Türkiye has dispatched 25 trucks carrying humanitarian assistance from its 17th "Ship of Kindness" aid vessel to Gaza through the Rafah border crossing. The shipment, containing over 900 tons of relief supplies including baby formula and ready-to-eat meals, represents Türkiye's ongoing commitment to addressing humanitarian needs in the Gaza Strip.

A convoy of 25 trucks transporting humanitarian aid from Türkiye began its journey Saturday from Egypt's al-Arish Port toward the Rafah border crossing for delivery to Gaza. The assistance forms part of the 900-ton relief supplies carried by Türkiye's 17th "Ship of Kindness" aid vessel, which originally departed from the southern Turkish port of Mersin on October 14.

Aid coordination and composition

The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) coordinated the aid initiative in collaboration with 17 Turkish non-governmental organizations. Officials from AFAD supervised the departure of the truck convoy from the Egyptian port, with the vehicles expected to complete their approximately 45-minute transit to the Rafah crossing point. The shipment contains essential supplies specifically selected to address urgent needs in Gaza, including infant formula, canned food products, and prepared meals.

Logistical operations

Unloading operations continue at al-Arish Port, where more than half of the vessel's 900-ton cargo has already been transferred to transportation vehicles. AFAD confirmed that work continues to prepare the remaining aid materials for subsequent transport to Gaza. The coordinated effort represents one of Türkiye's sustained humanitarian missions to provide relief to the Palestinian population amid ongoing challenges in the region.

Ongoing humanitarian mission

The "Ship of Kindness" initiative demonstrates Türkiye's continued commitment to international humanitarian assistance and represents the latest in a series of Turkish aid deliveries to Gaza. The comprehensive aid package, organized through partnership between government institutions and civil society organizations, aims to alleviate suffering and address basic needs within the besieged territory.

First Lady Emine Erdoğan has declared that the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals represent a vision for an inclusive world where everyone progresses together, emphasizing that realizing this vision depends on all nations accepting their responsibilities. She made these remarks during the ministerial session of the Global Zero Waste Forum in Istanbul, which brought together international participants to discuss sustainable development strategies.

Türkiye's zero-waste leadership

The First Lady described the forum as a significant opportunity to share the zero-waste vision and collaborate on future environmental initiatives. She outlined Türkiye's extensive efforts in building what she characterized as a robust culture of environmental solidarity, involving coordination between state institutions, local governments, private sector entities, and civil society organizations. These coordinated activities have prioritized raising public awareness about sustainable practices across the country.

Women's environmental role

A particularly notable aspect of Türkiye's environmental campaign has been the substantial involvement of women, whom Erdoğan praised for their exceptional support and significant impact on environmental matters. In a separate social media statement about the ministerial session, the First Lady reiterated that Türkiye places high importance on strengthening international cooperation and establishing common objectives to address climate and environmental challenges effectively.

International cooperation vision

Erdoğan expressed optimism that the Istanbul forum would serve as a platform for launching strategic international partnerships based on equitable burden-sharing among nations. She voiced her hope that the gathering would produce substantive outcomes that advance global environmental protection efforts and move the international community closer to achieving the shared sustainable development goals.

Erdogan-Trump meeting could be turning point in improving bilateral relations and regional issues. What matters is that the 2 countries respect each other's interests and concerns and achieve tangible gains through a win-win approach

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump are intensifying their meetings and diplomatic efforts on the sidelines of this year’s UN General Assembly in New York. After a Sept. 23 meeting with Arab and Muslim country leaders on Gaza, the two leaders will meet one-on-one on Sept. 25 to discuss bilateral relations. Since Erdogan's last visit to the White House back in November 2019, the two leaders have met only once, at a NATO summit this June.

Due to the Biden administration's approach to Türkiye, relations between the two countries have been tense over the past four years. Despite shared interests, this period of divergence on regional issues resulted in little more than symbolic engagement. In fact, wars and crises in the region and around Türkiye have limited bilateral relations and led to cautious dialogue.

- Trump's perception of Türkiye

While former President Joe Biden was in office, Türkiye, which chose to remain completely neutral during Trump's campaign to return to the White House, did not comment on the US elections, which are an internal US matter. Even when Trump's chances of winning grew clear, Türkiye did not engage in unethical actions, such as praising Trump or making political investments for the post-election period. For this reason, Trump maintained a balanced approach in his statements about Türkiye.

