The official warned that the Israeli leader is dragging the region into deeper turmoil.

Türkiye delivered a sharp response on Saturday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directed fresh criticism toward President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. A senior Turkish official stated that Netanyahu lacks any moral standing or legitimacy to lecture anyone, given his documented record of regional aggression.

Netanyahu accused of Gaza genocide and regional wars

Burhanettin Duran, Türkiye’s Communications Director, wrote on the US-based platform X that Netanyahu has orchestrated a genocide in Gaza and launched attacks on seven countries across the region.
Turkish prosecutors have filed a sweeping indictment against Israel’s prime minister and 34 others for a deadly 2025 assault on a Gaza-bound aid ship. The charges include genocide and crimes against humanity, with aggravated life sentences sought.

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu along with 34 other suspects over a military intervention against the Global Sumud Flotilla. The humanitarian convoy was carrying urgent relief supplies to Gaza when Israeli naval forces struck the vessels in international waters last year.

Multiple severe charges filed in indictment

Prosecutors are seeking aggravated life imprisonment for the accused, in addition to prison terms ranging from nearly 1,103 years to over 4,596 years per suspect. The indictment lists offenses such as genocide, crimes against humanity, unlawful detention, torture, property destruction, organized looting, and seizure of transport vessels.

Legal basis rooted in international maritime law

The probe was launched automatically (ex officio) after the attack. Istanbul prosecutors based their jurisdiction on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, alongside Articles 12 and 13 of the Turkish Penal Code and Article 15 of Türkiye’s Criminal Procedure Code.

September 2025 raid on aid convoy

Organizers reported that in September 2025, Israeli forces stopped the flotilla, boarded the ships without warning, detained volunteers, and forcibly relocated them to Israel. The indictment stresses that all actions occurred outside Israeli territorial waters, making the raid a breach of international law. Türkiye has consistently backed legal accountability for those who block humanitarian access to Gaza.

According to a statement from Türkiye’s Communications Directorate, Erdoğan emphasised that Ankara, together with other concerned nations, has exerted “intensive efforts” in the process leading up to the ceasefire.

Call for Full Use of Upcoming Negotiations

Erdoğan stressed that the forthcoming talks between Tehran and Washington should be exploited to their fullest potential to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region. He underlined the critical importance of “not giving opportunity to those who want to sabotage” the peace process and reaffirmed Ankara’s readiness to provide “all possible support in the new phase.” The temporary ceasefire, announced on Tuesday, aims to pave the way for a final agreement to end the war that has caused thousands of casualties since it began on February 28.

First Round of Formal Talks in Islamabad

The first round of formal negotiations between Iran and the United States is expected to take place in Islamabad on Saturday.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim that the two‑week US‑Iran ceasefire represents an important opportunity for durable stability and must not be wasted. Ankara will continue contributing to regional peace efforts, while appreciating Doha’s constructive stance amid escalating turmoil.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a telephone conversation Wednesday with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, focusing on the newly announced Iran ceasefire and the broader regional crisis, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate.

Ceasefire as a strategic window

During the call, Erdoğan stressed that the two‑week pause in hostilities between Washington and Tehran offers “an important opportunity” to achieve lasting peace and stability. He underlined that this window “should not be wasted” and reaffirmed that Türkiye will continue to actively contribute to peace initiatives in the coming period. The Turkish president also conveyed his well‑wishes to the Qatari leader following recent attacks that targeted Qatar, praising Doha’s “constructive stance” throughout the mediation process.

Regional escalation and mediation efforts

The leaders exchanged views on the fragile ceasefire and wider regional developments. Israel has been simultaneously striking Iran since February 28 and has also carried out airstrikes and a ground offensive in southern Lebanon following a cross‑border attack by Hezbollah on March 2, despite a November 2024 ceasefire. After Pakistani mediation, US President Donald Trump announced a two‑week halt to attacks on Iran, saying Tehran had submitted a “workable” 10‑point proposal for negotiations. The announcement came less than two hours before a deadline Trump had repeatedly extended for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and accept a deal or face “the destruction of an entire civilization.”

Türkiye’s proactive diplomacy

Erdoğan’s call with the Qatari emir underscores Ankara’s sustained diplomatic engagement aimed at de‑escalation and regional stability. Türkiye has consistently called for a full implementation of the truce on the ground and offered support for the upcoming talks in Islamabad. The conversation also highlighted the close coordination between Ankara and Doha, two key regional actors working to prevent a wider conflagration and restore dialogue as the primary tool for conflict resolution.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held a telephone conversation Tuesday to review bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments, according to Türkiye’s Communications Directorate. The directorate posted on Turkish social media platform NSosyal that the two leaders discussed cooperation between their countries. Erdogan noted that the solidarity between Türkiye and Spain, particularly in defense and across all fields, has been warmly received by their peoples, and both sides aim to further advance their strategic partnership.

Erdogan warns against Iran’s destruction, urges diplomacy

Commenting on regional tensions, Erdogan stated that Türkiye does not approve of efforts aimed at the “total destruction of Iran,” while also expressing concern over Tehran’s stance toward neighboring countries. He emphasized that “everyone with a conscience should embrace peace and focus on diplomacy.” The Turkish president warned that unless Israel’s actions in Gaza and elsewhere are blocked, “the region will continue to long for peace.” His remarks come as the US-Israeli war on Iran continues to escalate, with more than 1,400 people killed since February 28.

