McLaren driver Lando Norris captured a crucial victory at the Mexico Grand Prix on Sunday, simultaneously claiming his sixth race win of the season and seizing the Formula 1 world championship lead from teammate Oscar Piastri. The British driver dominated the 20th round of the championship at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit, completing the 71-lap race in 1 hour, 37 minutes, and 58.574 seconds.

Race Performance and Championship Implications

Starting from pole position, Norris delivered a commanding performance on the 4.3-kilometer circuit to secure maximum championship points. The victory propelled him to the top of the drivers' standings with 357 points, just one point ahead of Australian teammate Piastri, who finished outside the podium positions. The result establishes a McLaren one-two at the championship summit with only three races remaining in the season.

Podium Finishers and Notable Incidents

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured second position, crossing the finish line 30.324 seconds behind Norris, while Red Bull's Max Verstappen completed the podium in third place, 31.049 seconds adrift of the race winner. The event saw controversy when Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton received a 10-second penalty for gaining advantage by leaving the track, ultimately dropping him to eighth position in the final classification.

Constructors' Championship and Upcoming Race

McLaren reinforced its commanding position in the constructors' championship, now holding 713 points compared to Ferrari's 356 and Mercedes' 355. Red Bull Racing follows in fourth with 346 points, while Williams occupies fifth position with 111 points. The Formula 1 calendar continues with the Brazilian Grand Prix on November 9, where the intensifying championship battle will resume at Interlagos.

35-year-old German will leave F1 as one of the most successful drivers in history

Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel on Thursday announced he will retire from Formula One at the end of this season.

The 35-year-old German, who leaves the sport as one of the most successful drivers in history, said he made the “difficult” decision to spend more time with his family.

“I love this sport. It has been central to my life since I can remember. But as much as there is life on track, there is my life off track too. Being a racing driver has never been my sole identity,” Vettel said in a video message on Instagram.

“My passion for racing and Formula 1 comes with lots of time spent away from them and takes a lot of energy. Committing to my passion the way I did and the way I think it is right, does no longer go side by side with my wish to be a great father and husband.”

Vettel made his debut with BMW Sauber at the US Grand Prix in 2007.

He rose to worldwide fame during his time with Red Bull Racing, winning four consecutive F1 titles from 2010 to 2013.

He switched to Ferrari in 2015, where he claimed his last race victory in 2019, before joining Aston Martin in 2021.

In world titles, Vettel is only behind Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton and Juan Manuel Fangio.

He bagged 53 race wins in his F1 career – third behind Hamilton and Schumacher – and made 122 podiums.

An Aston Martin statement hailed Vettel as an inspiration for “so many throughout his career, both in Formula One and beyond.”

“We’re proud to call him a teammate, a friend and to have been part of his journey, just as he has been part of ours,” the team said.

Aston Martin boss Lawrence Stroll also thanked the German for “the great work that he has done for Aston Martin over the past year and a half.”

Celebrities and others will take part in an event in Turkey on March 22 to mark World Water Day, carrying water-laden buckets to empathize with people in Africa who walk six kilometers (3.7 miles) on average to access clean water.

IDEA Universal, an organization which fights droughts in Africa, opens water wells in settlements and establishes smart villages with the support of benefactors, is preparing to hold an event that will set an example for the world on the annual UN observance day.

Celebrities from television and social media as well as volunteers from organizations will walk the same distance as Africans during the event on the Formula 1 course in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul.

- ‘Polluted water claims more lives than wars’

Hayri Dagli, the founder and director of IDEA Universal, said polluted water claims more lives than all wars and violence on Earth.

Stating that the event will be a first in Turkey, Dagli said the organization named it ‘Empathy Walk.’

"With volunteers, celebrities and social media influencers in Turkey, we will take a six-kilometer-long walk on the Formula 1 course with buckets in hands as part of the Empathy Walk," he said.

"It is not about finishing the six-kilometer walk. This is what we well underline on World Water Day with our six-kilometer Empathy Walk on the Formula 1 course."

Dagli called on everyone to take action on the water crisis together and noted that many celebrities are supporting and joining them.

He added that they want to draw attention to the water crisis not only in Africa but in Turkey as well.

"Contrary to what is known, it [Turkey] is not a water-rich country. It is a country which feels the water crisis a bit more closely each day. Therefore, it is a responsibility of all of us. We must take action for it.

Lewis Hamilton won the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix for Mercedes on Sunday after French driver Romain Grosjean had a miraculous escape from a fiery first-lap crash that ripped his car in two.

Grosjean's Haas was engulfed in flames after it careered off the road at high speed and speared through the protective barriers lining the floodlit Sakhir track.

The 34-year-old managed to free himself from the wreckage and jump clear. He suffered burns to his hands and is recuperating in a nearby hospital.