During his 2024 campaign, Trump openly supported President Erdogan while criticizing the mistakes made by Biden and former President Barack Obama on Türkiye. Despite these comments, it is essential to recall that Trump's first term was marked by numerous crises and challenges. A series of negative events remains fresh in people's minds. However, it appears that Trump weighed the positives and negatives of his first term before deciding to seek a second. In light of this, he did not speak a single negative word about Türkiye or President Erdogan during his campaign for another term. Thus, the Trump-Erdogan meeting is expected to take place in a constructive rather than a confrontational atmosphere.

It is well known that the US lost Arab and Muslim states and the Muslim public due to its support for Israel's aggression. Therefore, Trump may try to take advantage of President Erdogan's appeal to Muslims during the Sept. 25 meeting. So it is likely that the meeting will focus on constructive and concrete steps, particularly in the context of bilateral relations and beyond. These topics can be briefly summarized to outline the key expectations.

- Intent behind shaping Turkish-US relations

Türkiye's growing strategic autonomy, driven by security concerns, is viewed by the US as an "axis shift." Senators who told President Erdogan during his last visit to the White House to "return home (to the West)" instead of to Russia are still remembered. In fact, the White House wants a "controllable" Türkiye. However, such an expectation does not align with Türkiye's actual role and capabilities.

Turkiye has a significant influence in Syria, Libya, Africa, the Balkans, and the South Caucasus. Its ability to engage in dialogue simultaneously with Serbs and Bosnians, Ukraine and Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia, Erbil and Baghdad, as well as Benghazi and Tripoli, is a unique feature. Given these realities, Türkiye expects respect from the US for its interests and awareness of limits. In other words, Türkiye seeks respect for its national policies, which focus on security and prosperity.

- Likely top topics

President Erdogan said his meeting with Trump would focus on trade, investment, the defense industry, and military agreements, as well as regional wars and conflicts, with an emphasis on the vision for peace. However, it is crucial to look beyond these issues to stabilize and "normalize" the fluctuations that relations between the two countries have experienced over the past 30 years.

In the context of trade, the 2024 trade volume of approximately $33 billion reflects a balanced distribution. Despite customs duties and tariffs, both countries reached an import-export level of $16 billion. This volume is likely to rise following a recent presidential decree that reduced Turkish customs duties on American goods. With defense industry purchases on the table, the $100 billion bilateral trade target may be achieved. However, it is worth noting that a balanced trade volume is a crucial criterion for Türkiye at this point. In other words, Türkiye must also be able to sell goods to the US or take part in joint projects. At this point, a return to the F-35 project partnership and the end of unfair practices could open a new chapter in trade between the two countries.

In terms of investment, as of 2024 the US had stock of $15 billion in Türkiye. This January-May, Americans contributed 36% of the total $4.727 billion in investment in Türkiye. Therefore, the US was the leading country investing in Türkiye during the first five months. However, this figure remains insufficient considering the financial sector. Additionally, it is known that Turkish companies have invested $12 billion in the US. Given that the total investment volume is $27 billion, aiming for a total of $100 billion in investments would be advantageous.

The defense industry issue is somewhat complex. The negative influence of the Armenian, Greek, and Zionist lobbies on the Senate, known for opposing Türkiye, has historically brought embargoes and sanctions to the table. Trump needs to assert his authority on this matter and persuade lawmakers. However, senators are setting conditions on arms sales. Trump, meanwhile, has gained a positive image with his pro-Türkiye rhetoric. Notable progress has been made, especially on the purchase of F-16s and passenger aircraft. It appears feasible to acquire the engines required for Turkish jet fighter KAAN in the initial phase. Nonetheless, Trump must leverage his influence on the F-35 issue. Still, it's important to remember that the limited number of F-35s Türkiye plans to procure are a temporary solution until KAAN is fully integrated into the Turkish arsenal.

In the pursuit of peace, mediation and facilitation efforts are prioritized. For Trump, the Russia-Ukraine war, and for Erdogan, the conflict in Gaza are two key issues that need resolution. Azerbaijan and Armenia as well as Syria are topics on which the two leaders have reached agreement. However, it's important to note that when the US and Türkiye engage in constructive dialogue on regional issues, it becomes easier to achieve results.

Another issue that Trump is likely to bring up is Türkiye's relations with Russia and China. Trump, who has often expressed concerns about these two countries, may put forward demands to Türkiye. For Trump, new alliances led by China, like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, represent a worst-case scenario.