Call to revitalize Russia-Ukraine negotiations

Erdogan also highlighted the importance of renewed diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, stating that it is critical to “revitalize negotiations” and for the international community to approach peace-focused engagement more seriously. Türkiye has consistently mediated between Moscow and Kyiv, hosting direct talks and brokering the Black Sea grain deal. As Europe faces simultaneous conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, Ankara continues to position itself as an indispensable diplomatic actor, urging all parties to prioritize dialogue over military escalation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his British counterpart, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, held a telephone conversation Tuesday to coordinate diplomatic efforts toward ending the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry. The two top diplomats reviewed initiatives aimed at halting hostilities and establishing a sustainable peace in the region. They also discussed the current state of bilateral relations between Türkiye and the UK, reaffirming their commitment to close cooperation.

Diplomatic push amid Trump’s deadline

The call comes at a critical juncture, as US President Donald Trump has given Iran until 8 p.m. Eastern Time Tuesday (0000GMT Wednesday) to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach an agreement, or face attacks on its energy infrastructure. The ultimatum has heightened tensions and underscored the urgent need for diplomatic intervention. Both Fidan and Cooper are understood to share concerns that a military escalation targeting Iranian energy sites could trigger a wider regional war and disrupt global energy supplies.

Rising death toll and Türkiye’s role

Regional tensions have escalated sharply since the US and Israel launched their joint offensive on Iran on February 28, which has killed more than 1,400 people to date, including former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, while also restricting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Türkiye has positioned itself as a key mediator, maintaining communication channels with all parties involved. Ankara continues to urge an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomacy, warning that no military solution exists for the current crisis.

Panel in Ankara assesses future of Türkiye-Iraq relations

Foreign policy and regional experts convened in Ankara for a panel discussing the evolving relationship between Türkiye and Iraq, highlighting growing institutional cooperation, shared security threats, and economic potential. The event, hosted by the SETA think tank, analyzed how both nations are navigating complex regional dynamics.

The future trajectory of Türkiye-Iraq relations was the focus of a recent policy panel in the Turkish capital Ankara, where analysts emphasized a trend toward deeper institutional cooperation and shared security priorities. The discussion, hosted by the Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research (SETA), examined how bilateral ties are evolving amid shifting regional power dynamics and ongoing challenges.

Analysis of political and security cooperation

Experts noted that bilateral relations have gained positive momentum under the government of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, with Ankara prioritizing Iraq's political unity. Analysts pointed out that Türkiye's restrained stance during Iraq's 2019 protests helped build trust. A central theme was the need for the relationship to advance independently of broader regional conflicts. Security collaboration against common threats, particularly the PKK terror group in northern Iraq and the remnants of Daesh, was identified as a critical and enduring area for joint action.

Economic interdependence and regional projects

The economic dimension of the relationship was underscored, with Türkiye standing as Iraq's fourth-largest trading partner. Panelists argued that instability in Iraq would inevitably affect the Turkish economy, making stability a mutual interest. Significant potential was seen in large-scale infrastructure projects like Iraq's proposed "Development Road," a transport and trade corridor that could enhance regional economic integration and connectivity, benefiting both nations.

Navigating regional tensions and external pressures

The discussion acknowledged that Türkiye-Iraq ties operate within a complex and fragile regional environment, influenced by tensions between the U.S. and Iran and the ongoing war in Gaza. Despite these external pressures, experts concluded that both Ankara and Baghdad possess the potential to foster greater regional cooperation. The path forward, they suggested, hinges on continued institutional dialogue, pragmatic management of disputes such as water sharing, and a steadfast focus on common security and economic interests.

The foreign ministers of Türkiye and Saudi Arabia held a phone call to coordinate on the upcoming second phase of a peace plan for Gaza. The high-level discussion also covered ongoing bilateral relations between the two major regional powers.

Türkiye and Saudi Arabia discuss next phase of Gaza peace plan

Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, held a diplomatic discussion on Tuesday focused on advancing peace efforts for Gaza. The conversation centered on the anticipated second phase of a proposed peace plan, according to sources from the Turkish Foreign Ministry.

Coordinating regional diplomacy

The phone call between the two top diplomats underscores the active role both Middle Eastern nations are playing in efforts to resolve the prolonged conflict. While a specific start date has not been announced, the second phase of the Gaza peace initiative is expected to commence in the near future, following an initial phase that began last October. This coordination highlights a shared interest in regional stability.

Bilateral relations on the agenda

In addition to the Gaza situation, the ministers reviewed the current state of Turkish-Saudi relations. This bilateral dimension is significant, reflecting a continued thaw and strengthening partnership between Ankara and Riyadh following a period of diplomatic tensions in previous years. Enhanced cooperation between these powers could shape broader economic and political dynamics in the Middle East.

Context of ongoing conflict

The discussion occurs against the backdrop of an ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Türkiye, under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has positioned itself as a vocal advocate for Palestinian rights, while Saudi Arabia is a key Arab leader with considerable influence. Their joint diplomatic engagement signals a regional approach to conflict resolution, potentially offering an alternative to stalled international mediation efforts.

Presidents Erdogan and Macron held a phone conversation focused on the war in Ukraine, with the Turkish leader reiterating Ankara's readiness to revive the Istanbul peace process. They also discussed bilateral ties and other regional flashpoints.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and French President Emmanuel Macron held a comprehensive phone call on Wednesday, centering their discussions on efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine and addressing a range of pressing global and regional issues. The conversation, initiated by the French leader, underscored the importance of high-level diplomatic coordination between Ankara and Paris on matters of international security.

