves Russian interests. He noted that the growing recognition among EU members that dialogue with Russia is inevitable represents a positive development, stressing that Moscow was not responsible for the initial rupture in communications.

Regarding speculation about who might lead potential talks, Peskov dismissed the prospect of EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas serving as an intermediary, stating it is "in her interests not to be a negotiator with Russia." He referenced President Vladimir Putin's earlier statement that any suitable mediator would be someone "who hasn't said a lot of bad things" about Moscow.

Strategic Modernization

President Vladimir Putin earlier this week highlighted Russia's ongoing modernization of its nuclear deterrence forces, claiming Moscow has developed advanced weapons systems that possess "no counterparts in the world." Putin attributed this acceleration to the United States' withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002, which prompted Russia to pursue capabilities capable of penetrating existing and future missile defense networks.

The comments came during a video conference with Strategic Missile Forces Commander Sergey Karakayev following the successful test of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile. The new missile system represents a key component of Russia's efforts to maintain strategic parity amid evolving security challenges in Europe.

The Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted 556 drones targeting multiple regions including the capital, leaving four people dead and 21 injured, while Ukrainian authorities reported shooting down 279 Russian drones and sustaining injuries across three regions over the same period.

Drone barrage targets Russian capital

Russia's Defense Ministry said on Sunday that Ukrainian drones killed four people and wounded 21 others in a massive overnight assault targeting multiple regions, with state-run Tass news agency describing the wave of 556 intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles as the largest attack on Moscow in more than a year. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said air defenses shot down 81 drones heading toward the capital overnight, adding that 120 drones had been intercepted over the preceding 24 hours.

Sobyanin stated that 12 people were injured in the attacks, most of them construction workers near a checkpoint at the Moscow Oil Refinery. "The refinery's operations were not disrupted. Three buildings were damaged," he said on Telegram, noting that emergency services had contained the resulting fires without halting production at the strategic facility.

Fatalities reported in Moscow region and border areas

In the Moscow region, Governor Andrei Vorobyov reported three fatalities and four injuries resulting from the drone strikes, according to his statement on the Russian social media platform Max. Belgorod region authorities confirmed one death and two injuries over the same 24-hour period, while Kursk region Governor Aleksandr Hinshtein said three people were injured in border areas as Ukrainian forces continued cross-border operations.

The Defense Ministry listed the intercepted drones as targeting Belgorod, Kaluga, Kursk, Oryol, Bryansk, Voronezh, Tula, Smolensk, Pskov, Lipetsk, Tver and Rostov regions, as well as Krasnodar Krai, the Moscow region, annexed Crimea, and the Black and Azov seas. The ministry did not provide details regarding any infrastructure damage in these areas beyond the capital.

Ukraine reports downing 279 Russian drones overnight

Ukrainian authorities accused Moscow of launching 287 drones overnight and injuring 22 people across the Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia regions. The General Staff said Ukrainian air defenses shot down 279 of the drones, according to the military's statement on Telegram.

Dnipropetrovsk Governor Oleksandr Hanzha said eight people were injured in Russian drone and artillery attacks across four districts of the region. Kharkiv region administration head Oleh Synehubov reported seven injuries over the past 24 hours, and Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov confirmed seven people were wounded in attacks across his region during the same period.
Meloni hails Council of Europe backing for migrant return hubs

Meloni said the declaration recognizes the legitimacy of processing asylum claims in third countries, marking a decisive shift from policies she initiated with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that only a year ago were considered controversial but have now become shared European principles.

Council of Europe endorsement

In a post on the social media platform X, Meloni stated that the declaration adopted during the Council of Europe summit recognizes "the legitimacy for nations of innovative solutions in managing migration flows." She described the endorsement as "an important result" achieved through a process Italy helped initiate with "courage and determination," noting that the 46-member body had embraced approaches previously dismissed as controversial.

Italy-Albania model

The Italian government has pioneered the use of "return hubs" in Albania, where asylum seekers are processed outside EU territory while their claims are examined. Meloni emphasized that the Chisinau Declaration specifically cited this bilateral arrangement as a template for other European nations seeking to control irregular migration. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen worked closely with Rome to advance the proposal within European forums over the past year.

Shift in European policy

Meloni argued that the declaration demonstrates how Italy's approach to "the orderly management of migration flows" has evolved from a national outlier into a continental standard. "The Italian approach... has now also become Europe's approach," she said, asserting that policies deemed contentious twelve months earlier now constitute "a shared principle" across the Council of Europe's membership.

