Aysenur Islam expresses her sorrow over the killing of the young woman, during her visit to the family, as protests continue across Turkey on Sunday

Turkey’s Family and Social Policies Minister Aysenur Islam said on Sunday death sentence can be an option for the murderers of a 20-year-old female university student in the southern province of Mersin.

Ozgecan Aslan, 20, was killed and burned after reportedly resisting sexual assault in Mersin's Tarsus district on Friday.

Three suspects were detained on Saturday in connection with the cruel murder of Aslan and they were referred to court for arrest on Sunday.

The security sources said that the three suspects were kept in different custodial prisons during the detention period for security reason.

Hundreds of people gathered across Turkey, including Sanliurfa, Izmir and Trabzon provinces on Sunday to protest the murder.

In addition, on Saturday angry and worried women demonstrated in Istanbul, shouting, "We will put an end to female homicides."

Her funeral was held on Saturday and her coffin was carried by women.

Minister Islam also expressed her deep sorrow over Ozgecan’s killing, during her visit to the family of the young woman in Mersin.

“What Songul and Mehmet Aslan (father and mother of Ozgecan) experienced is the biggest disaster that a family can experience,” she told press members after the visit.

Pointing to death sentence over her killing, she noted: “Not as a minister but as a mother and woman, I think punishment of (this kind of) crimes can be death sentence. (...) We can put it on our agenda."

Separately, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s two daughters Sumeyye Erdogan and Esra Albayrak paid a visit to the family of the young woman to express their condolences.

President Erdogan and his wife Emine phoned Aslan's family on Saturday and condemned the murder. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also called the family, and said that everything would be done to “appropriately punish the murderers in this vicious attack.”

The mother reportedly lies in critical condition in the hospital, after the two-storey building collapsed like a pack of cards on top of the family in southern Turkey

A family of five, including a newly-born baby, sustained injuries, when a two-storey, makeshift building collapsed in the southern province of Mersin late Thursday.

Local residents searched for survivors and rescued all casualties from under the rubble.

A witness saw a huge cloud of dust and smoke filled the street after running outside in a hurry. “People were groaning in pain under the rubble when I walked to the direction the sound was coming,” he said.

Police investigating the incident have identified the injured as members of the same family. People living in nearby properties were asked to stay away from the rubble as a precaution.

Acting on a tip-off, emergency service and fire crew ran to the scene to search for anyone else who might have been trapped in the rubble.

The injured were taken to the Mersin Hospital of Medical Science Faculty by ambulances after first aid was administered on the scene. The medics said one of the injured has remained in critical condition while the remaining four have sustained light injuries.

The neighborhood panicked when a strange piece was removed from the remaining walls.

A leg, that was found trapped under the rubble during the search-end-rescue efforts, was hospitalized immediately.

Rescuers are still digging through the rubble in hopes of rescuing victims who are said to be members of a Syrian family.

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu called Mersin governor Özdemir Çakacak to ask about casualties and how critical the injured were.

Çakacak, who visited the injured at the hospital, said the casualties do not have life-threatening injuries. “A 23-day-old baby is among the injured. He is in the newly-born intensive case unit. His mother went to surgery when she was taken to the hospital,” he said, speaking to reporters.

“The medics said she was conscious before going into surgery, but we will have more clarified information after the operation.”

The governor also said an inquiry is required to determine why the building has collapsed.
