As U.S. President Donald Trump wages an economic war against Turkey, Morocco has stepped up its support and started a campaign to “Support the Turkish lira and boycott U.S. products.”
Starting a campaign on social media with the hashtag #SupportTheLira, Moroccans called for the purchases of Turkish products and to travel to the culture-rich country.
“Boycott the U.S. Boycott American products. It is a duty to support Turkey. Turkey is superior to everyone,” wrote Moroccan journalist Halid Abjeg in a post on Facebook.
Turkey and the U.S. are currently experiencing rocky relations following Washington’s imposition of sanctions on Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu and Justice Minister Abdülhamit Gül for not releasing American Pastor Andrew Brunson, who faces terrorism charges in Turkey.
U.S. President Donald Trump ramped up his attack on Turkey by doubling U.S. tariffs on Turkish aluminum and steel imports to 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
Turkey increased tariffs on several U.S.-origin products, including alcohol and tobacco products and cars in retaliation.
Researcher Idris Bıvanu, who is carrying out studies on Turkey, stated that the campaign reflects the Moroccan people’s political awareness and said: “Turkey is a model for nations that want to be rid from hegemony and free. The limitless empathy for Turkey against U.S. hegemony clearly displays this situation.”
Bıvanu also stated that the campaigns supporting Turkey across the world, from Pakistan to Morocco, displayed the publics’ desire to make democratic and political choices.
Moroccan cleric Hammad el-Kabbac, in a Facebook post, invited Moroccans and the entire Arab world to support Turkey and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Kabbac raised his voice and said that it is possible to be free of the global imperialist system by supporting Turkey and Erdoğan, who stands up for the oppressed around the world.
Kabbac stated that Erdoğan proved with receiving a strong support that it was possible to get rid of the global imperialist system by backing oppressed people around the world.
“All these recent developments show that it is right time to put forth a hard and diligent effort to establish an Islamic unity which will contribute to the Muslim world’s return to its once proud, self-determined and prosperous days,” he added.
Kabbac also mentioned some initiatives taken in the Muslim world such as Qatar’s $15 billion investment in Turkey. He said that such moves that supported turkey against the U.S. reflected Muslim nations’ desire for freedom and a dignified life.
Adil Reffouch, a cleric, also posted on Facebook and raised his voice to call on people to support Turkey by saying, “Stand by fair leaders.”
“I personally call on my Muslim brothers and people around the world who endorse freedom to stand by Turkey, which did not bow down to U.S. arrogance that is led by Donald Trump and his Zionist collaborators.”