Implementation concerns

The Chisinau Declaration provides political backing for externalization policies that human rights organizations warn could erode protections for refugees and asylum seekers. While supporters argue the hubs deter irregular crossings and accelerate returns, critics contend that outsourcing processing to third countries risks violating non-refoulement obligations under international law. The Council of Europe includes all 27 EU member states alongside 19 additional European nations.

The United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom held talks on Friday focused on strengthening international cooperation to secure maritime routes and ensure the free flow of global trade, according to the official Emirati news agency WAM.

London meeting tackles Iranian attacks

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan met with UK National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell in London. Both sides discussed ways to enhance international cooperation to protect shipping lanes and promote freedom of commerce. The meeting also addressed overall regional developments and “the repercussions” of Iranian attacks that targeted “civilian sites and facilities in the UAE using missiles and drones,” WAM reported. Powell expressed Britain’s solidarity with Abu Dhabi.

Ongoing regional tensions

Regional tensions have remained high since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, prompting retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and US allies in Gulf countries, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect on April 8, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. President Trump later extended the truce indefinitely while maintaining a blockade on vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports through the strategic waterway. Türkiye continues to advocate for de-escalation and dialogue, warning that disruption to Gulf maritime routes threatens global energy security.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Friday that Europe could emerge as a decisive "third actor" as the United States and China compete for global dominance, invoking ancient history to warn that exhausted rivals often cede ground to rising powers.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said on Friday that Europe possesses the capacity to serve as a "third actor" in an era of intensifying strategic competition between Washington and Beijing. Drawing on classical history, he argued that peripheral powers often prevail when established rivals exhaust themselves in prolonged conflict.

In a post on the social media platform X, Barrot referenced the so-called "Thucydides Trap" — a term describing the inherent risk of conflict between a rising power and a ruling one. He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump have both invoked the concept, which derives from the ancient Greek historian's account of the Peloponnesian War.

Ancient analogy

Barrot drew a direct parallel between the ancient conflict and contemporary geopolitics, observing that while Athens and Sparta spent decades depleting their resources in mutual destruction, the kingdom of Macedonia was quietly consolidating military, economic and financial strength. "In the end, it was Macedonia that prevailed," he wrote, suggesting that Europe could replicate such a trajectory if it demonstrates sufficient political will.

The French minister framed the continent's potential elevation as a matter of choice rather than inevitability, asking rhetorically who the modern-day Macedonia might be. "Who could this third actor be today? It will be Europe, if we have the courage and the will," Barrot stated, adding that this vision represents the core of French diplomatic advocacy.

Beijing context

Barrot's remarks followed recent discussions between Xi and Trump in Beijing, where the Chinese leader explicitly invoked the Thucydides Trap framework during their exchange. The meeting highlighted ongoing tensions between the world's two largest economies, with both sides seeking to navigate a relationship characterized by deep economic interdependence and sharpening security competition.

The concept has gained renewed currency in Western capitals as Washington and Beijing manage disputes over trade tariffs and technological dominance. European leaders have increasingly emphasized strategic autonomy as a means of insulating the continent from great power friction while asserting independent diplomatic influence.

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides accused Türkiye of committing “one of the biggest crimes of the post-war European era” in a speech to the Greek parliament, urging the EU and international organizations to “take action” over Cyprus.

The leader of the Greek Cypriot administration, Nikos Christodoulides, launched a scathing attack on Türkiye during a speech to the Greek parliament, calling on European and international bodies to intervene, as Israel’s project to turn Cyprus into a “satellite state” in the Eastern Mediterranean gains momentum.

‘Biggest crime of post-war Europe’

Christodoulides claimed that Türkiye continues to occupy 37% of the island, alleging that “one of the biggest crimes of the post-war European era is being committed.” He said: “For 52 years, Türkiye has been violating international and European law. Cyprus is being occupied, colonized, and fundamental human rights are being violated.” He also rejected a two-state solution, stating: “A two-state solution cannot exist even as a thought. We will never accept the legitimization of illegality.”