Türkiye's Active Mediation Role in Ukraine

President Erdogan emphasized that Türkiye is exerting "maximum efforts" to help end the Russia-Ukraine war through a "just and lasting peace." He informed Macron that contacts with both sides to revive the Istanbul peace process are actively ongoing and that Türkiye stands ready to "make every possible effort" to facilitate a diplomatic breakthrough at the earliest opportunity. Erdogan stressed the need to use diplomatic channels effectively to achieve a sustainable ceasefire and lasting stability, warning against steps that could further endanger global peace.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Regional Coordination

Beyond Ukraine, the two leaders discussed the importance of advancing bilateral cooperation between Türkiye and France, agreeing to continue taking concrete steps toward this goal. They also exchanged views on the latest developments in other volatile regions, including the ongoing crises in Gaza and Syria, as well as the situation in the Caucasus. This broad agenda highlights the multifaceted nature of the Türkiye-France strategic dialogue, which spans conflict resolution, security, and regional stability.

Context of Türkiye's Balanced Diplomacy

The call reflects Türkiye's persistent and uniquely positioned diplomatic strategy. By maintaining open channels with both Moscow and Kyiv, Ankara has carved out a critical role as a potential mediator and facilitator of dialogue, exemplified by the historic grain deal and prisoner exchanges. Engaging with a major European power like France aligns with Türkiye's aim to ensure its diplomatic initiatives are supported and coordinated within broader Western frameworks, while also advancing its own strategic interests and regional influence.

In a major international address, Türkiye's First Lady Emine Erdogan warned of a looming "post-family era" driven by falling birthrates and aging populations. She called for a new global vision with families at the center of social policy, outlining Türkiye's own comprehensive family support initiatives as a model.

Türkiye's First Lady, Emine Erdogan, has issued a compelling call for the international community to forge a new global vision aimed at strengthening the family institution. In a video address to the "Growing Europe 2025" summit, she cautioned that declining birth rates and aging populations are steering societies toward a critical juncture, threatening their very foundations.

A Global Demographic Challenge

Citing stark global demographic data, Erdogan highlighted that the average fertility rate has fallen to 2.2 children per woman, with more than half of all nations now below population replacement levels. She projected that by 2030, one in six people will be over 60, creating immense pressure on economies and social security systems. "A world that cannot renew itself is inevitably dragged into a major impasse," she stated, framing each birth as vital for the world's future.

Türkiye's Proactive Policy Response

In response to these challenges, Erdogan detailed Türkiye's robust national strategy, which includes designating 2025 as the "Year of the Family" and the following decade as the "Decade of Family and Population." She outlined concrete measures such as state-backed housing and marriage loans, extended parental leave, childcare support, and flexible work arrangements designed to alleviate the conflict between professional and family responsibilities.

Critique of Modern Cultural Trends

The First Lady also critiqued contemporary cultural narratives that she argues undermine family life. She expressed concern that modern culture often promotes extreme individualism at the expense of familial bonds, portraying family as an obstacle to personal ambition. She expressed hope that the summit would galvanize stronger, family-centered policy commitments worldwide, asserting that "the steps we take to place the family at the center will bring new breath to an aging and increasingly lonely world."

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has announced that Türkiye stands ready to serve as a de facto guarantor power should a two-state solution be implemented for Palestine. Describing this as a "major commitment" requiring significant responsibility, Fidan emphasized Türkiye's willingness to ensure any peace agreement acceptable to Palestinians is properly implemented.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has declared that Türkiye is prepared to assume the role of de facto guarantor should a two-state solution be established between Palestine and Israel. During a television appearance Saturday, Fidan characterized this potential commitment as representing a substantial responsibility that not every nation would be equipped to undertake in the complex Middle Eastern peace process.

Guarantor commitment details

Fidan specified that Türkiye's guarantor role would be contingent upon the implementation of a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, providing Palestinians with a sovereign and equal state. He emphasized that expecting "full trust" in Israel was unrealistic in the current circumstances, instead highlighting the necessity of maintaining international pressure to ensure accountability from all parties involved in the conflict resolution process.

Current mediation efforts

The foreign minister noted that Türkiye has consistently acted as a mediator in efforts to conclude the Gaza conflict, leveraging its diplomatic relationships and historical support for Palestinian causes to advance peace initiatives. He revealed that an "early task force" has already been established to address operational challenges during the current ceasefire process, including complications related to hostage and remains exchanges between the conflicting parties.

Institutional Framework Development

Fidan indicated that discussions continue regarding three institutional mechanisms outlined in the US-proposed ceasefire framework: a task force, peace council, and stabilization force. While these structures remain under negotiation, Türkiye's existing defense and intelligence coordination efforts demonstrate the country's capacity to accept expanded responsibilities should comprehensive peace be achieved in the region.

‘Human history has not witnessed such savagery in the last century’ to equal Israel's genocide, says Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Addressing the UN General Assembly, the Turkish president on Tuesday urged “all world leaders to stand firmly with oppressed Palestinians today in the name of humanity.”

“Here, I sincerely appeal to all heads of state and government. Today is the day. Today is the day to stand upright by the oppressed Palestinians in the name of humanity. While your people react against the barbarism in Gaza, have the courage to follow through,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Today, we are also here at this podium to speak on behalf of Palestinian people, whose voices are being silenced, together with our own citizens,” said Erdogan.

Erdogan thanked all countries that have recognized Palestine so far, and called on the states that have not yet done so “to act without delay.”

Erdogan said that for 23 months, Israel has killed one child every hour in Gaza, stressing: “These are not numbers, but innocent people.”

“Every day, 2.5 million Gazans living within 365 square kilometers (141 square miles) are displaced, forced to move to another area,” said Erdogan.

“Innocent little children, only 2 or 3 years old, without hands, arms, or legs, sadly became an ordinary image of Gaza today,” the Turkish president said.

