Zeynep Sonmez stands one victory away from becoming the first Turkish tennis player to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles event. She faces Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva in the Australian Open third round on Friday.

Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez is poised to make history at the Australian Open in Melbourne. The 23-year-old, currently ranked 112th in the world, will face Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva on Friday in a third-round match that, if won, would send her into the last 16—a first for any Turkish player in a Grand Slam singles event.

The Historic Opportunity

Sonmez, who reached a career-high ranking of 69 last year and won the WTA Merida Open in 2024, has already broken new ground for Türkiye. She became the first Turkish woman in the Open Era to reach the third round of a major at Wimbledon in 2025 and the first to compete in all four Grand Slam main draws in a single season. A win over Putintseva would surpass the third-round benchmark set 75 years ago by Bahtiye Musluoğlu at the 1950 French Open and establish an unprecedented milestone.

Analyzing the Third-Round Challenge

Her opponent, 31-year-old Yulia Putintseva (world No. 94), is an experienced campaigner with three WTA titles and three Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances to her name, though never at the Australian Open. This will be the first career meeting between the two. The match is scheduled for Kia Arena, following the Tien-Borges contest which begins at 12:40 p.m. local time (0140 GMT).

Context of Turkish Tennis History

The history of Turkish players in Grand Slam singles is sparse. In the modern era, no Turkish man has passed the second round, with Marsel İlhan holding that record. In women's doubles, İpek Şenoğlu reached the third round at the 2004 US Open and 2009 Wimbledon. Sonmez's current run therefore represents the most significant individual achievement in decades, generating immense national pride and inspiring a new generation of athletes in Türkiye. Her performance underscores the growing profile of Turkish tennis on the world stage.

Aleksandar Vucic says Serbian tennis star can return with his head held high, Serbian premier denounces 'scandalous' deportation

Serbia’s president lashed out at Australia on Sunday after a federal court ordered the deportation of tennis superstar Novak Djokovic.

Aleksandar Vucic said Australian authorities harassed “the world’s best tennis player for 11 days to eventually give him the decision they made on the first day.”

“They think that this harassment humiliated Djokovic, but they actually humiliated themselves,” he asserted.

Vucic said Djokovic would have reconsidered his decision to compete in the Australian Open or may have taken the vaccine, if Australian authorities had clarified that unvaccinated people cannot enter the country.

His comments came hours after a three-judge federal court bench unanimously rejected Djokovic’s appeal against the cancellation of his visa.

Djokovic, the top men’s tennis player, had been given a medical exemption by Australian authorities to travel to the country to defend his Australian Open title and chase a record 21st Grand Slam win.

However, he was detained by immigration authorities when he arrived in Melbourne on Jan. 6.

He filed an appeal against the move and a court ordered his release on Jan. 10, but the Serbian athlete was detained again on Saturday, after Australia’s Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used discretionary powers to cancel his visa.

Vucic accused Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison of “playing politics” ahead of the country’s upcoming federal election.

He also slammed Australian prosecutors for “lying” in Djokovic’s court hearings, particularly about Serbia’s COVID-19 vaccination numbers.

“You have seen in the most meaningless court process how much the prosecutor is lying. They simply lied. They say that less than 50% of Serbia’s citizens are vaccinated, when the official figure is 58%, which is more than many European Union countries,” he said.

Vucic added that Djokovic “can return to his country with his head held high.”

Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic echoed the president’s sentiments as she denounced Australia’s “scandalous” decision to deport Djokovic.

“I find it unbelievable that we have two completely contradictory court decisions within the span of just a few days,” Brnabic said, adding that Djokovic “had endured both physical and psychological harm” during the saga.

“I am disappointed ... I think it demonstrated how the rule of law is functioning, or better to say not functioning, in some other countries. In any case, I can hardly wait to see Novak Djokovic in our own country, in Serbia.”

The UN on Friday underlined the need for proof on the whereabouts of a missing Chinese tennis star who has been missing since recently alleging that she suffered sexual assault from a powerful ex-official.

"It would be important to have proof of her whereabouts and well-being," spokeswoman Liz Throssell of the UN Human Rights Office said on the missing athlete Peng Shuai at a briefing in Geneva.

"We are calling for an investigation with full transparency into her allegation of sexual assault," added Throssell.