Turkish Cypriots reject Greek Cypriot claims

Christodoulides called for the reunification of the island under a federal model, a position long rejected by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), which advocates for a two-state solution based on equal sovereignty. His remarks come as Türkiye has submitted its “Blue Homeland” doctrine to parliament for legislation, asserting its maritime rights in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Israel’s growing footprint in Cyprus

The Greek Cypriot leader has increasingly aligned with Israel and Greece. In December, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, along with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Christodoulides, held a joint press conference targeting Türkiye. Netanyahu declared: “For those who dream of building empires over our lands, forget it. That will not happen.” Following that alignment, Israel’s presence in Cyprus has expanded, with reports last week that Israeli entities purchased a long-abandoned village in the south, raising concerns among local communities. Türkiye has repeatedly warned against any steps that threaten the rights and security of Turkish Cypriots and has vowed to protect their interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez voiced his support for Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal on Thursday, following criticism from Israel’s defense minister over the teenager’s public display of solidarity with Palestinians.

Sanchez hits back at Israeli minister

In a post on X, Sanchez responded to Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz’s accusation that Yamal was “inciting hatred against Israel.” Sanchez wrote that those who consider waving a state’s flag as “inciting hatred” have “either lost their judgment or been blinded by their own ignominy.” He added: “Lamine has only expressed the solidarity with Palestine felt by millions of Spaniards. Another reason to be proud of him.”

Flag-waving during Barcelona celebrations

The 18-year-old Spain international was seen waving a Palestinian flag as Barcelona’s team toured the city’s streets during celebrations attended by approximately 750,000 people.

Britain's NATO military representative Lieutenant General Eldon Millar has described the United Kingdom and Türkiye as "the bookends of the alliance," praising Ankara's pivotal role as a bridge between continents ahead of the NATO Summit scheduled for July 7-8.

Strategic anchors

Speaking to Anadolu in Ankara ahead of the summit, Millar emphasized that the two countries represent the geographic and strategic anchors of NATO — the UK in the northwest and Türkiye spanning the critical junction of North-South and East-West. "If you look at what Türkiye brings to the alliance, it's a vital bridge between so many different parts of the world," he said, noting that Ankara has been a member for more than 70 years and participates in almost every alliance operation.

Russia threat and burden-sharing

The British envoy stressed that Russia poses an "imminent and pressing threat" that frames NATO's current strategic posture, adding that European allies are increasingly stepping up to shoulder greater defense responsibilities. Millar pointed to advances in weapons capabilities and new command structures as evidence of Europe's growing contribution to the transatlantic alliance, which he said "has always been and will always be" anchored across the Atlantic.

Bilateral defense cooperation

Millar highlighted robust defense ties between London and Ankara, citing the Eurofighter Typhoon technical agreement and routine joint training exercises that see the two militaries operating "shoulder to shoulder." He noted that UK personnel currently serve under a Turkish general in NATO's Kosovo Force, demonstrating what he called a relationship that has "always been strong" and is given "real substance" through alliance structures.

During his visit, Millar paid respects at Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Republic founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, describing the experience as a privilege that underscored the historic ties between the two nations. The NATO Summit on July 7-8 will gather alliance leaders to discuss burden-sharing and the ongoing response to Russian aggression.

Türkiye’s UN envoy has firmly rejected Greece’s objection to the use of “Turkish Straits,” calling it “unfortunate” and politically motivated. Ankara insists the term is a well-established geographical expression fully compatible with the 1936 Montreux Convention.

Türkiye has dismissed Greece’s formal objection to the use of the term “Turkish Straits” during a recent UN Security Council session, describing the Greek position as politically driven and unhelpful for regional stability. In a May 8 letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Security Council President Fu Cong, Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Yildiz wrote that Greece’s intervention during the April 29 meeting “diverted attention from substantive issues” and appeared to serve domestic considerations.

Geographical accuracy and international usage

Yildiz stated that Türkiye “firmly and totally rejects Greece’s unfounded assertions,” adding that attempts to politicise a widely used geographical term do not contribute to constructive dialogue or the proper understanding of the Montreux Convention. He explained that “Turkish Straits” is a well-established geographical expression collectively referring to the Istanbul Strait and Çanakkale Strait, both under Turkish sovereignty. The term, he noted, has been “conventionally and consistently used in numerous international documents, including resolutions and documents of the IMO and NATO.”

