Former Premier Nawaz Sharif was shifted to a hospital from the Adiala jail on Sunday after he complained of pain in his chest and arm, according to local media reports.

Earlier in the morning a team of doctors conducted a check-up of the former premier at the prison, where Sharif is serving jail time after conviction in a corruption case. The doctors advised authorities to immediately shift him to a hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU).

“Former premier is already a cardiac patient and his health condition has deteriorated in the prison,” Dr. Adnan Khan, Sharif’s personal physician, told Anadolu Agency.

I had requested authorities to shift him to a hospital since he needs proper care, Khan added.

Last week, a team of doctors who conducted Sharif’s check-up at Adiala prison had said in their report that Sharif’s heartbeat had been irregular due to dehydration and presence of urea in the blood which could cause acute renal failure.

On July 6, a Pakistani court handed a 10-year jail term to Sharif and imposed an 8-million-pound ($10.58-million) fine in a graft case linked to the purchase of four luxury apartments in London in 1993.

His daughter Maryam Nawaz and her husband Safdar Awan were sentenced to seven year and one year in jail, respectively.

The authorities arrested Sharif and his daughter at Lahore airport after their return from London and sent them to Adiala jail on July 13.
