The Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea will come to an end following Russia’s war against Ukraine, the billionaire said Wednesday.

Abramovich said he will sell Chelsea for the English club's "best interest at heart" amid media speculation about his ownership.

The Russian billionaire said the decision is in the best interest of the London team along with "the fans, the employees, as well as the Club’s sponsors and partners."

The 55-year-old also said all net proceeds from the sale will be donated to help victims of the war in Ukraine.

He added that the Premier League side and its fans will be always in his "heart" and he hopes to visit the club's home at Stamford Bridge one last time to bid farewell.

Abramovich purchased Chelsea for a reportedly £140 million ($187 million) in 2003.

Under his ownership, Chelsea became one of the top European clubs, winning several major titles including two UEFA Champions League, two UEFA Europa League and five Premier League trophies.
