Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has said that a new era is beginning in the United States as Republican Donald Trump becomes U.S. President.

“I hope the people's choice brings benefit for basic rights and freedoms in the world,” said Erdoğan, in his speech at Turkey's Independent Industrialists and Businessmen Association (MÜSİAD) EXPO and 20th International Business Forum Congress in Istanbul.

Erdoğan urged the European Union (EU) to make its final decision on Turkey's membership application quickly, as the bloc criticizes Turkey for its recent fight against terrorism.

"They say the negotiations should be reviewed. It's too late now. Review it as soon as possible and make your final decision" Erdoğan said.

Turkey applied to join the union in 1987 and negotiations began in 2005. As part of a deal agreed last year to stem the tide of refugees to Europe, Turkey was promised a relaxation of travel restrictions for its nationals and an acceleration of its membership application.

However, since the July 15 coup attempt, relations between Ankara and Brussels have fallen to a low, as Turkish politicians lament the EU's muted response to the attempted takeover and EU leaders criticize Turkey over widespread arrests and job suspensions in its wake.

'Europe can't interrupt Turkey's fight'

The Turkish President recalled the criticism against Europe, saying that Europe is abetting terrorism by providing guns and logistics.

“We are aware of everything. We see how the PKK is able to act so freely and comfortably in Europe, because of the European leaders' welcoming attitude. And these leaders try to interrupt the counterterrorism fight of Turkey. However, they can't stop us, as we will continue fighting against terrorism,” Erdoğan said.

The Turkish President also recalled his concerns about the actual situation that all five members of the UN Security Council are Christian countries, only representing three continents, Europe, America and Asia. "That's why I often say that the world is greater than five," said Erdoğan, adding that the system should be changed radically and represent all the countries.

'Turkey won't let investors down'

President Erdoğan also indicated the positive atmosphere in Turkey in terms of investments and stability, despite the attacks of terrorist organizations such as Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Daesh and the coup bid of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) on July 15.

“None of the terror attacks or the coup bid reflect Turkey's current reality. Turkey will not let the investors, who believe in Turkey, down,” he said.
