A photo taken at a dinner with the attendance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe during the latter’s visit to Israel caused an uproar on social media over what appeared to be plates with four shoes on them that were served during the diplomatic dinner.

What business could a shoe have on the table?

One detail from Netanyahu’s dinner with Abe however stood out as the two leaders sat down at the table for what appeared to be a plate of dark shoes.

A photo showing the invitees posing at the table along with the chef showed four shoe-shaped cakes, which turned out to be made out of a special type of chocolate.

Israel faces intense criticism

Social media users were outraged upon the publishing of Netanyahu and Abe’s dinner photos, with most users pointing out how inappropriate it was to serve shoe-shaped cakes to the head of a state whose culture and traditions prizes cleanliness and places great emphasis on the practice of taking one’s shoes off before entering the house.

Following his dinner with Netanyahu, Abe reiterated Japan’s support for the Iran nuclear deal.

Abe’s visit to Israel was his first stop of a regional shuttle diplomacy tour in the Middle East.
