Baby gorilla born after rare caesarean operation

A baby gorilla has been born at a zoo in Bristol after a very rare and 'extraordinary' emergency caesarean following the symptoms of potentially fatal pre-eclampsia were seen in the mother gorilla. It is the first time a gorilla has been born by caesarean at Bristol Zoo and one of very few instances worldwide. The operation was performed by a human gynecologist after the mother, Kera, was diagnosed with life-threatening pre-eclampsia. Kera is recovering and being monitored closely by the veterinary team.
