After Patrick Ekeng's tragic death in a soccer stadium, Brazilian Bernardo Ribeiro died in hospital at the end of the Carioca Championship match.

Ribeiro, who played at Australia's Newcastle Jets and also enjoyed stints in Albania, Italy and Finland, was playing in an amateur match on Sunday in Minas Gerais state, his native country, when he collapsed.

The 26-year-old, who represented Friburgense in this year's Rio State Championship, was rushed to hospital but medics failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He reportedly suffered a heart attack, though his cause of death has yet to be confirmed.

"The Nova Friburgo sport is in mourning," Ribeiro's club said in a statement.

“The Friburguense Atlético Clube says goodbye to a great athlete and human being, loved by all the players, coaching staff, management and employees of the club.

Ribeiro becomes the second player in two days to die after falling ill during a match.

On Friday, Dynamo Bucharest's Patrick Eking died in hospital after collapsing on the pitch during a Romanian league match against Vitoria Constanta.