Holding up a photo of a child on the brink of starvation, Erdogan asked: “What conscience can endure, what conscience can remain silent on this? Can there be peace in the world where children die from hunger, lack of medicine?”

“Here, in America, in Europe, everywhere in the world, if a small thorn pricks a child's hand, parents' hearts hurt deeply; but in Gaza, children's hands, arms, and legs have to be amputated without anesthesia. Let us be clear: This is the lowest point of humanity. Human history has not witnessed such savagery in the last century. Everything is unfolding right before our eyes. The genocide in Gaza is being broadcast live at any moment through the media and social media.”

- Occupation under ‘pretext’

In fact "there is no war in Gaza," he said, as the Israeli army is using the most modern, deadliest weapons against innocent civilians.

Erdogan said Israel’s occupation under the pretext of the events of Oct. 7, 2023 is not counterterrorism, it is “a policy of deportation, exile, genocide, and mass slaughter.”

“Israel is not limiting itself to Gaza and West Bank; by carrying out attacks on Syria, Iran, Yemen, and Lebanon, it is also threatening regional peace,” he added.

The Turkish leader said Israel “completely lost control” after its attack on Qatar earlier this month, proving that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “has no intention of (seeking) peace or freeing hostages.”

He said Israeli attacks have pushed aside basic human, women's, and children's rights, and freedom of expression, protest, equality, and justice

Obsessed with what it calls the “promised land,” the Israeli administration is undermining regional peace and humanity's common achievements with its expansionist policy, said Erdogan.

“In Gaza, a ceasefire should be reached immediately, attacks should stop, and unhindered access to humanitarian aid must absolutely be allowed,” he implored.

Those behind the genocide must be held accountable under international law, which “will certainly happen,” Erdogan said. “Those who don’t raise their voice and don’t take a stance against the barbarism in Gaza are complicit in this savagery.”

In his speech, Erdogan drew global attention to Israel’s actions in Gaza, presenting photographs captured by Anadolu as evidence of Israel's ongoing genocide.

While in New York for the 80th UN General Assembly, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave an interview to Fox News, making significant remarks on international politics.

In an appearance on Bret Baier’s program, Erdoğan addressed Türkiye’s policies on Gaza and the war in Ukraine. Asked whether he considered what is happening in Gaza a genocide, Erdoğan replied: “There is no other way to describe it. This is a full-fledged genocide. Netanyahu is the perpetrator of this genocide.”

Erdoğan added: “Netanyahu has brutally massacred tens of thousands in this genocide. As Turkey, we are completely against it.” He also noted that more than 125,000 people have been wounded in Gaza and that many of them have been brought to Türkiye for treatment.

On the issue of hostages held by Hamas, Erdoğan argued it was wrong to place the entire responsibility on Hamas, stating: “How can we set aside what Netanyahu has done?” He showed photographs in his speeches illustrating the destruction in Gaza and emphasized that Israel, not Hamas, possessed overwhelming military power, using weapons “indiscriminately against women, children and the elderly.”

When asked about ending the humanitarian crisis, Erdoğan recalled former U.S. President Donald Trump’s claims that he could end both the Russia-Ukraine and Gaza wars, remarking: “Did they end? No.”

Erdoğan said he does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization but rather a “resistance movement.”

Turning to U.S.-Türkiye relations, Erdoğan was asked about his upcoming meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House, where the F-35 issue is expected to be raised. He recalled that Türkiye had been a partner in the F-35 program, paying $1.4 billion but never receiving the aircraft, calling this step “not befitting a strategic partnership.”

“We will discuss these issues again,” Erdoğan said, adding that both the F-35 and F-16 programs, as well as defense industry cooperation, would be on the agenda. He expressed optimism about the growth of U.S.-Türkiye trade, particularly in defense, industry, and technology.

On Russia and Ukraine, Erdoğan underlined Türkiye’s strong ties with both countries and said: “We never desired this war. It has brought heavy losses to both Russia and Ukraine, and I do not believe it will end soon.” He suggested NATO should pursue a model similar to Türkiye’s approach, engaging with both sides in pursuit of peace.

Erdoğan also highlighted the economic strain on Ukraine, noting that Europe cannot provide indefinite financial aid and that U.S. support remains uncertain. He criticized the EU for excluding Türkiye for more than 50 years despite its NATO membership, calling the policy unfair.

Sudan - At the edge of a Libyan collapse

The start of a civil war caused by tension between RSF and Armed Forces of Sudan on April 15,2023, has led to the death of more than 150.000 people, displacement of nearly 12 million people, which the United Nations has called “the worlds largest humanitarian crisis”.

The civil war represents the latest chapter in a series of clashes and instability following the longtime president Omar Al-Bashir’s fall from power in 2019.

Widespread protests erupted against his almost three decades in power, leading the military to stage a coup against him.

A joint military-civilian government was then established only to be ousted in October 2021 through another coup. There were two names responsible for that coup: Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan- Head of the Armed forces and Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo- leader of a Paramilitary authority RSF. (RSF-Rapid Support Forces)

In July, the RSF appointed a prime minister along with a presidential council — a step the military-backed government denounced as a “phantom government,” accusing the group of “ignoring the hardships of the Sudanese people.”

Now the Chairman of the African Union Commission Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expresses concern that Sudan may face a Libya-style collapse, as the struggle between two competing governments drags the country closer to chaos and prolonged instability.

“We had that concern from the very beginning. We didn't want to have a dislocated country, where we see in many parts emerging governments while the central government is still there,” Mr Youssouf told The National in an interview in Abu Dhabi.