Issues concerning Israel present a complex situation. The Israeli government, currently negotiating with Syria, has started to identify Türkiye as a threat. A conflict prevention mechanism set up in Baku, Azerbaijan remains operational. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is likely to pressure Trump and lobby him to turn against Türkiye.

As a result, the Erdogan-Trump meeting could be a turning point in improving bilateral ties and on regional issues. What matters is that the two countries respect each other's interests and concerns and that they achieve tangible, not just symbolic, gains through a win-win approach. Within the framework of Türkiye's policy in recent years, normalization with the US can be achieved.

*The author, a political scientist, is an associate professor at Hasan Kalyoncu University in Gaziantep, Türkiye, and senior researcher at the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), a think tank based in Ankara, the Turkish capital.

Türkiye on Wednesday urged the international community to take “irreversible steps” toward implementing the two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as foreign ministers convened at a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly.

“In Gaza, Israel continues to commit genocide before the eyes of the international community,” said Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yilmaz, citing recent findings from a UN independent commission of inquiry.

“In the West Bank and Jerusalem, illegal settlements, settler violence and provocations at holy sites intensify the crisis. Israel’s reckless threats and assaults across the Middle East, from Syria, Iran, Lebanon to Qatar, are clear proof that the eyes and minds of its leadership are totally sealed with extreme fanaticism.”

Yilmaz stressed two urgent priorities: “An immediate ceasefire with unhindered humanitarian access and irreversible steps towards implementing the two-state solution.”

He warned against Israel’s attempts to dismantle the Palestinian Authority, called for continued support to UNRWA (UN agency for Palestinian refugees), and said Palestine’s full UN membership “should be a high priority.”

- Palestinian prime minister addresses session virtually

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, speaking via video link after being denied a US visa, said the growing number of countries recognizing Palestine was a step forward but stressed that political and financial backing were urgently needed.

“This Israeli government fully rejects Palestinian statehood, and considers that the best way to end such a prospect is to undermine and maybe even seek the collapse of the Palestinian Authority,” he warned.

- Spain pledges €50 million for PA

Spain used the forum to announce fresh financial backing for the Palestinian Authority.

“There is a clear risk of financial collapse of the Palestinian Authority. That’s why Spain is announcing that we will disburse immediately 50 million euros,” Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares declared.

He urged others to review their budgets to help stabilize Palestinian institutions. “The only path, and we know it all, including Israel, towards a just and comprehensive peace, is the implementation of the two-state solution.”

- Attacks against Gaza flotilla raise concern

Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Harris voiced alarm over both the humanitarian crisis and the overnight attacks against the Gaza aid flotilla.

“I'm extremely concerned about developments overnight involving the global flotilla and the welfare and safety of those aboard must be a priority,” he said.

Highlighting international consensus, he added that as many as “142 countries have endorsed the New York Declaration. We now have a strong, action-orientated outcome document. I'm proud that Ireland was a co-chair, along with Türkiye.”

Martin announced that Dublin will host a meeting in the coming months to share lessons from Northern Ireland’s peace process. “No two conflicts are the same … but peace is always, always better than the alternative,” he said.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that “a ceasefire is the only way for unconditional release of all hostages and eventually a permanent end to hostilities.”

- Regional and international backing

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said Riyadh would continue diplomatic and humanitarian work to secure Palestinian borders “based on the 1967 lines and to have security and prosperity for the whole nations of the area.”

Jordan’s Ayman Safadi accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of wanting “a wider war.” “It's high time that we move to action and not content ourselves with words. We should take measures to dissuade the prime minister of Israel from his position.”

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said: “There will be no stability in the area without a permanent solution for the establishment of Palestine.”

Chile’s Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren said the two-state solution is the “only viable path to a just and lasting peace.”

“We stand ready to work with all partners to make this roadmap a reality,” he added.

Emine Erdogan links sustainable traditions to modern challenges, warns against erasure of Palestine’s history

Türkiye’s first lady Emine Erdogan, who also chairs the UN High-Level Advisory Board on Zero Waste, has highlighted Anatolia's centuries-old cultural heritage and urged stronger international action to protect Gaza.

"Life in Anatolia is a roadmap that shows how sustainable development goals can be realized. Because the doors of Anatolia open to a fertility, accumulation, and skill based on thousands of years of experience," said Erdogan as she hosted the spouses of heads of state and government in New York for the 80th UN General Assembly at the Turkish House (Türkevi), as part of The Anatolians project under her auspices.

