Sudan’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) has rounded up several top military officers suspected of planning to stage a military coup, a Sudanese military source said on Wednesday.

"The detention campaign included arresting two former regime leaders," the source told Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to media.

The source refrained from disclosing details on the detained senior officers.

Meanwhile, the local news websites reported that former Foreign Minister Ali Karti, and Secretary-General of the Islamic Movement Zubair Ahmed Hassan were among the arrested.

Sudan has remained in turmoil since April 11, when the military establishment announced the removal of President Omar al-Bashir after months of popular protests against his 30-year rule.
