German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel’s letter dated Jul. 24 to EU authorities regarding Turkey has been leaked to the press.

According to German magazine Der Spiegel, in Gabriel’s letter to Johannes Hahn, the
European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations
, he made accusations against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and called for more intense measures to be taken against Ankara.
EU should cut Turkey’s financial support

The foreign minister in the letter claimed that “mediating efforts were leading to nothing with Ankara’s increasingly aggressive and fruitless politics” and suggested that “before Turkey’s accession [to the EU], aid should be limited to Turkey’s civil society, and not to the government, within the frame of democracy and rule of law.”

Gabriel also expressed his opinion by stating that the “European Investment Bank should limit its encouragement of project proposals.”

EU responded negatively to the letter stating that they were in favor of continuing relations with Turkey.