She and other first ladies from various states and governments toured an exhibition organized by the Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology that showcased Anatolia's millennia-old knowledge, crafts, and cultural heritage combined with modern design.

The exhibition featured around 40 traditional fabrics, handmade carpets, filigree and kazaziye jewelry, ceramic samples, walnut chests, and hand-hammered copperware. Guests passed through themed doors labeled “Cycle,” “Continuity,” “Solidarity,” and “Mastery,” symbolizing Anatolia’s production culture.

- ‘Globalization throws local cultures into a melting pot’

In her speech, Erdogan said she was delighted to welcome guests on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and introduce them to Anatolia’s rich heritage.

"Every culture, every language, every religion comes together to form a magnificent human symphony. Yet globalization throws local cultures into a melting pot, leaving the world increasingly uniform, single-voiced, and single-colored."

She stressed that, while over 7,000 languages exist, half are predicted to disappear by the end of the 21st century. The death of a language, she said, signifies the death of a people’s culture, emotions, and worldviews.

Erdogan underlined that only 18% of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals have been achieved.

"As humanity, we seek a path that is fair, waste-resistant, values labor, embraces nature, and fosters peace. The solution is not far—it lies in our civilization’s roots. The wisdom of Anatolia is a roadmap for sustainable living," she said.

The first lady emphasized that Turkish cuisine itself embodies a zero-waste model and that practices such as ethical production, upcycling, sustainable fashion, natural materials, and supporting women’s labor have been preserved in Anatolia for centuries.

She urged spreading this spirit to war-torn regions like Gaza and Ukraine: "Let’s turn the wisdom of our civilizations into bridges of brotherhood connecting continents."

- ‘We must not allow Israel to erase pre-1945 Palestine’

The Turkish first lady stressed the importance of resisting historical erasure, saying: "We must not allow Israel to erase from our memory Palestine before 1945. On the contrary, we must preserve and teach this ancient history and culture. Against bombs, we must resist with pens, books, and memory."

She warned of Gaza’s humanitarian catastrophe and said: "Do you know, children in Gaza fall asleep so hungry they never wake again? Nearly 19,000 children have been killed in just two years. Gaza has become a graveyard of children and a burial ground for the conscience of humanity."

She once again called on humanity to be Gaza’s voice, open humanitarian corridors, and strengthen international law. She welcomed the decision of many countries to recognize Palestine as a state, calling it “a historic turning point for peace and justice.”

- Anatolia’s traditions ‘embody sustainability and cultural wisdom’

Erdogan said she was “truly delighted” to host world leaders’ spouses at an event in New York showcasing Anatolia’s cultural heritage, sustainable traditions, and craftsmanship.

In a message shared after the program, the Turkish first lady described the exhibition as a celebration of crops grown in Anatolia’s fertile soil, culinary wisdom passed down through generations, and the artistry of master craftsmen.

She said the initiative sought to bring Anatolia’s aesthetic vision, spirit of sustainable production, and reverence for nature to the global stage. Erdogan added that she hopes the gathering will serve as “a bridge between cultures, reinforcing brotherhood and humanity’s shared future.”

‘The more we protect families, the more we can build a just, peaceful and prosperous world,’ says Emine Erdogan at UN event in New York

Türkiye’s first lady and chair of the UN Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste Emine Erdogan on Monday called for the establishment of a dedicated UN body to coordinate global efforts to strengthen the family institution.

“A special body should be created within the United Nations to coordinate studies on empowering the family, because the structure and quality of the family are indicators of the future awaiting humanity,” Erdogan said at an event, titled Better Together: Global Solidarity Rooted in the Family, organized by Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Services during this week’s UN General Assembly in New York.

- ‘Family under siege from all sides’

Addressing participants, Erdogan described the family institution as “the most sacred cornerstone of humanity” and expressed hope that the gathering would inspire global action to protect and support families.

Emphasizing that the family home is where every individual is born into, Erdogan said it serves as a vital shelter that protects people against life’s turbulence, hardships, and crises.

Pointing to mounting threats, she noted: “Climate crisis, wars, popular culture industries and gender-neutral ideologies are deeply shaking the family institution. Values that enrich the human spirit are being replaced with materialist consumption culture. This drags us toward a post-family reality. Once, extended families lived under one roof. Today, the nuclear family has taken its place, and recently, the number of single-parent households has been increasing."