Since the overthrow of longtime ruler Muammer Qaddafi in 2011, Libya has remained fractured, with rival administrations and armed groups struggling for dominance. At present, authority is split between the UN-recognized Government of National Unity in Tripoli—headed by Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh and Presidential Council leader Mohamed Al Menfi—and the eastern-based Government of National Stability, backed by the House of Representatives and militarily controlled by Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army.

This has caused parallel administrations to overlap claims to legitimacy and constant military control over territory, leaving the country devastated.

“We didn't want to see the Libyan scenario repeat itself in Sudan. The African Union position was very clear. We need to continue to work with the Sovereign Council under the presidency of Gen Abdel Fattah Al Burhan and try to bring on board all other forces in a kind of inclusive Sudanese-led dialogue,” said Mr Youssouf.

In the context of an international engagement, at the invitation of the United States, Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the United States, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have gathered to discuss extensive consultations on the conflict in Sudan. The latest peace initiative proposed a three-month ceasefire as a first step, to be followed by the restoration of civilian governance.

The four nations announced that they had reached a “common framework of principles” to resolve the conflict. Sudan’s army-backed government, however, rejected the proposal, insisting that only the Sudanese people should determine the country’s future and refusing to be sidelined in shaping the postwar transition.

Recent incidents and developments on Israel's Gaza war have shown that the US may not wield as much influence over Israel’s policies as commonly believed, and the reality could even be the opposite, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Thursday.

“As you know, there has been a long-standing reality in American domestic politics regarding who controls and manages whom. Recent events have shown that the US does not have as much influence over Israel’s policies as assumed; it may even be the opposite,” Fidan said, commenting on discussions continuing with US President Donald Trump regarding peace in Gaza and stability in Syria.

Stressing that Israel has always been a problem for the region since it seized Palestinian lands, Fidan said all regional countries support the two-state solution based on 1967 borders.

“However, Israel has never genuinely wanted a two-state solution. It has consistently pursued a policy of seizing Palestinian lands beyond the 1967 borders, using security as an excuse,” Fidan said in an interview with MBC MASR TV channel.

“At this point, this has been the biggest problem for the Islamic world for decades. In recent years, Israeli expansionism has become an official threat to the region, besides the ongoing oppression in Palestine,” he added.

Underlining the importance of the emergency Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, Fidan said the meeting highlighted Israel’s expansionism.

“We will continue to oppose and work against the ongoing genocide in Gaza and Israel’s attempts to annex the West Bank, and we will strive for the realization of a Palestinian state. This is indispensable for regional peace,” he added.

The foreign minister urged Israel’s expansionist policies to be addressed by regional countries, and the global community, calling for appropriate measures in this regard.

“This is extremely important. It is neither good for Israel, nor for the countries of the region. Unfortunately, Israel draws its security from the political and economic weaknesses and technological backwardness of countries close to it,” he added.

“For instance, its occupation in Lebanon, its presence in Syria, attacks against Iran, the continuous targeting of civilian areas in Yemen, systematic destruction of infrastructure, and most recently, the attack on Qatar.”

Fidan said the recent Israeli attack on Hamas leadership in Doha “has changed many things, while mediation efforts are ongoing.”

Pointing out the international actors' failure on resolving Israel's genocide in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine war and other conflicts, Fidan said the current system shows tendency to "fuel crises rather than provide solutions."

Fidan said blocs, alliances and global bodies, particularly the EU and the UN, often fall short in addressing global problems.

"The structure of the UN, particularly the Security Council, seems inadequate in solving these issues. Reform of the Security Council and the UN as a whole is necessary," Fidan said, calling for more inclusive and participatory decision-making mechanism to be implemented.

"If such reforms do not happen, as you mentioned, it is inevitable that alternative regional actors will emerge -- such as BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, ASEAN, and many others not listed here -- seeking different approaches."

- Arab, Islamic countries can unite on regional security

Fidan argued that many Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Arab League members have matured politically to the point that they could form “an integrated political system.”

If the political leaderships of those countries decide, it is possible to reach such a vision within a certain systematic framework, according to Fidan.

He emphasized that in the region, including Türkiye, countries must commit to each other’s security, territorial integrity and sovereignty. “All countries must trust each other. There needs to be a platform that makes this possible. Then, many economic and security issues can be built upon this.”

Fidan noted in the region, there has always been talk of Turkish, Arab or Persian domination. “I believe this is a primitive approach. What we need is cooperation, not domination. Not ruling, but working together. Everyone’s borders are clear. Nations are clear. We respect each other.”

- ‘Best level in modern history’ with Egypt

Fidan highlighted Türkiye’s improving relations with Egypt, calling it “the best level in modern history.”

He said while ties between the peoples of both countries have always been strong, relations between political elites and governments have recently reached a new high, enabling dialogue on all issues.

Pointing to the strong solidarity and between the two countries, Fidan said the relationship is steadily advancing and trade ties are “exceptionally good.”

He emphasized that cooperation between Ankara and Cairo should be advanced through professional efforts in all areas, “But I want to stress this: We need to work professionally and work hard. There is political intent and will.”

Fidan said Türkiye is advancing its trade and political relations with Egypt and Saudi Arabia, stressing the importance of cooperation in the defense industry due to recent incidents in the region.

"But at this point, there is a reality we face: the threats in the region are now pushing us to talk more about security and, frankly, to cooperate on this matter. We especially need to cooperate in the defense industry. And we also need to talk more about our common security issues,” he said.

Underscoring Türkiye's ongoing cooperation with Saudi Arabia in the defense industry, Fidan said discussions with Egypt is continuing in that regard.