Montreux Convention and historical context

The 1936 Montreux Convention regulates passage through the straits but was not intended to standardise geographical names. Yildzi suggested Greece’s effort to impose alternative terminology could only be explained by “historical aspirations,” stressing that such attempts would not change the waterways’ legal or political status. Greece had argued that the convention uses “the Straits” — namely the Dardanelles, Sea of Marmara, and Bosphorus — and has sought to block use of “Turkish Straits” at both the UN and NATO. For Türkiye, which has fought a decades-long campaign for international recognition of its sovereign rights over the straits, the diplomatic row underscores Ankara’s determination to assert its geographical and legal terminology on the global stage.

The Eurovision Song Contest’s 70th edition has descended into the deepest crisis in its history, as protests and boycotts over Israel’s participation — despite ongoing genocide in Gaza — rocked the event. The first semi-final at Vienna’s Wiener Stadthalle saw Israeli representative Noam Bettan, performing 10th, greeted by audience chants of “Stop the genocide” and Palestinian flags displayed in the hall. Security forcibly ejected protesters wearing “Free Palestine” shirts and carrying Palestinian flags.

Withdrawals and solidarity events

Spain, Slovenia, Ireland, Iceland, and the Netherlands withdrew from the competition in protest over Israel’s inclusion. Several countries refused to broadcast the semi-final, airing Palestine-themed programming instead. Slovenia’s public broadcaster RTV SLO showed documentaries on Gaza under the “Voices of Palestine” banner. In Brussels, an alternative concert titled “Unity for Palestine — No Stage for Genocide” was organised to protest Israel’s Eurovision participation.

Social media controversy and EBU warning

Despite new European Broadcasting Union rules banning government-backed or third-party voting campaigns, the Israeli delegation posted videos urging “Vote 10 times for Israel.” The EBU issued an official warning and demanded the immediate removal of the content, which Israel’s public broadcaster KAN reportedly complied with. The controversy has reignited criticism of the EBU’s double standards, with activists noting that Russia was excluded from Eurovision over the Ukraine war while Israel continues to compete.

A panel in Warsaw organised by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate and Poland’s Center for Eastern Studies highlighted the upcoming Ankara NATO summit as a critical opportunity to reinforce allied unity.

Ahead of the July NATO summit in Ankara, a panel held in Warsaw has underscored the importance of strengthening unity and solidarity among allies amid growing global instability. The event, titled “The Future of NATO and Poland-Türkiye Defense Cooperation,” was organised by Türkiye’s Communications Directorate in cooperation with Poland’s Center for Eastern Studies (OSW).

Summit preparations and bilateral defence

The closed-door panel, moderated by OSW’s Karol Wasilewski, brought together Turkish Ambassador to Warsaw Rauf Alp Denktas, Polish officials, academics, and think tank experts. Participants noted that the current climate of conflict — including the Russia-Ukraine war and Middle East instability — has made the July 7-8 NATO summit in Ankara a critical moment to reinforce allied cohesion. The panel also examined Türkiye’s perspective on NATO, its contributions since joining the alliance, and its strategic role within the bloc.

European outreach ahead of Ankara summit

The Communications Directorate has been organising events in allied capitals across Europe in the run-up to the summit. The Warsaw panel specifically focused on NATO’s future and bilateral defence cooperation between Türkiye and Poland — two allies that have deepened military collaboration in recent years, including joint exercises and defence industry projects. Türkiye continues to position itself as an indispensable NATO member bridging Europe, the Black Sea, and the Middle East.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte outlined “NATO 3.0” as a vision for a stronger Europe within a stronger alliance, urging European members to take greater responsibility for conventional defense while the US provides nuclear backing. He said the “ball is in Putin’s court” on peace talks.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday described “NATO 3.0” as a strategic vision for “a stronger Europe in a stronger NATO,” emphasizing that the transatlantic alliance remains anchored in cooperation with the United States while pushing European allies to shoulder more responsibility for their own conventional defense.

Russia remains the top threat

Speaking after a meeting of the Bucharest Nine (B9), Rutte said Russia remains “the most significant and direct threat” to the alliance due to its ongoing war in Ukraine. “We cannot let down our guard. We will always do what is necessary to defend every inch of NATO territory,” he said, highlighting strengthened deterrence measures along NATO’s eastern flank and in the High North. He called for further increases in military capabilities, defense production, and spending ahead of this year’s NATO summit in Ankara.

