As part of the Technical Assistance and Cooperation Project for Strengthening the Organ Donation and Transplant System in Georgia, the fifth round of training activities took place in Istanbul from July 11th to 14th, with the support of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA).

A 13-member delegation from Georgia, comprising 4 surgeons and 9 nephrologists working in the field of organ transplantation, participated in the 4th Kidney Transplant Course organized by TİKA and the International Transplantation Network (ITN).

With the participation of 174 experts from 33 countries, the course provided an international platform for exchanging knowledge and experiences, and the objectives and outcomes of the ongoing project in Georgia were shared during the event.

On the first day of the course, the delegation members visited Istanbul Florence Nightingate Hospital, Medicalpark Göztepe Hospital, and Istinye University Tissue Typing and Immunology Laboratories to meet with specialists. Subsequently, they attended training sessions in two separate halls focusing on advanced surgical practices in kidney transplantation and organ transplant nephrology.

The training sessions included theoretical presentations, case sharing, and live broadcasts of kidney transplant surgeries conducted in 5 hospitals and 8 operating rooms.

The transplant experts provided real-time information to the participants during the procedures and answered their questions, offering valuable insights into the applications.

At the conclusion of the training, a comprehensive project evaluation meeting was held with the Georgian delegation, where the Minutes of Understanding and discussions about the continuation of the project were shared.

Looking ahead, the project activities are planned to continue with the opening of the Tissue Typing and Immunology Laboratories at Tbilisi State Medical University Hospital with TİKA's support in September. This initiative aims to strengthen Georgia's organ donation and transplant system, ultimately benefiting the lives of many in need of vital medical interventions.
