Since 2008, officials of Bangladesh’s Dhaka have stopped reserving permanent graves for the deceased, and even a semi-permanent grave nowadays costs around $20,000 in the country where the per capita annual income is only $1,610.

There are only eight public graveyards, plus a few small privately owned ones in Bangladesh's capital with 16 million residents, which has more than 44,000 people in each square kilometer, according to the UN.

Although temporary graves are cheap to allocate, another body will be buried in each plot every two years in line with the city rules. Therefore, temporary graves are filled with multiple bodies in Dhaka nowadays. Having no other option, people end up burying their loved ones in the same grave.