‘Ball is in Putin’s court’ on Ukraine

Rutte explained that “NATO 3.0” envisions European members assuming greater responsibility for conventional defense while the US continues to provide nuclear and conventional backing. He praised President Trump for pushing allies to boost defense spending, noting that some NATO members are now planning to exceed the 5% target before 2035. Addressing tensions over the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, Rutte acknowledged “disappointment in the United States” over some allies’ reactions but said European countries have “heard the message.” On Russia-Ukraine, he stressed the need to continue supporting Ukraine militarily. “The ball is clearly in Putin’s court. He has to play ball. He is not doing that yet,” Rutte said. Türkiye, as a key NATO ally hosting the upcoming Ankara summit, continues to advocate for alliance unity and a balanced approach to both European and regional security challenges.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken on Wednesday lauded Türkiye’s defense industry achievements, particularly in unmanned systems and innovation, urging Belgium to accelerate its own military modernization and drone expansion.

Baykar visit left lasting impression

Speaking at the Türkiye-Belgium Defense Industry Day in Ankara, organized by the Secretariat of Turkish Defence Industries, Francken said cooperation between Turkish and Belgian defense firms has grown following earlier contacts. He recalled visiting Turkish drone manufacturer Baykar three years ago with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, describing the experience as “mind-blowing.” “What I saw at Baykar – all those capabilities, the new technology, the innovation, the R&D, the drive and the growth – was mind-blowing for me,” he said. He told colleagues in Belgium that Türkiye is “way ahead” in defense modernization and unmanned warfare. “We also need to modernize our army and armed forces and move toward more unmanned capabilities, innovation and adaptation,” he added.

Belgium boosts defense budget by 60%

Francken said one of his first decisions as defense minister was appointing what he called the world’s first “drone general” to lead Belgium’s military transformation. He noted that Belgium is increasing its defense budget by 60%—the largest rise among NATO allies—with potential for further increases. He expects Belgian and Turkish companies to sign seven or eight agreements, with negotiations ongoing on several others. “For me, foreign trade is about contacts and contracts,” he said.

Turkish official hails ‘historic’ visit

Haluk Görgün, Secretary of Turkish Defence Industries, described the Belgian delegation’s visit as “historic” for Türkiye’s defense sector, noting that more than 4,000 companies operate in the industry. He emphasized that cooperation opportunities range from platform-level systems to subsystems and components. “We are not limited to seven or eight agreements. We are open to cooperation at every level,” Görgün said, adding that further announcements could come ahead of upcoming NATO meetings. Türkiye continues to expand its defense exports and partnerships with European allies, with Belgian officials recognizing Ankara’s growing role in shaping NATO’s technological future.

In a post on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Yılmaz said: “We are pleased that our relations with Belgium, our NATO ally and partner, are gaining new momentum in areas such as trade, energy, connectivity, defense industry and digital transformation.” He noted that bilateral trade volume reached $9.2 billion in 2025, with both countries aiming to increase the figure further in the coming years.

Defense cooperation and EU relations

Yılmaz emphasized that both nations are determined to strengthen defense cooperation within the NATO framework while deepening joint work on “strategic issues such as the Middle Corridor and energy security.” He also highlighted the importance of “a constructive, inclusive and strategic approach” in Türkiye-EU relations.
Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said Türkiye and Ukraine are reshaping NATO doctrine through advances in drones, AI, and defense innovation. He called on other nations to follow their example, warning that “when you stand still, you lose the war.”

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken stated that Türkiye and Ukraine are leading the transformation of modern warfare, arguing that other countries must adapt to the changing nature of conflict by following their example in drone technology, artificial intelligence, and defense systems.

NATO doctrine being reshaped

Speaking to Anadolu during Belgium’s economic mission to Türkiye, Francken said NATO’s military doctrine is being reshaped by lessons from the war in Ukraine and developments in Türkiye’s defense industry. “There are two countries that really understand this – Ukraine and Türkiye. All other countries have to follow,” he said. He described the Belgian delegation’s visit as the largest trade and economic mission in the history of bilateral relations, with more than 100 meetings held in Istanbul and Ankara and numerous agreements signed, including defense cooperation deals.

Turkish defense industry ‘mind-blowing’

Francken highlighted visits to Turkish defense firms, including Baykar and military shipyards, noting that Turkish companies in innovation, R&D, AI, drones, and counter-drone systems are transforming NATO’s strategic outlook. Describing Turkish defense technologies as “mind-blowing,” he said NATO exercises and battlefield developments in Ukraine have shown the growing importance of drone warfare. “We need to change our way of fighting as well, because otherwise others are training continuously. We have to be ready,” he said. He noted that Belgium has appointed its first general responsible for drone innovation and is working on a counter-drone program worth over $1 billion, with opportunities for Turkish companies.