Chinese state broadcaster CGTN published an e-mail on Wednesday purported to have been penned by Peng, saying she was "fine" and "resting at home." The letter also said that the previous allegation of sexual assault was "not true."

However, Steve Simon, President, and CEO of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) responded in a statement saying that the letter "raises my concerns about her whereabouts or whether she has been kept safe."

Peng, who won the 2013 Wimbledon and 2014 French Open titles in doubles, rose to 14th place in the singles classification and reached the semi-finals of the 2014 US Open.

Her social media post on Nov. 2 accusing former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault three years ago was quickly deleted and the Chinese tennis star, who has won more than 20 doubles and two singles events, has since disappeared from public view.

Zhang, 75, served as one of the seven members of the most powerful body of the Chinese Communist Party. He retired in 2018.

Fellow Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka spoke out on Twitter on Tuesday: "Censorship is never OK at any cost; I hope Peng Shuai and her family are safe and OK. I'm in shock of the current situation, and I'm sending love and light her way."

Top men's player Novak Djokovic also expressed "shock" over Peng's absence from public view.

WHO says Afghanistan hit hardest by pandemic, adding layer of complexity to already fragile health system

Afghanistan received 500 oxygen generators from the World Health Organization (WHO) Monday to address the critical needs of patients as the war-ravaged country battles a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ministry of Public Health said this much-needed aid would help support the country’s fragile health system in combating the surging number of cases in public sector hospitals.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Health Minister Wazhma Salimi thanked the WHO and vowed to fairly distribute the devices in some of the vulnerable provinces grappling with COVID-19 infections and deaths.

Meanwhile, Wajmeh Salemi, deputy minister of finance and administration at the Ministry of Public Health, while appreciating the assistance and cooperation of the WHO with Afghanistan, promised that these devices would be distributed fairly to the health centers that need them.

According to the WHO, the shipment -- worth US$800,000 -- arrived from the organization’s logistics hub in Dubai and was handed over to the Ministry of Public Health for distribution among COVID-19 hospitals across the country.

“The WHO is sparing no effort to respond to the pandemic on all fronts. One of the most effective and basic ways to treat COVID-19 patients is through providing oxygen. We are working closely with the Ministry of Public Health to put in place a distribution plan that maximizes the use and benefit of the concentrators,” said Dr. Dapeng Luo, WHO representative in Afghanistan.

It noted that the Delta variant of the virus, which is associated with increased transmission of COVID-19, has been detected in Afghanistan and was accompanied by a surge of cases while the escalating conflict continues to overwhelm the health system further with complex trauma cases.

The WHO also noted that as COVID-19 continued to ravage health systems across the globe, Afghanistan has been hit hardest by the pandemic, which added yet another layer of complexity to an already fragile health system.

Schools and other education institutions reopened in Afghanistan on Sunday after months of closure due to surging coronavirus infections and deaths.

Grappling with shortages of vaccines and oxygen, in February, Afghanistan began the rollout of an Indian-made COVID-19 vaccine following the WHO’s emergency use approval.

Afghanistan on Monday recorded 35 more deaths and 594 new infections to take the total death toll from the pandemic to 6,515 and total infections to 145,008.

According to UN estimates, vaccination rates remain extremely low in Afghanistan, with less than 4% of the population vaccinated, and the virus continues to deeply affect the lives of the most vulnerable children and families across the country as they face the compounded impact of the pandemic, conflict and drought.

Naomi Osaka says she suffered long bouts of depression since clinching her first Grand Slam title at 2018 US Open

Japan tennis player Naomi Osaka announced Monday that she has withdrawn from the French Open, citing depression and anxiety.

"Hey everyone, this isn't a situation I ever imagined or intended when I posted a few days ago. I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris," Osaka said on Twitter.

"I never wanted to be a distraction. I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer. More importantly, I would never trivialize mental health or use the term lightly," she added

Osaka also revealed that she had suffered bouts of depression since clinching her first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2018, adding she has had a really hard time coping with that.

"Anyone that knows me knows that I'm introverted, and anyone that's seen me at tournaments will notice that I'm often wearing headphones as that helps dull my social anxiety."

The 23-year-old went to on say that she gets “huge waves of anxiety” before speaking to the media.

"Though the tennis press has always been kind to me (and I wanna apologize especially to all the cool journalists who I may have hurt), I am not a natural public speaker and get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world's media. I get really nervous and find it stressful to always try to engage and give you the best answers I can," she added.

