Belgium and Algeria proceed to the next round of the World Cup while Russia and South career bow out

Algeria qualify to the last 16 alongside Belgium

Algeria drew against Russia 1-1 in 2014 FIFA World Cup H match conducted by Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir Thursday to proceed to the final 16 in the tournament.

Russia took the lead early at the Arena da Baixada, Curitiba with Alexander Kokorin's header in 6th minute. Having taken the lead they then tried to hit Algeria on the break.

Nicknamed as Les Fennecs (The Fennec Foxes), Algeria equalised through 26-year-old Islam Slimani's header in 60th minute. In the final stages of the game Russia took more risks but Algeria held on to a point to clear the group stage for the first time in their history.

In the other game Group H game, leaders Belgium defeated South Korea 1-0 with a controversial goal from defender Jan Vertonghen in the 77th minute. The Europeans were down to ten men by that stage, having had Steven Defour sent off at the Arena de Sao Paulo just before half-time.

After these results Group H leaders Belgium will meet Group G runners-up USA meanwhile Group H runners-up Algeria will compete against Group G leaders Germany in the second round.
