Iraqi security forces killed two Daesh terrorists late Monday in the Hawija district of Kirkuk province.
Muntazar es-Saadi, media spokesman for the Second Division of the Counterterrorism Police, told Anadolu Agency that security forces began searching near An-Najatiyah village in the Elbu-Hamdan area after receiving intelligence that many Daesh sleeper cells were there.
Saadi said the terrorists opened fire on the security forces and two terrorists were killed.
He added that many sleeper cells are still believed to be present in rural areas of Hawija.
Last December, officials in Baghdad declared that Daesh’s military presence in Iraq had been all but dismantled. But it appears the group still maintains sleeper cells in several parts of the country, including Kirkuk.
