Hagia Sophia’s cutest resident, Gli the cat, had been getting an increased amount of attention from local and foreign fans alike ever since Istanbul’s most controversial landmark was reverted back into a mosque in July.

Gli, which is almost as famous as Karl Lagerfeld’s Choupette- one of the richest felines in the world- even has her own Instagram account, boasting over 100,000 followers.

Unfortunately, we have some bad news for fans of this famed furball; the health condition of Gli, which has been living in Hagia Sophia for 16 years now, is deteriorating.

It was announced via Gli’s Instagram account (hagiasophiacat) that the cat would now be housed in a private room of the mosque due to old-age (81 in human years) and excessive attention.

“I was sick 🤕 and has been a week since i was at veterinary under treatment. Finally today I’m back home. From now on i have a private room because my heart can’t handle stress and crowd anymore,” a post on Instagram read.

“The most beautiful thing that real friends can do for me is to send me prayers and good vibes 💖

As i am in my private room don’t forget to share your love with my other pawed friends and my housemates.”

Born at Hagia Sophia in 2004, Gli had 2 siblings, Pati and Kızım.
