The number of documented attacks targeting mosques in Germany has reached a record high in 2016, according to official figures provided by the German government.
A record 91 mosque attacks have taken place over the course of 2016, according to the figures provided by the government in response to a motion filed by Green Party Parliament Member Monika Lazar.
It was revealed that the total number of mosque attacks increased 20% from 2015, with the highest number of attacks attacks, 21, taking place in Germany's most populous North Rhine-Westaphalia state, followed by 15 in Lower Saxony, and 9 in both Saxony and Baden-Württemberg.
The perpetrators of attacks targeting mosques remained unknown in all but 2 cases where the attackers were identified and convicted.
Speaking to the Bild journal, Parliamentarian Monika Lazar stated that the increased number of mosque attacks in the country is evidence of a rise in Islamophobia in Germany.