The Japanese star has two Australian Opens (2019 and 2021) and two US Open titles (2018 and 2020) to her name.

Novak Djokovic, the men's world number one tennis player, has tested positive for COVID-19, the Serbian said in a statement on Tuesday.

Croatia's Borna Coric, Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria and Viktor Troicki have previously tested positive after playing in Djokovic's Adria Tour exhibition tournament in the Balkan region.

"The moment we arrived in Belgrade we went to be tested," the 33-year-old said in a statement, adding that he was not showing any symptoms. "My result is positive, just as Jelena's (wife), while the results of our children are negative.

"I am extremely sorry for each individual case of infection. I hope that it will not complicate anyone's health situation and that everyone will be fine. I will remain in self-isolation for the next 14 days, and repeat the test in five days."

The tournament witnessed packed stands during the opening leg in Belgrade, players hugging at the net, playing basketball, posing for pictures and attending press conferences together.

Djokovic organised nights out in Belgrade for the players and pictures and videos of him dancing with the other participants at his event were posted on social media.

With both Serbia and Croatia easing lockdown measures weeks before the event, players were not obliged to observe social distancing rules in either country.

Djokovic said the idea behind his tournament was noble and he wanted to raise funds for players in need.

"Everything we did in the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions," said Djokovic, who is also the head of the players council of the men's ATP Tour. "Our tournament meant to unite and share a message of solidarity and compassion throughout the region.

"The Tour has been designed to help both established and up and coming tennis players from South-Eastern Europe to gain access to some competitive tennis while the various tours are on hold due to the COVID-19 situation."

A following statement confirmed that the remainder of the Adria Tour had been cancelled, the two-day event on July 3 and 4 in Banja Luka, Bosnia and the planned exhibition match with Bosnian Damir Dzumhur in Sarajevo on July 5.

"We are extremely disappointed to have to cancel the events in Banja Luka and Sarajevo," said Novak's brother Djordje Djokovic, the director of the Adria Tour.

"We were looking forward to treating fans in these two cities to watching Novak Djokovic and other top players. Unfortunately, the recent events make everyone’s speedy recovery a top priority."

Death of George Floyd prompted celebrated sports figure Yannick Noah to critique athletes who remain silent

One of France's biggest names in tennis has spoken out about the lack of his white colleagues making their voices heard on the issue of racism.

Interviewed on Sunday on France 2 television, Yannick Noah commented on the death of George Floyd in the US, an unarmed black man who died after being detained by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota, one of whom knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes leading to Floyd's asphyxiation and subsequent death.

The tennis star said he was troubled by the lack of other prominent white tennis athletes coming forth to speak out as well.

"Their silence bothers me but it goes further than that. It's an injustice which should make everyone aware. I am certain that in general police do a very good job but there are bad apples," Noah expressed over police brutality, the issue that sparked protests in numerous American cities and around the world.

Noah, 60, is the child of a Cameroonian father and a French mother. He is a former Grand Slam winner, having clinched the country's biggest match at Roland Garos, the French Open, in 1983.

"It's good that the young people take care of it, but what bothers me is that they are all half-breeds or blacks," he said.

Although the younger generation realizes that this is their future, a world with racism is a world they do not want to live in, added Noah.

Fearless Russian qualifier Andrey Rublev needed just over an hour to beat Roger Federer 6-3 6-4 in the third round of the Cincinnati Masters on Thursday, the Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion suffering his quickest defeat for 16 years.

The 21-year-old Rublev, who broke the third seed in his first two service games, shed tears of joy after pulling off the biggest win of his career in 62 minutes.

"It is such an amazing feeling when you're playing a legend like Roger and all these people supporting him until the end,” he told ESPN.

“One day I hope I'm going to feel the same.

“Today I was just trying to do my best and was thinking in my head that I need to play every point until the end no matter what.”

It was Federer's fastest defeat since losing to Franco Squillari in 54 minutes in Sydney in 2003.

“He was super clean,” Federer, seven-times champion in Cincinnati, said of Rublev.

“Defence, offence, serving well. Didn't give me anything. He was everywhere. So it was tough for me, but excellent match by him. I was impressed.”