Dozens of agreements and EU cooperation

Francken said 37 agreements and letters of intent were signed in Istanbul, including a defense ministry deal on operational training and demining efforts in the Strait of Hormuz and the Black Sea. He also voiced support for modernizing the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and for Ankara’s inclusion in the EU’s SAFE loan mechanism. On the 2026 NATO summit in Ankara, he called for unity and increased defense production capacity. “United we stand, divided we fall,” he said. Türkiye continues to strengthen its defense ties with European NATO allies while advancing its indigenous military technologies.

Turkish interests must be considered at Ankara NATO summit: Ischinger

Munich Security Conference Chairman Wolfgang Ischinger said NATO must take Turkish interests into account at the July summit in Ankara, stressing the need for a strong message of “unity, determination and cohesion” to be sent from Türkiye.

The chairman of the Munich Security Conference said on Wednesday that Turkish interests must be given due consideration during NATO’s upcoming summit in Ankara this July, emphasizing the strategic importance of the host nation.

A strong message of unity needed

Speaking at a panel during the 10th Black Sea and Balkans Security Summit in Bucharest, Wolfgang Ischinger highlighted that Türkiye is hosting the summit and noted its proximity to what he described as one of the alliance’s two major security challenges: Iran. Ischinger said NATO countries must understand that it is essential for a strong message of “unity and determination and cohesion” to emerge from the Ankara summit. “The central question is: ‘Is the correct message going to be arriving in Moscow and correctly understood in Moscow?’ … This alliance is about security off and in Europe, and security in and off Europe depends to a significant extent on credible deterrence,” he said.

Türkiye must feel proud of its NATO role

Ischinger argued that the alliance would remain in good shape if it can repeat the positive performance of last year’s NATO summit in The Hague. He stressed that it is in the collective interest to ensure Türkiye is happy with the summit and draws the conclusion that it is a “proud member” of NATO. “So, in other words, let’s make sure that we take Turkish interests, in an appropriate manner, into account to make it a success for all of us, including the host country Türkiye. I think that is very important,” he added. He defined the current period as “one of fundamental changes,” citing the raising of defense spending commitments from 2% to 5% of GDP and the impact of technological advances on military balance.

Symbolic significance of Ankara summit

Sorin Ducaru, honorary chairman of the New Strategy Center’s Scientific Council, said at the same panel that it is “highly symbolic” that the NATO summit is being held in Türkiye. He noted that Türkiye is not only on NATO’s eastern flank but also “radiates” to the south and the Middle East, bringing together all strategic interests. The Ankara NATO summit will take place on July 7-8, marking the second NATO summit held in Türkiye, following the 2004 Istanbul summit. Türkiye continues to play a pivotal role within the alliance, bridging Europe, the Black Sea, and the Middle East.

Former European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has revealed that an unnamed Eurogroup finance minister proposed selling Athens’ iconic Acropolis to help Greece pay off its debts during the peak of its economic crisis. Juncker recalled telling the minister: “Be quiet.”

A bombshell revelation has emerged from Europe’s debt crisis era: a Eurozone finance minister once suggested that Greece sell its ancient Acropolis to raise funds. Jean-Claude Juncker, former European Commission President and former Eurogroup chief, made the claim in the documentary series “Sto Xiliosto” broadcast by Skai TV.

‘Be quiet, I said’

Juncker, who chaired the Eurogroup from 2005 to 2013, said the proposal came during a Eurogroup meeting when Greece was struggling under a mountain of debt. He declined to name the minister but noted that the person was a woman. Juncker recalled: “I remember some finance ministers proposing to sell the Acropolis to find money. I told them, ‘Be quiet.’” He did not specify whether the suggestion was literal or figurative.

Loss of trust opened doors to extreme ideas

Juncker explained that after Greece admitted to having misrepresented its budget data, it suffered a massive loss of credibility. “That was a huge mistake. After admitting that it had misled others, Greece was no longer trusted. That was the real problem. Because of that, everyone felt they could say anything about Greece,” he said. The anecdote underscores how severe loss of trust can lead to extreme and humiliating proposals.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Tuesday that 11 African nations have joined a long-standing initiative led by France and Mexico aimed at restricting the use of the veto power at the UN Security Council during mass atrocity situations.

