A civil society group gathered in front of the US Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, on Friday to condemn Israel's occupation of Palestine and urge Washington to cut off its support.

"The international community has begun to urge for the end of illegal Israeli settlements on Palestinian land," the protest coordinator Ahmad, who goes by only one name, told Anadolu Agency.

The gathering also called on the Indonesian government to show its consistent support for Palestinian independence and urged curbs on trade with Israel.

They asked the government to support efforts to investigate possible Israeli war crimes and human rights abuses against Palestinians.

"Indonesia seems to be half-hearted in supporting Palestinian independence," said Ahmad.

On Thursday, Turkey, and Europe both denounced Israel's occupation of Palestine.

Turkey's ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party spokesman Omer Celik said on Twitter that he "strongly condemns" the way Israel is hastening the occupation of Palestine during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

He also voiced support for Palestinians facing violence.

The Palestinian territories, including the West Bank and East Jerusalem, have been under illegal Israeli occupation since 1967.

Like Turkey, and much of the international community, the EU does not recognize Israel’s sovereignty over those areas.
