According to a report released by the Central Water Commission (CWC) of India, 511 people have lost their lives and 176 others have been wounded since the beginning of the monsoon season on June 1.
The report underlines the extensive destruction caused by the monsoon floods and landslides, which have damaged around 55,000 houses and 91 districts.
This monsoon season is not only distressing people, but also threatening livestock and crops. At least one million livestock and 81,147 hectares of crops were lost.
The main reasons for the damage has been assessed as high intensity rainfall in a short duration, inadequate drainage capacity of rivers, unplanned reservoir regulation and failure of flood control structures.
The CWC report indicated that this year's monsoon was the worst in the last 64 years in India.