- ‘Family-centered policies no longer a choice but a necessity’

Erdogan underlined the disruptive impact of digitalization on family relationships, warning that children who spend over six hours a day in front of screens are increasingly vulnerable to ideological manipulation and exploitation.

She highlighted rising divorce rates, delayed marriages, and declining birth rates as key concerns, noting: “Modern working conditions fail to support women in motherhood and family roles.”

Citing studies, Erdogan said: “Global fertility dropped from five births per woman in 1950 to 2.3 in 2021, and is expected to decline further to 2.1 by 2050. Our world is aging and becoming lonelier. This is not only a demographic issue but also a question of civilization and sustainability.”

“These developments clearly show that strengthening family-oriented policies is no longer a choice, but a necessity. The fate of societies is directly linked to the strength — or weakness — of the family institution,” she added.

Erdogan also pointed to studies showing a 118% increase in violent crime in cities with higher rates of broken families. In contrast, she said, children raised in stable households grow into “peaceful individuals (who are) sensitive to people, nature, and society.”

“The family is a school that shapes one's personality and instills moral and ethical values. Within the family, as mothers, fathers, siblings, or children, individuals learn compassion, respect, love, and patience. While loneliness makes us fragile, a family environment woven with love and trust nourishes our inner world and enhances our resilience,” Erdogan emphasized.

She also stressed that, similarly, “national identity is developed within the family, and social consciousness is preserved through it,” adding that the sense of belonging to a society, a country, or an ideal is first cultivated in the family. She referred to the family as being the state’s key partner in responsibilities ranging from education to elder care.

The Turkish first lady underlined that the family is not only about living under one roof but about “sharing joy, sorrow, and resilience,” stressing its central role in achieving peace, justice, and prosperity.

- ‘Protecting families is key to a just, prosperous world’

Turning to global crises, Erdogan stressed that the greatest orphan crisis of modern history is unfolding in Gaza.

“Hundreds of families were wiped out before our eyes. Tens of thousands of children (have been) left without parents or a future. In Sudan, Yemen, Myanmar, Ukraine and elsewhere, countless children face war, poverty, and hunger. By the end of 2024, the number of displaced children approached 50 million,” she noted.

She also said these examples show that wars and crises hit families first. “Yet in such times, families are also the source of rebirth, hope, and resilience. The more we protect families, the more we can build a just, peaceful, and prosperous world,” Erdogan added.

The event, hosted at the UN headquarters by Türkiye's Ministry of Family and Social Services, was attended by Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas, Qatar’s Minister of Social Development and Family Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Isata Mahoi, Somalia’s Family Minister Khadija Al-Makhzoumi, Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, Serbian Minister for Gender Equality Tatjana Macura, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Maria Zabolotskaya, and US Department of Health and Human Services Special Advisor Bethany Kozma.

The event concluded with a family photo of participants.

Türkiye's enduring call, rooted in the principle that "the world is bigger than five," transcends a simple criticism of the current global order and embodies a vision for humanity’s collective future, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

His remarks came in an article published in Newsweek on Monday, Türkiye's Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal.

Erdogan said conflicts, lawlessness, terrorism, pandemics, climate crises, and widening injustice and inequality are exerting immense strain on the current international order amid an ongoing row of increasing challenges.

"Türkiye acts with a vision that, without compromising its foreign policy approach centered on the principles of justice, peace, and solidarity, navigates comprehensive, complex, and deeply painful crises while safeguarding both its own security and the shared future of humanity," he stated.

The UN, founded after World War II to preserve peace and security, is now "regrettably" unable to fulfill this core mission amid today’s challenges, the Turkish president highlighted.

The UN Security Council (UN), established on principles of justice and equality, has seen its decision-making on regional and global crises reduced "to the will and interests of merely five countries," he added.

"This unjust structure, which is among the primary sources of the deadlocks of our time," urgently needs reform so the UN can once again function as an effective hub of multilateralism, true to its founding principles, and deliver fair solutions to global challenges, he added.

In the face of the UN’s waning effectiveness and increasingly complex geopolitical challenges, Ankara has made dialogue and mediation the cornerstone of its foreign policy, Erdogan stated, stressing that the Black Sea Grain Initiative exemplifies this commitment, delivering tangible benefits for both regional and global security and stability.

From the Caucasus to Africa and from the Middle East to the Balkans, Türkiye continues to shoulder the responsibility of seeking fair diplomatic solutions to conflicts and working to build a lasting and just peace, he noted.