Renault's Daniel Ricciardo blasted the "Hollywood" coverage of the crash while Hamilton said the incident showed how dangerous the sport could be.

"It was terrifying to see," said seven-times world champion Hamilton, who took his 95th career win ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with the race ending under the safety car.

"It hits home for a driver, but I am grateful that he is safe and he was able to get out and it is a stark reminder of how dangerous this sport can be.

"It wasn’t easy to get back into the zone and into race mode but the race goes on and that is what we have to do."

Grosjean was voted 'Driver of the Day' by fans.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said they would have pulled out if the Frenchman's injuries had been life-threatening.

"In this day and age a man’s health and life is much more important than a racing event or a sporting event," said Wolff.

Grosjean's crash brought the race to a halt seconds just after the start. It resumed an hour and 20 minutes later after repairs to the barriers.

Immediately after the restart Lance Stroll’s Racing Point was flipped upside down after contact with Daniil Kvyat. The Canadian climbed out unscathed and the safety car was deployed so his car could be removed.

The race then settled into something of a procession and Hamilton cruised unchallenged to his 11th win from 15 races this season, and fifth in a row.

Verstappen said he was unable to put any real pressure on Hamilton

"We were just lacking a bit," said Verstappen.

"We tried to keep close but they always had an answer. It is what it is - second place is good."

It was a Red Bull double on the podium as British-born Thai driver Alexander Albon took third from Sergio Perez after the Racing Point driver suffered a blown engine three laps from the end.

With both Racing Point cars failing to finish McLaren vaulted into third in the constructor standings, with Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz finishing fourth and fifth.

Ricciardo was seventh ahead of Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas, who made a poor start and then suffered a puncture.

Esteban Ocon was ninth in the other Renault ahead of Charles Leclerc, whose Ferrari team mate Sebastian Vettel finished 13th.

Lewis Hamilton can match Michael Schumacher's record seven world championships and overtake the former Ferrari great as the most successful Formula One driver of all time in Turkey on Sunday.

The Mercedes ace, who has a record 93 race wins, will be champion again at the Istanbul Park circuit if his team mate and sole title rival Valtteri Bottas fails to score eight points more.

The 35-year-old Briton leads Bottas by 85 points, with 78 remaining to be won after Turkey when the season heads to the Middle East for a closing triple header in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

That means a second place would be enough even if Bottas wins, providing the Finn does not also take the bonus point for fastest lap.

At its simplest, Hamilton just has to beat Bottas -- something he has done 10 times in 13 races so far this year.

Hamilton, who already holds records for most pole positions, podiums and points finishes, has only twice finished out of the top three in 2020 with a worst result of seventh. He is on a record run of 46 successive scoring finishes.

Mercedes won the constructors' title for an unprecedented seventh year in a row at Imola in Italy on Nov. 1 and are assured of a seventh successive drivers' crown as well.

"We, as a team, have done such a remarkable job," said Hamilton after that success, saying the team title was "almost better" than the drivers'.

Hamilton, who has yet to sign a contract beyond this season, may feel differently on Sunday.

The title race is the focus but Turkey's first race since 2011, as a replacement to fill out a championship depleted by the COVID-19 pandemic, will be welcomed by all.

The circuit, with its Turn Eight triple left-hander, was always a driver favourite even if crowds were small. They will be non-existent this weekend, with the race behind closed doors due to the pandemic.

"It’s a track that made for good racing in the past, so it will be interesting to see how the modern Formula One cars do on it," said Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen, who won the first Turkish Grand Prix for McLaren in 2005.

The battle to be best of the rest behind Mercedes and Red Bull is also on a knife edge, with only a point separating third placed Renault, McLaren and fifth placed Racing Point.

Lewis Hamilton accused Formula One stewards of trying to stop him winning after being handed two time penalties in Sunday's Russian Grand Prix.

The punishment, for infringements before the race had even started, cost the six-times world champion the lead and the chance to fight for a record-equalling 91st career win.

The Mercedes driver finished third after starting on pole position.

"I need to go back and see what the rules are and what exactly I did wrong," the Briton told Sky Sports television after being punished for practice starts outside of the designated area on his way to the grid.

"I'm pretty sure no-one's got two five-second penalties for something so ridiculous before," he added.

"I didn't put anyone in danger. I've done this at a million tracks over the years and never been questioned on it. So it is what it is."

The stewards also handed Hamilton two penalty points on his licence, leaving him two short of incurring a one-race ban triggered by 12 in a 12-month period.

Asked if that seemed excessive, he replied: "Of course it is. But it's to be expected. They're trying to stop me, aren't they?"

"But it's OK. I just need to keep my head down and stay focused and we'll see what happens." We've been there forever. History creates pressure too and we're looking forward to the next 1,000," he added.

"We're in a hole now and we know we're in a hole.