Total supporters rise to 118

In a statement posted on X, Barrot said the new endorsements were announced during the Africa Forward Summit in Kenya. “A step has been taken to protect the world's people from mass atrocities: genocide, crimes against humanity, and the most serious war crimes,” Barrot said. According to the French minister, the addition of the 11 African countries brings the total number of states supporting the initiative to 118.

Voluntary veto restraint

The initiative, first launched by France and Mexico in 2015, calls on the five permanent members of the UN Security Council—the US, Russia, China, France, and the UK—to voluntarily refrain from using their veto power in situations involving genocide, crimes against humanity, and large-scale war crimes. The proposal seeks to prevent the Security Council from being paralyzed during major humanitarian crises. Barrot said: “We can no longer wait to restore the UN's effectiveness, which must no longer be hampered by the misuse of the veto. I urge all countries that have not yet done so to join us.” Türkiye has long supported reform of the UN Security Council, including limiting the veto power, and has called for a more representative and accountable multilateral system.

Belgian actress Katrien De Ruysscher and allied activists staged an alternative musical festival in Brussels on Tuesday to protest Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, telling Anadolu exclusively that the initiative titled "United for Palestine" was created after organizers learned Israeli broadcasters would compete in this year's contest while Belgian outlets maintained their planned involvement. The event, which coincided with the Eurovision first semi-final in which Belgium and Israel appeared on the same night, was organized by Belgian NGOs, unions, and solidarity groups who argued that the competition has abandoned its founding values of unity and human rights, featuring former Belgian Eurovision contestants, local musicians, and Palestinian artists who combined musical performances with messages of solidarity under the slogan "Don't watch Eurovision. No stage for genocide."

Normalization concerns

De Ruysscher stated that Israel's inclusion contributes to what she described as the normalization of violence in Gaza, asserting that cultural and academic institutions must give important signals that they do not allow such actions to be normalized through entertainment platforms. "We found that the participation of Israel is very problematic due to the genocide in Gaza," she said, explaining that the counter-event sought to focus on the original meaning of the Eurovision Song Contest, which she defined as uniting people and upholding human rights values. She also criticized Belgian political leaders for failing to take stronger action regarding the war in Gaza, saying "they act too little; they don't do enough," and emphasized that it remains essential for the public and audiences to speak up and continue protesting against the normalization of atrocities.

Double standards

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which organizes Eurovision, has repeatedly defended the contest as a non-political event, but De Ruysscher rejected that argument by pointing to Russia's exclusion from the competition following the war with Ukraine. "They say Eurovision is not political, but they made it political... Russia is not allowed to participate; Israel is. I think within the form that the Eurovision Song Contest is right now, it has no future," she said, predicting that this weekend's final would determine the competition's future legitimacy and adding that the event must return to its founding values established after the Second World War, when the contest was designed to unite countries rather than divide them.

De Ruysscher stressed that artists bear a moral responsibility to address political and humanitarian crises rather than remain silent, stating that arts and culture are always related to the world we live in and that performers carry a valuable voice that must be heard. "I think artists have to speak up," she said, calling on cultural figures to use their platforms rather than remain complicit. Broadcasters in Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain decided to withdraw from this year's competition in Vienna following the EBU's decision to allow Israel to compete, while the final is scheduled for Saturday.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has offered striking praise for Türkiye’s expanding naval capabilities, noting that Ankara is quietly building a formidable maritime presence while the world focuses elsewhere. “While all eyes are focused on the naval arms race between China and the US, Türkiye is quietly emerging as a maritime power,” Francken wrote on X following his visit to Sedef Shipyard in Istanbul.

Domestic production and global competitiveness

Francken observed that Türkiye is not only ordering but also domestically constructing submarines, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, and aircraft carriers. “They are doing so quickly, with high quality and competitive prices. Turkish naval vessels are gradually gaining ground on the global market,” he added. He also noted that the Turkish economy has grown rapidly over the past two decades while successfully navigating recent inflationary pressures. “Hard times require hard measures,” he said, citing a key lesson from Türkiye’s economic management.

Strategic gateway

Francken, part of the Belgian economic mission led by Queen Mathilde, also remarked that “Istanbul is not only a gateway to Central Asia, but also to the Arab world — including in the media sphere. All major Arab media outlets are represented here.” His comments underscored the deepening defence and trade ties between Brussels and Ankara, with Türkiye’s naval industry emerging as a significant player in NATO’s southern flank and global arms markets.
