Magnitude-6.6 earthquake jolts southwestern Japan

At least 9 injured but tsunami warning not issued

A magnitude-6.6 earthquake jolted the Kyushu islands in the Hyuga Nada Sea in southwestern Japan early Saturday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency registered the quake around 01.08 a.m. local time.

It occurred at a depth of 45 kilometers (28 miles).

The tremor was felt in Oita, Miyazaki, Kochi and Kumamoto provinces and injured five people in Oita and four in Miyazaki.

There was no tsunami warning for the earthquake, whose magnitude was first announced as 6.4 and later updated to 6.6.

There have been power and water outages in some cities.

It was reported that no abnormalities were detected at nuclear power plants operated by Kyushu Electric Power in the region.
