Pope Francis washes, kisses feet of refugees

During the traditional Easter Week foot-washing ceremony, Pope Francis washed and kissed the feet of Muslim, Orthodox, Hindu and Catholic refugees at a shelter for asylum-seekers in Castelnuovo di Porto, outside Rome. The ceremony took place as part of the observances of Maundy Thursday, the Holy Thursday before Easter. Foot-washing is performed as a gesture of humility in Christian and other religious traditions. Four women and eight men took part in the ceremony. The women included an Italian Catholic who works at the center and three Eritrean Coptic Christian migrants.
