A song and an animated video clip inspired by the drowning of a 3-year old Syrian refugee, Aylan Kurdi, has been released by an Australian musician who “felt overwhelmed by a profound protective instinct for him and people like him.” The song, titled 'Oh Canada,' is based on the intentions of the Kurdi family of escaping the violence in Syria and making a home in Canada. “From where I sat in my comfortable living room nursing my newborn son, the tiny child in that wrenching image could have been my own little boy," said Missy Higgins, the writer of the song. Aylan Kurdi, a 3-year old Syrian refugee, drowned in the Mediterranean Sea on September 2 of 2015. The photographs of his body washed up on the beach gave a name and face to the plight of Syrian refugees and prompted an international outcry about the growing crisis in Europe. The boy and his family boarded a small inflatable boat which capsized about five minutes after leaving a beach at Bodrum in Turkey. Sixteen people were in the boat, which was taking them to the Greek island of Kos. His mother and brother also died in the accident. Refugees most commonly attempt to enter Europe through Greece, crossing the Mediterranean from Turkey on small, often flimsy rafts and other vessels.
