Turkmen Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on Monday discussed progress on major projects between the two countries during a meeting in Astana, Kazakhstan's capital.

“During the conversation, the progress of implementation of major projects in the trade, economic, energy and transport and logistics spheres was reviewed,” said a statement issued by the Kazakh presidency following their meeting.

Both leaders stressed the importance of completing ongoing projects as soon as possible, which they described as helping to strengthen the two countries' special relations.

During the meeting, special emphasis was placed on strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, the statement said, adding that they discussed current regional and international issues and reviewed the schedule of upcoming high-level contacts.

Tokayev considers Turkmenistan a "reliable strategic partner" and a state close to them "both in spirit and history," it added.

“Indeed, in recent years, cooperation between our countries has developed along an ascending line and acquired new dynamics, including in strategic sectors of the economy,” he added.

He went on to convey his best wishes to his Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedow and chairman of the People's Council of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow.

For his part, Meredov expressed gratitude for his warm welcome and confirmed Ashgabat's commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation with Astana.

Meredov also held talks with his Kazakh counterpart Murat Nurtleu.