"But especially with Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Türkiye really needs to put the issue of common security on the table with regional countries, just as much as we do with matters of economy, trade, and technology," he added.

Türkiye is closely monitoring the reports that the Greek Cypriot Administration procured an air defense system from Israel, the Turkish Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

“We would like to once again remind that the GCA’s ongoing armament efforts and activities that may undermine peace and stability on the island could have dangerous consequences,” said the Defense Ministry sources at a weekly press briefing in Ankara.

“Every attempt aimed at disturbing the balance on the island is being closely monitored, and all necessary measures are being taken for the security and peace of the TRNC (the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus),” sources said.

“Türkiye, as in the past, stands today as well by the TRNC and supports it.
China Embassy in Tel Aviv says Israel needs 'political wisdom,' not just military operations and endless bombardment of Gaza

China on Thursday rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's accusations of an "information blockade" against Israel, warning that such claims harm bilateral relations.

Netanyahu's claims are completely false and harmful to China-Israel relations, and Beijing is deeply concerned and strongly opposed to them, the state-run Global Times reported, citing a statement issued by the Chinese Embassy in Israel.

"China is shocked by the remarks made by the Israeli leader," said the embassy spokesperson in a statement.

The reaction came after Netanyahu recently accused some countries, including China, of investing in artificial intelligence technologies and using social media to launch an "information blockade" on Israel.

The embassy said criticism on social media platforms should not be attributed to China, noting that the international community has been united in calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza to end the fighting and secure the release of hostages.

"Israel needs political wisdom and creative diplomacy, not simply military operations and endless bombardment," it said.

The embassy urged Israel to heed international calls, halt its military campaign in Gaza, and agree to a comprehensive ceasefire to avert a deeper humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli army has killed over 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of diseases.

Bloc unveils plans to downgrade trade ties with Israel, sanction top officials, marking major shift in approach to Tel Aviv

European leaders welcomed measures proposed Wednesday by the European Commission against Israel.

"I welcome the European Commission’s proposals on the suspension of certain trade provisions of the Association Agreement with Israel, and on sanctions against extremist ministers and violent settlers, as well as against Hamas. It is now for member states to decide," European Council President Antonio Costa wrote on the US social media company X’s platform.

He stressed that the measures are not aimed at the Israeli people but rather aim to show that Europe "cannot accept the actions of the Israeli government in Gaza and the West Bank."

Costa noted that Tel Aviv's actions have gone "far beyond" its legitimate right to self-defense.

"The situation in Gaza is catastrophic and unacceptable. An immediate ceasefire is urgent. Full humanitarian access must be re-established. The hostages have to be released unconditionally," he added.

Ireland's Foreign Minister Simon Harris also welcomed the proposal as "hugely significant," pointing to the "genocide taking place in Gaza" and reiterating the urgent need for action.

"Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians, as confirmed yesterday by an independent UN investigative commission. Europe must act now!" Slovenia's Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon wrote on X, expressing support for the proposals.

Stressing that Sweden has long called on the EU to offer "concrete proposals" to put pressure on the Israeli government, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard also welcomed the Commission's announcement.

"Sweden cannot solve the Middle East conflicts alone, but by pushing forward and working together with other EU member states to achieve joint decisions, we can truly make a difference. An immediate ceasefire and a lasting end to hostilities are needed, all remaining hostages must be released, and the suffering in Gaza must come to an end," she said on X.

EU Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib stressed that the Commission is now "stepping up action" and urged others to do the same.

"Now time for others to also step up and defend International Humanitarian Law. This is EVERYONE’S duty," Lahbib said on X.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas unveiled plans Wednesday to downgrade trade ties with Israel and sanction top officials over findings of human rights abuses in Gaza, marking a major shift in the bloc’s approach to Tel Aviv.

Maros Sefcovic, European commissioner for trade and economic security, said the proposal targets key provisions of the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement, including the free movement of goods, services, public procurement, competition and intellectual property.

"In practice, this means that imports from Israel to the EU will lose the preferential access to the EU market, and that these goods will be charged duties at the level applied to any other third countries with whom the EU has no free trade agreement," he told a press conference in Brussels.

The commission also announced sanctions on the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, extremist Cabinet ministers of the Israeli government and violent settlers. The European Council now needs to approve the decision unanimously.

Palestinian Prisoners Society says use of electroshock devices, plastic bullets, as well as disease outbreaks spreading in Israeli jails such as Negev and Ofer, leaving thousands in worsening conditions

The Palestinian Prisoners Society reported on Wednesday an increase in the use of electroshock devices and plastic bullets against Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, as well as outbreaks of scabies in the Negev and Ofer prisons.

In a statement, the society said its lawyers visited dozens of prisoners, including women and children, in seven different Israeli prisons throughout September.

Testimonies from detainees revealed that the Israeli prison system continues to commit systematic inhumane treatment and acts of brutality that can be classified as crimes, the statement noted.

The society stressed that repression tactics inside the prisons have escalated, particularly through the increased use of electroshock and plastic bullets. It also emphasized that scabies has spread widely in Negev and Ofer prisons.

According to prisoners’ accounts, detention conditions remain unchanged with no signs of improvement. They said the lack of adequate food leaves them in a state of constant hunger, while they are also deprived of basic necessities.

The statement underscored that Negev prison, one of the largest facilities where thousands of detainees are held, has become a center of repression, torture, and assaults since the start of the war in Gaza.

The prison has also turned into a hotspot for the spread of diseases and epidemics, which has led to the deaths of many detainees, it added.

Prisoners further reported severe shortages of clothing, with some saying they have been unable to change their clothes for six months.