Rublev’s win sets up an all-Russian quarter-final with ninth seed Daniil Medvedev, who beat German Jan-Lennard Struff 6-2 6-1.

World number one Novak Djokovic beat Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3 6-4, saving four break points in the second set and earning his own break in the third game.

“I'm very pleased with the performance today because I played against a very great, quality player tonight,” Djokovic said. “It’s a straight-sets win but probably the score doesn't indicate how tough it was on the court.”

Next up for Djokovic is Frenchman Lucas Pouille, who beat eighth seed Karen Khachanov of Russia 6-7(3) 6-4 6-2.

In other matches, Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut took down Miomir Kecmanovic 6-1 6-2 and will next face France’s Richard Gasquet, who beat Diego Schwartzman 7-6(6) 6-3.

Belgium’s David Goffin and Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka also advanced to set up a quarter-final match-up.

The All India Tennis Association will discuss its concerns over next month's Davis Cup tie between India and Pakistan with security advisers from the International Tennis Federation (ITF) on Monday, AITA General Secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee has said.

Security representatives of the governing bodies will speak in a telephone call that will also be attended by India's Davis Cup captain Mahesh Bhupathi, after which AITA will decide whether the Indian team travels to Islamabad, Chatterjee added.

The Indian side wants safety guarantees before travelling for the Sept. 14-15 tie, with tensions high between the neighbours after New Delhi removed "special status" from its portion of the contested region of Kashmir.

AITA wrote to the ITF on Wednesday to ask if the tie could be moved to a neutral venue or postponed after Pakistan last week expelled India's ambassador and suspended bilateral trade and public transport links with its neighbour.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir since 1947 and came close to a third in February after an attack on Indian police by a Pakistan-based militant group resulted in air strikes by both countries.

Chatterjee told Reuters on Thursday that the ITF had shared security arrangements for the Indian team in Islamabad but had "not said anything" about India's request to shift the tie out of Pakistan or postpone it.

"We have been given time on Aug. 19 for a telephonic conversation between the security advisors of the ITF and AITA," he added. "We will take a decision after Monday's call.

"We will try and explain to them the prevailing sentiment and tension among the people of the two countries. The security will be entirely provided by the Pakistan government which has already downgraded diplomatic relations with India.

"The ITF needs to understand that there could be a possibility of the security cover being withdrawn by the government due to public sentiment. In that scenario we will be just sitting ducks there. How can we take such risks?"

India's sports minister Kiren Rijiju has said the government will not prevent the Indian team from playing the Davis Cup tie in Pakistan because it is not a bilateral series and is organised by a world governing body.

It's not for us to take a call.

"If needed, we'll ask ITF to see if they, keeping players' safety I mind, can shift the tie to a neutral venue where both teams feel safe and comfortable."

Chatterjee dismissed reports that any Indian player has security apprehensions about playing in Islamabad.

"Nothing of that sort, they are fine.

An Indian team will travel to Pakistan for a Davis Cup tie in September, the All India Tennis Association (AITA) has said, despite strained relations between the nations.

The nuclear-armed neighbours have gone to war three times since independence in the mid-20th century and another conflict nearly erupted earlier this year, giving an even spicier-than-usual geopolitical backdrop to sporting rivalries.

India's cricket team has not toured Pakistan since 2007 and bilateral cricketing ties between them have remained suspended since 2008.

Relations further soured in February this year after a suicide car bombing killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary police in Indian-controlled Kashmir putting question marks on the Asia/Oceania Group 1 tie, which will be held on Sept. 14-15 in Islamabad.

"It's not a bilateral series, it's the World Cup of tennis. So no government clearance was required," AITA Secretary General Hironmoy Chatterjee told Reuters.

"We needed an invitation from the Pakistan Tennis Federation for the visa process which we have received. We are applying for the visas soon as it's a lengthy process."

An Indian tennis team last toured Pakistan in 1964 for Davis Cup when they defeated the hosts 4-0 while Pakistan lost 3-2 in their last visit in 2006 in Mumbai.

Until a few years back Pakistan was forced to host its home Davis Cup ties at neutral venues as teams refused to travel due to security concerns.

Chatterjee said the International Tennis Federation has put in place stringent security requirements to host Davis Cup ties and India's players are looking forward to winning the tie and progress to the World Group qualifier.

"The security arrangements are ensured by the ITF.