Ankara's approach to diplomacy extends beyond conflict resolution to encompass humanitarian concerns, he said, noting that the country's standing as one of the world’s foremost providers of humanitarian assistance reflects the responsibility entrusted to it by its "deep-rooted history and values."

In this respect, the president reiterated Türkiye's commitment to its role as a leading force in advancing global solidarity.

- Atrocities in Gaza 'one of the gravest tests of humanity's conscience'

Israel’s ongoing occupation and the atrocities taking place in Gaza stand as "one of the gravest tests of humanity's conscience," said Erdogan.

"This test ends in shame for all of humanity, beginning with the actors of the international system. Children and women perish as millions are left deprived of even the most basic necessities," he stated, expressing Ankara's enduring efforts to achieve a ceasefire, ensure the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, and revive the prospects for a two-state solution.

The over 100,000 tons of aid Türkiye has delivered to Gaza represent just one of the measures it has taken to ease the suffering of "our brothers and sisters struggling with hunger under Israel's inhumane blockade," Erdogan stressed.

The Turkish president called on the global community to adopt "a more determined and sincere stance" amid the sufferings faced by the Palestinians.

"The truth, which we have persistently and courageously advocated, is once again evident: A just peace is achievable only through the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with territorial integrity and East Al-Quds as its capital.

"This is essential for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East," he said.

Reiterating Ankara's call for the countries around the world to "recognize the State of Palestine," Erdogan said recognizing Palestine stands as the strongest response to oppression, occupation, and blockade.

Türkiye congratulates the countries that recently declared their decision to support this cause and expects them to "remain firm in their stance and translate their commitments into concrete steps," he added.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has been carrying out a genocide in Gaza, which has so far killed over 65,300 Palestinians, most of them women and children.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the enclave.

- Recovery, reconstruction of Syria vital for ensuring stability across Middle East

Regarding Syria, Erdogan said the recovery and the reconstruction of the country are vital for ensuring stability across the Middle East, stating that "Syria is another significant country for regional stability."

The interests of the Syrian people must be the primary consideration in all decisions regarding Syria’s future, he stressed, adding that lasting stability and peace can only be reached by respecting the collective will of all Syrians, without granting special privileges to any particular sect or group.

Türkiye remains committed to upholding Syria’s territorial integrity and political unity, as consistently reaffirmed across all platforms, the president further stated.

Ankara rejects any action that ignores the will of the Syrian people or serves as a platform for separatist movements and terrorist groups, Erdogan said.

Lasting solutions to the challenges Syria has faced over the past 14 years require fostering "a stable state and societal order" grounded in cooperative security and collective responsibility, he noted.

Based on its "painful experiences," Türkiye believes that a future grounded in truth, justice, and solidarity can only be achieved through shared will, the president highlighted.

Ankara, fully mindful of this responsibility, will persist in steering humanity toward a just and dignified future, added Erdogan.

Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia last December, ending the Ba'ath Party regime, which had been in power since 1963. A new transitional administration led by al-Sharaa was formed in January.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday hailed the recent decisions by a host of countries, including UN Security Council members, to recognize the state of Palestine as "quite important" and "historic."

Speaking at a UN conference on Palestine, Erdogan extended his congratulations to the countries that decided to recognize the state of Palestine and also voiced hope that these steps will speed up implementation of a two-state solution.

Israel’s massacre in Gaza continues with all its violence, and no one in touch with their conscience can remain silent in the face of such a genocide, he stressed, pointing to how the Palestinian cause today has become a truly global issue.

It is necessary now to declare a ceasefire in Gaza, ensure the unimpeded entry of humanitarian aid, and for Israel to withdraw its forces, Erdogan reiterated.

He also called on the international community to stop Israel's expanded settlements in the West Bank, attempts to force a fait accompli in East Jerusalem, and efforts to spread instability in the region.

The aim of Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu government is to make the establishment of a Palestinian state impossible, and to forcibly displace Palestinians as much as possible, the Turkish president said.

Netanyahu’s government, though coming from a society once victimized by the Holocaust, now commits genocide against neighbors it has shared land and water with for millennia, he added.

The clear goal of Israel's deepening occupation and annexation policies is to kill the vision of a two-state solution and exile Palestinians, stressed Erdogan, adding that this can never be allowed.

'I don’t think we can explain it in any other way. This is completely a genocide,' Recep Tayyip Erdogan tells Fox News

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that Israel is committing a “complete genocide” in Gaza and directly blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the killings.