The statement also highlighted testimonies from female detainees in Damon prison, who described suffering from repression, strip searches, beatings, and denial of their special needs.

“The crimes being committed have reached a level that can no longer be described in words,” the society declared, calling on the international community to take urgent action.

More than 11,100 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons are facing torture, hunger, and health crises, according to the statement.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have killed more than 65,000 Palestinians.

Britain will formally recognize a Palestinian state this weekend after US President Donald Trump concludes his state visit, The i Paper reported Wednesday, citing government sources.

In July, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK will recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly in New York in September unless Israel takes "substantive steps" to address the humanitarian situation in Gaza and agree to a ceasefire.

The reason for delaying the announcement until after Trump departs from the UK is because it “could have risked deepening tensions with Washington, after Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio offered strong backing for Israel’s ground offensive in Gaza,” the report said.

The prime minister’s spokesman said the recognition was designed to protect the viability of a two-state solution.

"Statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people, and it is absolutely critical in protecting the viability of a two-state solution that we make clear that inalienable right," he added.

Last year, Ireland, Norway and Spain joined a list of 147 countries that now officially recognize Palestine.

France also announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly, becoming the first member state of the G7, an informal forum of the seven leading industrialized nations and democracies, to do so.

Negotiations between Beijing and Washington for US President Donald Trump's state visit to China are in the "final stage," the South China Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

The claim comes shortly after the fourth round of trade talks between the two countries in Spain and before Trump's phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday.

Earlier, Trump and Xi spoke on the phone on June 5.

Trump reportedly described the talks in Madrid as a success, with Washington and Beijing reaching a tentative agreement on the future of TikTok's US operations.

According to the report, the two sides also discussed other issues, including critical minerals and fentanyl.

If Trump’s potential visit to China takes place, it will mark the first visit by an American president to the Asian country since 2017.

The report cited sources familiar with the trade negotiations, saying “significant progress” has been made and both sides are finalizing the details.

“There are a few small loose ends. But the major blocks are already resolved. Things are taking shape,” one source told the Post.

Beijing reportedly sent a formal state visit invitation to Trump in the first week of September, which the report suggested as indicating that a state visit is “more or less confirmed” and that planning is in a “very advanced stage.”

“There is strong political will from both sides to make it happen. Both sides want to present this major diplomatic event as a big win for their domestic audiences,” a source told the Post.

The sources mentioned that the visit would likely be expected “around the APEC summit,” which will be held in South Korea from October 31 to November 1.

The US and China have maintained full diplomatic relations since January 1979.

The total volume of the goods trade between the two nations amounted to $582.0 billion in 2024, according to data from the US government.

'This blessed city has witnessed the downfall of many arrogant figures who claimed it belonged only to them,' Burhanettin Duran says at 'Gaza: The Litmus Test of Humanity' panel hosted by Directorate of Communications in Ankara

Türkiye’s Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said on Wednesday that those who seized Jerusalem by force, oppressed its people, and attacked its mosques and churches have always been condemned throughout history.

“This blessed city has witnessed the downfall of many arrogant figures who claimed it belonged only to them,” Duran said during the “Gaza: The Litmus Test of Humanity” panel hosted by the Directorate of Communications in Ankara.

In his opening remarks, Duran said Israel has been occupying and oppressing Palestinian territories for decades, violating international law and humanitarian values while committing "wholesale massacres."

By “turning Palestinian babies’ cradles into coffins,” he said, Israel has tested all of humanity while also threatening regional peace with attacks on neighboring countries.

“With its genocidal policies and expansionism, Israel has become a threat to regional and global peace. The international community must now act,” Duran said.

The Israeli army has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave uninhabitable and led to starvation and the spread of diseases.

On Tuesday, the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory confirmed that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.

- Türkiye’s humanitarian and diplomatic efforts

Duran also highlighted Türkiye’s aid efforts, noting that more than 100,000 tons of humanitarian supplies and over $40 million in support to UNRWA have been delivered despite Israeli restrictions.

He added that Türkiye has pushed for a permanent ceasefire, urgent humanitarian access, and recognition of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

- Media and information war

Duran praised Turkish media, including Anadolu, for exposing Israeli disinformation and bringing Gaza’s reality to global attention despite threats and obstruction on the ground.

“Anadolu has produced nearly 144,000 reports in 13 languages from the region. Along with the books, The Witness and The Evidence, it has published more than 200,000 photos and nearly 15,000 videos—material shared with the public and submitted as evidence before international courts,” he said.

By contrast, he accused Western media of biased coverage and noted that Israel deploys “lies, disinformation, and algorithmic censorship” to suppress the truth about its actions in Gaza.

Chancellor Merz accuses Putin of trying to destabilize Europe, says European allies will strengthen defense to deter Russia

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Wednesday accused Russia of deliberate attempts to destabilize Europe, most recently by drone incursions into NATO allies Poland and Romania.

"Russian President Putin has long been testing boundaries. He sabotages, spies, murders, and deliberately sows uncertainty," Merz said during a budget debate in parliament. "Russia aims to destabilize our societies, but we will prevent this from happening, both externally and internally," he added.

Responding to criticism from opposition parties on Ukraine policy, Merz said his government is supporting efforts to end the war but will not support a "dictated peace" at the expense of Ukraine’s will.

“Ending it at the expense of Ukraine's political sovereignty and territorial integrity is out of the question,” the conservative leader stressed. “A capitulation would only encourage Putin to seek his next target. We have seen how concrete this can become with the violation of Polish and Romanian airspace in recent days,” he said.

Merz noted that Germany and its European allies will strengthen their defense capabilities to deter further Russian aggression.

