With the last phase of voting for general elections in India is due on Sunday, Indian prime minister on Friday said his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will return to power.
“A government with full majority will come back after remaining in power for five years. This is probably happening after a very long time. This is a big deal in itself,” local news agency Press Trust of India quoted Narendra Modi as saying during a news conference in the capital New Delhi.
The Indian prime minister held a news conference for the first time in five years of his party’s rule, but declined to take questions from journalists.
“The public has decided on the next government. We have promised many things in our manifesto to take the country forward. As soon as possible, the new government will take charge and we will take decisions one after another," Modi said.
With the world’s largest electorate -- nearly 900 million -- the elections in India is being held in seven phases through May 19, the counting will be held on May 23, and the results are expected to be announced the same day.
The ruling right-wing Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is the biggest contender in the elections, with current Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking a second term.