“I don’t think we can explain it in any other way. This is completely a genocide. And this genocide is caused by Netanyahu. Netanyahu, mercilessly, has unfortunately killed tens of thousands with this genocide,” Erdogan told Fox News on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

He added that over 120,000 people have been wounded in Gaza and that Türkiye has taken many of the injured into the country for treatment.

“We are in complete opposition to this genocide,” he said.

Asked about the Palestinian resistance group Hamas and the hostages it has, Erdogan rejected claims that the blame rests solely with Hamas.

“This is not a crime that is one sided. I think that would be wrong to accuse just Hamas about this. At the same time, how can we put aside what Netanyahu has done?” he said.

He accused Israel of indiscriminate attacks on civilians, adding: “When it comes to weapons, it (Hamas) can't even be compared with Israel, and Israel is using this power without mercy, from age seven to 70, children, women, the elderly. They have no mercy. And these people are being killed.”

On prospects for ending the conflict, Erdogan was skeptical, comparing it to the unresolved Russia-Ukraine war.

“You might remember (US President Donald Trump) said: ‘I will finish the Russia-Ukraine war.’ Did it end? It still goes on. Similarly, he said: ‘I will finish the war in Gaza.’ Did he? No.”

Asked if he sees Hamas as a terrorist group, he rejected the idea.

“I don’t see Hamas as a terrorist organization. On the contrary, I see it as a resistance group…They are using what they have to try to defend themselves.”

Israel has killed more than 64,000 Palestinians in a brutal offensive in Gaza following a cross-border attack by Hamas on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.

-F-35 fighter jets and Turkish-US relations

The Turkish president discussed his upcoming meeting with President Trump at the White House on Thursday, where he said he expects to raise the stalled F-35 fighter jet program.

“We are partners in the F-35 project," he said, adding: “So far, we have paid $1.4 billion...Some aircraft were on the brink of delivery, but at the last minute, the delivery was halted. I don’t think it is very becoming of a strategic partnership,” he said.

Though the US recently approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye, disagreements linger over Ankara’s purchase of Russia’s S-400 air defense system, which led to the country’s removal from the F-35 program and subsequent US sanctions.

President Erdogan said talks at the White House will also cover the delivery of F-16 jets, production, maintenance and broader defense cooperation.

On US-Türkiye economic and industrial ties, he expressed optimism.

“I think it will improve greatly, especially in the defense industry. At the same time, in industry and technology, Türkiye and the United States will improve their relations,” he said.

Regarding the Russia-Ukraine war, President Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s balanced relations with both countries.

“Russia has very serious losses. Ukraine also has very serious losses, both in human terms and financially. We would not have wished this to happen,” he said.

He suggested that NATO could adopt a model similar to Türkiye's approach in engaging both sides diplomatically to reduce tensions.

President Erdogan also criticized Europe’s stance toward Türkiye, noting that despite being a NATO member for over 50 years, the country has not been admitted into the European Union.

“I think it’s unfair,” he said.

Türkiye proudly celebrates establishment of relations with Dominican Republic, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela, Foreign Ministry says

Türkiye on Sunday marked the 75th anniversary of its diplomatic ties with nine Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, hailing the progress made since relations were first established.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said it “proudly” celebrated relations with the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.

Ankara said it is “very pleased” with the level of cooperation achieved so far, stressing that ties reflect Türkiye’s strategy of building broad-based partnerships across the region.

The ministry noted that under the Latin America and Caribbean Action Plan, Türkiye has tripled its diplomatic footprint while trade has increased fifteenfold.

“Bilateral relations have diversified and deepened across a wide spectrum --including diplomatic, political, economic, humanitarian and cultural dimensions -- and our presence in regional organizations has become prominent,” it said, adding that Türkiye would continue to expand cooperation “in the mutual interests and prosperity of our peoples.”

- Expanding presence

Türkiye’s outreach policy toward the LAC region was first set in 1998 and updated in 2006, declared the “Year of Latin America and the Caribbean” in Türkiye. At the time, Ankara had just six embassies in the region. By February 2025, that number had grown to 19 embassies and one consulate general, following the opening of an embassy in Managua, Nicaragua.

As of this year, LAC countries have 18 embassies and eight consulates-general in Türkiye, reflecting deepening ties.