'I think it’s time for the Danish government to get its finger out, to say it in good Danish, and recognize Palestine as a state and recognize the Palestinians’ right to live,' says Danish Social Liberal Party leader

Danish opposition parties have urged the government to take tougher measures against Israel, including recognizing the Palestinian state, following Israel's latest offensive into Gaza City and a UN report confirming Israeli forces committed genocide.

Martin Lidegaard, leader of the Danish Social Liberal Party, said Copenhagen should act decisively, Danish broadcaster DR reported on Tuesday.

“I think it’s time for the Danish government to get its finger out, to say it in good Danish, and recognize Palestine as a state and recognize the Palestinians’ right to live,” he said.

The same call was echoed by the Unity List’s foreign affairs spokesperson, Trine Pertou Mach, who described the government’s response as a “stain on our history,” and by the leader of the Alternative party, Franciska Rosenkilde.

She urged Denmark to “stop the sale of weapons components for the F-35 aircraft that contribute to the genocide” and push for tougher trade restrictions on Israel.

Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen acknowledged the gravity of the situation in Gaza, saying Israel must exercise restraint.

“Israel must hold back. We must have a ceasefire; we must have humanitarian aid unhindered into Gaza. That is the Danish position, and it is only being sharpened by what we see,” he said.

Lokke said Denmark is pushing within the EU for concrete measures, including suspending the trade section of the EU-Israel association agreement, restricting Israel’s access to the Horizon research program, and sanctioning extremist ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

However, he rejected the idea that Denmark was now closer to formally recognizing Palestine. “It is largely a matter of timing -- and it must happen in cooperation with other countries,” he said.

The calls in Denmark came after an independent UN commission concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, a claim Israel’s Foreign Ministry has dismissed as “false.”

The International Court of Justice will make the final legal determination, though its proceedings remain ongoing.

Despite differing views on recognition, both the opposition and the government agreed that international pressure on Israel must increase, with Lokke stressing that “it is in Israel’s own interest that there also be a Palestinian state.”

The Israeli army has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023.

Nearly one million Palestinians, most of them displaced from other parts of the Gaza Strip, remain trapped in Gaza City under relentless attacks.

Russian foreign minister and US Secretary of State may meet on sidelines of UN General Assembly, says Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Tuesday that while Moscow and Washington may hold talks on bilateral relations before the end of autumn, a trilateral summit including Ukraine is unlikely.

Speaking in an interview with the Russian state news agency Tass, Ryabkov said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio may meet on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York City, which opened on Sept. 9.

The organization of the meeting “is in the process of discussion. I think the chances (for it to happen) are high," he said.

As for a meeting with Ukraine, Kyiv has not yet responded to a Russian proposal made during the third round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Istanbul on July 23, he added.

Regarding a potential fourth round of bilateral consultations aimed at resolving diplomatic irritants between Russia and the US, Ryabkov disclosed that the meeting has been postponed multiple times.

He clarified that the delays were not merely logistical but strategic, as Moscow seeks substantive progress rather than "stomping on the spot." He emphasized that with political will, groundwork could be laid behind the scenes for future steps.

"If we talk about some time frames, we aim to try to hold such an event at least by the end of autumn," he said.

Commenting on the US approach to Ukraine, Ryabkov said not everything about American ideas suits Moscow, but generally it sees it as based on "common sense."

Meanwhile, opponents of the Trump administration "are pressing with all their might a reverse gear" in an attempt "to bring Russia to its knees," he said.

According to Ryabkov, a group of “rabid militarists” and those unable to accept the harsh reality that “victory over a nuclear power is fundamentally impossible” are "unfortunately drowning out voices making sounder assessments."

"I would like this paranoid white noise created by the European group not to overshadow the common sense that continues to be heard in Washington," he added.

Commenting on US President Donald Trump's calls on Europe to replace Russian energy with American supplies, Ryabkov said he saw nothing new in them, stating Russia's energy sector is well-prepared to handle such market competition.

He stressed that the important factor is the US administration's commitment to improving relations, a direction he said was established at the meeting last month in Anchorage, Alaska between the Russian and American presidents.

Committee reveals transcript of former Attorney General William Barr’s deposition as well as letters from former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzalez and Jeff Sessions

The US House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released more documents Tuesday as part of an investigation into the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The committee, chaired by Republican Rep. James Comer, released the transcript of former Attorney General William Barr’s deposition.

During his closed-door testimony with committee members in August, Barr was asked if he recalled informing President Donald Trump that he was in the Justice Department’s files on Epstein.

"I didn't have that kind of conversation with him," he said, according to the transcript.

Multiple reports published indicated that Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump in May that his name appeared multiple times in files related to Epstein. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the May meeting.

Barr told lawmakers that he only remembered two conversations he had with Trump on Epstein.

"One was when I heard about the suicide. I called him up and said, 'You better brace for this,' and I told him words to that effect, and I told him about it and told him we were going to be investigating it very vigorously," he said, according to the transcript.

Epstein also came up in a separate conversation involving several individuals, though Barr said he couldn’t recall when it took place.

"And the President said something to the effect that he had broken off with Epstein long ago and that he had actually pushed him out of Mar-a-Lago," Barr said.

The committee also revealed letters from former Attorneys General Alberto Gonzalez and Jeff Sessions that deny having any knowledge relevant to the committee’s probe of the federal government’s investigation into Epstein and his convicted associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.

Comer sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson summarizing its ongoing probe.

There are bipartisan congressional efforts to force the release of all federal documents related to the Epstein case.

Epstein was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell on Aug. 10, 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges of sex trafficking minors in New York and Florida and had pleaded not guilty.
