A Chinese woman died of coronavirus in Nepal on Wednesday, the first foreigner to have died of the disease in the Himalayan country, an official said.
With the latest fatality, virus-linked death toll reached 42, along with 18,094 infections as the South Asian state resumed normal life after a 4-month nationwide lockdown.
Jageshwar Gautam, a spokesman of the Ministry of Health, said the 49-year-old died of COVID-19 in a government-run hospital in the capital Kathmandu.
"She was airlifted from a hospital in Pokhara, [a tourist town in west of Kathmandu] on July 17," he told a press conference.
Nepal ended virus restrictions Tuesday midnight. Authorities have also decided to resume domestic and international flights from Aug. 17. The country's international borders will also reopen the same day.
Schools and cinemas, however, remain closed and large-scale gatherings are banned.
Tourism is one of the main sources of income in Nepal, the country with Mt Everest, the highest mountain peak in the world. It is also the birthplace of Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.
The shutdown was implemented just before the peak of the tourism season, when hundreds of mountaineers and trekkers visit the landlocked country between India and China.