- Diplomatic momentum

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has been at the forefront of Türkiye’s outreach. In 2024, he traveled to Brazil for the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting, visited Venezuela and Mexico, held talks in Ankara with Cuba’s deputy prime minister, and met Panama’s foreign minister during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum. He co-chaired the Türkiye-Venezuela Joint Cooperation Commission in May and hosted Brazil’s foreign minister in June before joining President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November.

In 2025, Fidan hosted his Chilean and El Salvador counterparts in Türkiye and returned to Brazil in July to represent Erdogan at the BRICS Summit.

- Agreements and partnerships

Türkiye has political consultation mechanisms with 19 countries in the region. It has also elevated relations to strategic partnerships with Brazil in 2010, Mexico in 2013 and Colombia in 2022. Agreements include investment promotion and protection deals with seven states, double taxation avoidance agreements with six, and free trade pacts with two. Military framework and defense industry cooperation agreements have also been signed.

- Defense and security

Türkiye maintains military attaches in five LAC countries, strengthening defense cooperation and supporting modernization of local armed forces. In April 2024, defense firm ASELSAN opened its Latin America regional office in Santiago, Chile. Cooperation also covers efforts against drug trafficking and irregular migration.

- Trade and investment

Bilateral trade, worth around $1 billion in the early 2000s, had risen to $15.6 billion by the end of 2024. Türkiye operates trade offices and commercial attaches in 10 LAC countries, while 12 business councils under the Foreign Economic Relations Board work to increase investment.

- Cultural and educational ties

Turkish Airlines now flies to nine destinations in eight LAC countries. Demand for Turkish language and culture continues to rise, supported by the Yunus Emre Institute, the Türkiye Maarif Foundation, and the global reach of Turkish TV series.

Through the Türkiye Scholarships program, 625 students from the region have studied in Türkiye, including 294 currently enrolled. The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) has carried out more than 500 projects in the region through two coordination offices.

Türkiye also contributes to the CARICOM Development Fund, the Organization of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community, the Central American Integration System, and the UN Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, as well as to the OAS mission supporting Colombia’s peace process.

The sole purpose of the Turkish National Technology Move is achieving a fully independent, prosperous Türkiye, the head of the country's premier technology event, TEKNOFEST, said on Wednesday.

Selcuk Bayraktar, speaking at the opening ceremony of TEKNOFEST 2025, stressed that high technology is the key to a bright future in every field, from health care to agriculture and transportation to communications.

The five-day event opened its doors in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul on Wednesday under the organization of the Turkish Technology Team (T3) Foundation and Türkiye’s Industry and Technology Ministry. Anadolu serves as its global communications partner.

Bayraktar said: “At TEKNOFEST, we don't just see brilliant ideas and new inventions. We also see the skilled hands and minds that turn those ideas into steel, code, and products.

"We see tens of thousands of young people who will produce these technologies in factories and develop them in workshops tomorrow."

Every single project in these competitions is a harbinger of the technology companies that will shape tomorrow's world, he added.

He said around 1.1 million people applied for competitions, noting: "This year, we've broadened our horizons even further. With a total of 64 different competitions, 13 of which are new, we're breaking our record as the world's largest technology festival."

- NSosyal

Touching on Türkiye's social media platform NSosyal, he said the TEKNOFEST generation has given its own response to the digital domination; thus, these young people have launched Türkiye's social media platform.

NSosyal is a platform where everyone can freely generate ideas, he said, adding: “NSosyal is a protest against global digital monopolization. NSosyal is where respect, face-to-face politeness, and freedom of expression meet in our digital world.”

He said the TEKNOFEST generation has taken another step forward with the Kure (Globe) Digital Encyclopedia, adding that this step is the result of 1.5 years of meticulous work by the T3 Foundation and KUME Foundation.

Bayraktar emphasized that Kure will be an AI-powered, open-source, reliable reference source where the author of every piece of information is known, adding: “Kure will be a living source of knowledge that you will write and discuss.

"Kure will be the channel of truth against disinformation and manipulation.”

- Babies are slaughtered in Gaza

Bayraktar pointed out that the most ruthless genocide of the modern era is taking place, saying: "Babies, children, innocent people are being slaughtered in Gaza.

"If killing babies is considered legitimate in a place, then there are no longer any moral or legal boundaries there."

He stressed that this situation is an existential threat to all humanity.

Emphasizing that the National Technology Move is not just about making faster rockets and smarter systems, he said: “Our cause is to combine technology with conscience and reason with morality.

"Our cause is to achieve the deterrent power that will say ‘stop’ to this oppression.
