Turkey's domestically produced guidance kit, the HGK-83, is set to go into mass production, the country's top defense industry official announced on Wednesday.
"We are increasing the variety of ammunition in accordance with the needs of the Turkish Air Force," Defense Industries Directorate İsmail Demir said on Twitter, attaching footage of the kit to the post.
The HGK-83 is a GPS/INS guidance kit that turns existing U.S.-made Mk-83 general purpose bombs and 1.000-pound munition into smart weapons. Its capability of release rises with the use of BRU 57 ejector rack.
Developed by the Defense Industry Research and Development Institute (SAGE) of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), the 500-kg ammunition has a range of 28 kilometers.
The country aims to continue to work on domestic, high value-added production and to raise the share of its medium- and high-technology exports in the year 2020.
