Landslides in northeastern India killed nine people on Wednesday morning, officials said.

The fatalities in Manipur state, near the border with Myanmar, include eight children, said Shheikh Aasif Shah, sub-deputy collector of Tamenglong district, where the incident occurred.

“The rescue operations are going on in full swing with collaboration of the district administration, police and local authorities," he added.

The landslides occurred after torrential rains hit the state in the last few days.

Chief Minister Biren Singh said: “I’m deeply saddened to know that nine precious lives were lost due to landslides at three places in Tamenglong headquarters."
